dhoni
by Sunil Vaidya on Aug 10, 2010 12:26 PM  | Hide replies

A lot has been said about how bad dhoni is as a batsman. And he seems good because of his not outs which gives him a bloated average. When in reality is very very bad/useless.

For those people I have gathered the following statistics of leading one day batsmen.

Career Statistics
Innings notout total runs average strike rate average without not outs/runs scored per innings
M S Dhoni 147 38 5593 51.31 89.48 38.04
Gambhir 96 8 3351 38.07 84.72 34.90
Raina 81 17 2379 37.17 89.73 29.37
Rohit 47 11 1135 31.52 77.89 24.14
Yuvraj 230 32 7345 37.09 88.87 31.93
Kohli 28 4 1082 45.08 80.80 38.64
Dravid 313 40 10765 39.43 71.17 34.39
Sachin 431 41 17598 45.12 86.26 40.83
Sehwag 217 8 7112 34.02 103.13 32.77
Laxman 83 7 2338 30.76 71.23 28.16

Really appreciate the efforts taken to compile these stats...also very analytical....the one where you present the average w/o not outs.. simply superb..

I would like to mention that one way of looking at not outs is that it inflates average. Other way to look at it is that it also means that the concerned player did not get to bat to his full potential. He would have added immensely to his total tally of runs if he could get as many chances to bat till he gets out like many other batsmen.
Dhoni has made more than 5000 odi runs. He also completed these 5000 runs faster than sachin. i.e. dhoni required less no. of innings to get to that mark. Surely that tells us how good dhoni is as a batsman. And that if he is regarded as no.1 odi batsmen by many people it is not with out a very good reason.

But historically, all players with higher number of not outs did have a higher average. Hussey/ dhobi, bevan etc.

Their job is to primarily nudge for singles and doubles and stay till the last delivery, which is why they end up with not outs and an inflated average.

Dhobi being the captain goes 1 step further, Promotes himself to number 3 when the openers have given a good -great start. That way he gets an easy 50 while taking minimal risks.

Dhoni fitness is remarkable.......
by Anurag Rathore on Aug 10, 2010 11:12 AM

Dhoni said players should not hesitate to take a break when they feel that playing continuously may injure them.

"When I get a feeling that if I go and play this series, I may get injured, I try to take some time off, which I did when India came to Sri Lanka last time I didn't play the Test series.

"It's very important to see exactly how your body is feeling. You have to assess which is the better option and more often than not, taking rest is a better option than getting injured," he said.

Batsman friendly pitch

So what If we are playing without our senior players. In these batting friendly pitches our batsman can score heavily. If we are touring to england or australia and playing without srt and gambhir, then this young batsman have chance to prove themselves.

Seniors won't miss touring such developped countries. Did you ever see Sachin Tendulkar opting out from England or Australian tour? Such tours would be good for them to take family along with & enjoy. Juniors are to be happy with left over tours such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe etc.

Politics??
by satish chandar on Aug 10, 2010 10:28 AM  | Hide replies

I agree Dhoni like all other captains have backed some players like Jadeja when they performed badly in key series...

But he is not such a rude captain as some say here.. He has given numerous chances to players like Pathan brothers, Sreesanth, Ishant, Kohli, Rohit and many others.. I dont think any player dropped after single match or series.. Players like Vinay, Dinda, Umesh are also getting a look in in some matches..

It is upto the players to grab the oppurtunities thrown on them.. PK was able to maintain consistency to some extent.. Raina was really the pick.. Once he started to hit 6's in IPL, he moved as bighitter in the team and now, looks good in tests too!! Gambhir is slowly promoting himself into senior batsman in the team.. Even Jadeja too is bowling reasonably well in ODI's.. It is upto the player to grab the oppurtunity and unfair to blame the selector or captain on this..

The captaincy is just judged on results alone..

U are absolutely right. Carry on the good work. Some Indian dogs keep barking at everyone right from Gavaskar to Tendulkar, from Sehwag to Dravid, etc.
But you team are doing a gr8 job. All the best.
