Periyar generally had high praises for Tamil language, and he worked hard to have Tamil and other regional languages be held supreme at state level. But on occasions he DID say Tamil as barbarian language, that is because Tamil does not have respective feminine verbal forms. But that is only in that context. He has repeated in many occasions he was born a Tamil, and he loved Tamil as all Tamils should. He is a man who brought in much needed changes to Tamil alphabets.

Periyar fought for and criticized entire dravidan community. He firmly believed that a dravidans need a separate country for themselves as the aryan led Govt will do no good for the dravidans which in most cases in TN, Kerala & Andhra has been proved right. He firmly opposed the Hindi chavinism against dravidians. He fought in Vaikkam movt and other movts against namboodaris in Kerala. He fought for dravidians and for the welfare of dravidans. He at a later stage was also depressed that separatist feelings happened among dravidans which was well utilised by the govt for to weaken the growing demand for separate country in the name of separate states on linguistic basis. He believed dravidans needed a country to preserve their excellence. He spoke against tamil when it was given higher importance than dravidanism. His words are true today with Keralites flying across the world and country for their livelihood, ethical section of Andrites deprived of development, Tamil fisherman getting killed till now in 1000's in numbers within 18 kms of rameshwaram coast by srilankan navy (things will not be much different, had the fisherman are from kerala or AP. All developments in dravidan land are by dravidans themselves and our money is shedded in aam aadmi schemes for North Indian beggers. Periyar believed that dravidan Language (tamil or Telugu etc) should not be given bigger importance than dravidanism as it will affect the unity of dravidans as it as exactly happened.
