I want batting record of Sachin, Ponting, Hayden, Gilchrist, Jayasuriya, Haq, Richards & Smith while chasing 265 in second innings against teams (except Zimbabwe, Bangladesh & wi) I guess that would decide whoz the greatest ODI player

comment passer have some common sense... why give a man of the match award for a losing cause???
Smith is the best captain and player in the world today. He is dedicated, hard worker and disciplined. Today's captains including Dhoni should learn from him..
these pitches are just like the our subcontinent pitches the team batting 2nd suffers had it been the s.africa which had batted first then Eng most probably would have not reached the 300 mark also see the trend in this tournament , even Nzl is beating SL by batting first
Its towards end of the 44th over of South African innings that Graeme Smith who is clearly suffering from cramps and attended to by Physio, is denied a runner by Strauss the England Captain - Shame on you Strauss - BAD SPORTSMANSHIP - He should be reported to the ICC for bringing the game into direpute and acting against the spirit of the game and handed a long Ban from all types of cricket - Surely many will agree!!

I think the decision on the runner should be left to the umpires rather than the opposition captain.

Exactly...tat was just a cheap shot. SA collapsed after that. All I can say is I hope SA giving them a royal hiding when England come to SA in a few weeks. As for this tournament, I want Australia to win it.

Cricket is a game, as much about running as about hitting the ball. Sachin has in a career spanning 20 years has taken the runner just twice. He was run out once and managed a century the next. If all tired batsmen start making use of runners, who will save the bowlers? If a bowler goes out of the ground for a period, he has to field than many overs before he can bowl again. Sportsmanship is all fine, but in today's Cricket... Winning is more important. I am happy England have realized that. Australia and South Africa have been famously Unsportsmanlike, but people call that aggression and admire them. When England or India do that, they are called Unsporting.
Smith is not all that old. India have been at the receiving end of batsmen taking help of runners to hammer them. Saeed Anwar's 194 epic was mainly due to the runner he deployed when on 88.
ICC should create a new guidelines for runners. May be a fall and genuine injury to legs qualifies for taking help of a runner. Else all tiring batters will take runners to win matches and THAT is Unfair; especially while chasing!

Physical fitness is part of sports competition and Smith should very well know that other team won't let him take advantage of lack of it by employing a runner! good decision on part of Strauss!

No, don't agree. The same Strauss recalled Mathews when he was run out on Friday just because the bowler was in his way and he tripped and fell and in the process failed to reach the crease on time. No rule of cricket can rule the batsman not out. But Strauss called Mathews back. That's a great example of sportsmanship.

Pls dont forget that its the same Strauss who called back Angelo Mathews after being given run out following a collision with the bowler. And also Strauss himself told during the post match interview that even the umpires on field were not fully conviced that Smith was genuinely injured and required assistance. A tired batsman cant be given a runner; Only a genuinely injured batsman can be.I agree to what has been told by Mr.Govind Raj

You can bet your bottom dollar that Strauss would have allowed Smith a runner if SA were sinking. Strauss' sportsmanship depends on match situation. Look at his time-wasting in the first test in ashes.
