Wow...... I thought we were always on the top spot since 1932 and that was made permanent after 1983..... :)

Anyway, the way it appears, we have 3 teams closely battling it out for the number one (within one point of each other) and then we have the rest ..... :)

With B'desh in tri-series, still there is some threat. Didn't they they defeated in India couple of occasions before? So try Ireland & kenya.

Eight nations playing Cricket( International Level ) India no 2. FIFA 160 Nations playing
Soccer - India ranked 143.It's Indian Media wants to show that acheivement is great due to their hunger for TRP, India media is fond of "Big Fish Small Pond" situation. It is similar to Over Rated SRK, Salman Khan, Amir Khan who DO NOT figure any where in Forbes Celebrity list.

Now, what do u call a person who sees a link, understands it is related to cricket, clicks it, opens it, reads it, and then laments that India is not as fond of football as it is of cricket ?

Buddy, if u r interested in football, at least learn to click the relevant links and go through articles. This one is meant for cricket lovers and followers.

Gud assessment. Even in dat in y'days final our world no.2 teams players showed outstanding display. The excess of butter they use in meals was certainly came out in hands to miss 3-4 sitters & similar number of run out chances. it's gud to see sachin striving for runs after century by some fantastic line bold by malinga & co. thanks to accidental knock from yuvi or it cud have been another feather to india's loosing-in-final garland. MS didn't desearved y'day's win ... learn something from Kandamby

There are 10 Nations which are termed as Full Members of ICC 1) India 2) England 3) Australia 4) South Africa 5) Zimbabwe 6) West Indies 7) Srilanka 8) Pakistan 9) Bangladesh & 10) New Zealand. Apart from these nations there are 34 Nations who are Associate Members of ICC & around 60 Nations are Affiliate Members. Which means at least 104 Nations are playing Cricket at some level or other. Hence we must feel proud that we are amongst top 3 teams in those 104 Nations. When you are talking about Soccer, you have to admit that not more than 10-15 teams dominate the World stage & same happens in Cricket.

Mr.Milnd K. What is the Olympic track record of top cricketing Teams ? Imagine U.S, Russia, Italy, Germany and other Olympic heavy weight entering cricket( In serious manner ) and I am sure India will find it hard even to qualify for World Cup
( Like Soccer ). It is better for cricket to expand horizones of game to all continents .
In that case " India failing to qulify for World Cup" will be MUCH better than winning in 1983 where only seven nations participated. Olympic Track record is the Only criteria for deciding real sporting talent.
Cricketing World should be HUMBLE in approach as it NOT worth calling World Cup where Only seven nations participated in 1983 .It should at best be named as " Lords Open '

Mr.Kelvin if Queen had a dick she would have been king. Do not apply such priciples as of now...whichever countries playing cricket amongst them we are the second best and thats as true as the existence of Sun and moon...

Mr.Johnatan, it is NOT queen and Dick situation, Kelvin is right. Cricket world cup is actually "COMMONWELTH CUP "
where cricketers are hitting boundries and Cricket is YET to cross commonwelth boundry.
Here the objection is for the Word " World " and NOT for the game cricket it self, Cricket presentation by Indian Media is Loud and Childish.

if not many nation playing cricket that doesn't means no. 2 spot is bad. fyi countries like ireland, canada, etc do play criket but cannot get test status. same as india fairs in soccer. And how the hell is soccer better game than cricket. its personal choice. When India was top hockey side people like you might have said same about it. now same people cry about state of indian hockey.

India move up to second spot in ICC Rankings
by ANAND MS on Sep 15, 2009 11:21 AM  | Hide replies

India regained the second spot in the ICC one-day rankings following their tri-series triumph in Sri Lanka and are in with a chance to clinch the top spot if they manage a good show in the Champions Trophy.
India moved back up to second in the ODI Championship table following the 46-run victory over Sri Lanka in the final of the tri-nation series played at R Premadasa Stadium on Monday.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men had briefly enjoyed the top spot in the team rankings after beating New Zealand earlier in the series.

But slipped to the third within 24 hours of that win after being beaten by the home side on September 12.

The same day Australia beat England by seven wickets at Lord's to sneak ahead into second position.

But yesterday's victory put India back to within a single ratings point of South Africa and with just two points separating first from third in the table, everything is set up for a rankings showdown at the ICC Champions Trophy, which gets underway in South Africa on September 22.

Before the Champions Trophy, Australia could go top of the rankings if they manage a clean sweep against England.
