Continued2.. Bowling strategy for India
by Nikhil Shah on Nov 29, 2009 10:06 AM

One consolation for both Sreesanth and Ishant about their eco rate in ODIs has been the eco rate of a genuine speedstar like Dale Steyn of 5.25 as compared to Brett Lee. With the introduction of power plays and fielding restrictions earlier in the 90s the bar for ODI eco rates have to be lowered. Kapil's eco rate in the 80s in the 60 over format was 3.78 and things have worsened since then for Srinath with 50 over format and add fielding restrictions and now along with power plays eco rates of 5.25 has been the norm. But as TA Shekar insists on increasing pace then it may be better for Ishant and Sreesanth to avoid playing ODIs completely and can become fringe players who can bowl in dead rubbers just to stay in rythm since we play very little Tests.

Continued... New understanding of our bowling strategy
by Nikhil Shah on Nov 29, 2009 09:51 AM

Both Ishant and Sreesanth are quick, but not quick enough to make a serious dent in the ODI game like Brett Lee, who bowls around 149kph on Indian pitches. This enables Lee to slow down the scoring rate. In our case, Ishant and Sreesanth just have the right pace to be scored on in the ODI game but nothing like Lee who can slow down with wickets. Hence the solution for India is to go with Praveen and Nehra. Interestly, all the seamers we have looked at in the past decade have struggles in the Test arena: Agarkar, RP Singh, and even Nehra and accuracy was simply not good enough to succeed in Tests. Thus the future Test bowling pair for India is Ishant/Sreesanth and this may not be the premier ODI pair of future since the eco rates are 5.6 and 5.78 respectively. An adjustment which will require us to look at a seam bowling pair in the sub-continent of the quality of Zaheer and Nehra. Both Zaheer and Nehra are close to 30 in age and maybe Zaheer can take a break in Test matches on the sub-continent and let Sreesanth and Ishant focus on being a pair. Another improvement in Sreesanth we saw was his freshness and this means that just like Nehra who quit for 1-2 years resting your body completely raises your level and intensity and burn out the bowlers can be another factor in poor performances from the current lot, namely Ishant.

New bowling strategy for India
by Nikhil Shah on Nov 29, 2009 08:44 AM

During the early years of Ganguly, he introduced a very significant strategy in the 1-day game which raised the ODI standards in India, by seperating ODI batting and Test match batting. Batting strikes became important in the ODIS and introduction of players like Sehwag, Yuvraj and now Raina and Dhoni has added the extra dimension to the ODI game for India. With the return of Sreesanth, we now have a new understanding of our fast bowling strategy. This happens when we seperate ODI bowling from Test match bowling which requires more pace and higher bowling strike rates. In ODI bowling the economy rates played an important role, but with the decline in Ishant whose economy rate of 5.5 and Sreesanth's whose bowling ODI ECO rate is also above 5.7 This has led us to a new understanding of our bowling resources. For ODIs Zaheer has been supported by Nehra and Praveen who have better ECO rate ---- and in Test matches Zaheer has support from Ishant, and now the resurgent Sreesanth who is pacy and has a better bowling strike rate. This ushers a new ERA in Indian cricket where pace is problemtic in the ODI game in the sub-continent and in the 7 4 bowler formats the ECO rates for the pacy seamers have become a liability. I hope this trend continues where Ishant and Sreesanth will continues in the Test match arena and Nehra and Praveen in the ODIs to support Zaheer.

Chris Town the fastest ever
by Ryan Christopher on Nov 28, 2009 08:57 PM

it is chris town, clocking 161.7 in england the fastest recoded ball, patterson patrick might clocked better, but no official record can be found abou that. devon malcolm in his prime use to clock the upeer mid ranges of 150s and he been capable to go a 160 plus mark for no doubt, shooib clocked 161.1 once, brett clocked too. when u clock above 155kph, u r crossing or about to cross human limits.

Balaji would have been the greatest bowler for india if he had not got injured. Sreesanth definitely is the best bowler of swing and reverse swing at the moment.

So Mr. Gowda gopala why were your other bowlers "lucky enough to get wickets". Wouldn't it be more prudent if you said they didn't bowl well as Sreesanth?

Mr. Gowda Gopala, Sreesanth has the best Test average (30.26) of all the Indian fast bowlers now in action. And you would say that to is due to luck. Luck can favour a person in one match. But if you are going to say luck favours a man in most matches nobody is going to take you, it has to have some element of hard work and talent in it. Try to acknowledge other's effort man, rather than always finding faults with others.
