Aussies always pick the right team as per the form of the current players and considering the needs of the team. Watson may not be great opening batsman, but he does his job - whatever assigned to him by his skipper ponting, besides being a not to bad bowler. Pnting knows what he wants and the selectors duly agree with him. The current form of the specialist openers is not so good. The Aussie selectors dont give the baggy green easily and this makes it tougher for the young guys to earn it, thereby making them work harder to earn it. Besides making them wait and Cap-Hungry, it also gives them rest for the tougher battles ahead.

go check the stats of shane watson as a batsman as well as bowler. Then you will agree with Mr.Jeff Thomson, why he is angry with Hilditch. Shane Watson is not Test Material at all. If you want him in the team, then he should be played as a middle order player and he should bowl more and take wickets. Otherwise, there is no point in having him in test match cricket.
