Legendary Mohinder Amarnath desrves the C K Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award more than anybody else. The award should have been confered upon him long back. Any way for good things it is never late. He was an outstanding talent in cricket world and is great person of multi dimension. He is a viabrant human being. Congrats,

I still consider him as the most technically correct batsman India have ever seen. It is pity that he did not get a chance to be the captain of India when the politics made Vengsarkar the Captain. Of late he should be the right choice for coaching India when there is a chance. I will never forget his batting in Pakistan, West Indies during 1982-83. Always the title of newspapers at that time read like this. Mohinder for the rescue of India'. And I have all the newspaper cutting of that time. One of his failure I could remember - His score in test against West Indies since then in three consecutive innings - 0,0, 0,0, 0,1. Then Mohinder himself commented he discovered a new telephone number for his wife in England. 'He is often referred to as a man of many returns'. Because whenever the selectors discard him he would come back with a century or good score.'

I am so happy that he got this award. He is my alltime favourite cricketer.

Holding and Marshall bowling at their top speeds and with all the guile they were famed for

And Dicky Ratnagar on the mike for AIR giving his commentary in his inimitable and unforgettable style.....

Rich memoirs of another day...

Jimmy Amarnath

He was a great batsman, a greater all-rounder, and a courageous cricketer. He faced Holding, Roberts and Thomson with courage and ease - and it was the same courage of his which enabled him to call a spade a spade - when he described the Indian selectors "a bunch of jokers"!

INDIAN CRICKETERS
by Anurag on Nov 10, 2009 07:06 PM  | Hide replies

Thanks to Jimmy & Kapil to give us our only world cup. Both of them played for our country.
In my top 5 favourite indian criketer list I always kept them at top.
1.Kapil Dev-Greatest all rounder India ever produced(May be world)& give us WC.
2.Mohinder Amarnath-Give us WC, performer, quality batsman against fast bowling & body language.
3.Sourav Ganguly-Best left handed batsman of India,Best Captain, fighter(I think selector would not do justice with Ganguly and Amarnath),temperment, tough body language & cricketing sense.
4.Sachin Tendulker-Record holder, entertainer & best ODI batsman in the world.
5.Sunil Gavasker-Greatest batsman India ever produced & criketing sense.
Tendulker placed behind Ganguly because he is not a big match winner & temperment problem otherwise I am a big fan of him than of Ganguly.

I know so many controvercy will be their but this is my personal view.Sorry if I hurt anyone.

great list, funny though that BCCI and the people that oversee it do not regard our greats with the same unbiased view.Kapil Dev our ONLY great WC-Winning captain has not been rewarded the life-time achievement award,in our country their is a tendency to felicitate people according to personal- liking not sheer hard-work & result as in Kapil's case.

I like Ganguly for his conviction of mind and his sweet timing.

While I agree with most of your comments, it seems, your love for Ganguly trumps the facts.

Sachin Tendular is not a match winner? Where does that come from?
When you surround him with 10 other bums, he has to play it alone and win the game for you?

How many times have other indian batsman let him down in games, where he takes india close to the line only to see the others show a lack of effort?

For me, he is the greatest in his era. No other batsman had to carry the weight of expectations on his shoulder like he has done. Not even Gavaskar.

Sunil Gavaskar came at a time when India was least respected in the international arena. He was the first Indian batsman to give confidence to us. Sachin, also a great batsman, built on from where Gsvaskar left. So, I think Gavaskar is greater since he first built the empire.

However, I agree that no comparison is possible between two greats.

As for Sourav, he was perhaps the Indian captain (after Kapil Dev) to make us believe in ourselves.

Great choices i must tell you but my personal feeling is that there couldn't be any list without Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid...Rahul any day is a better batsmen than Amarnath and a proven match winner(esp in tests)..And i belive Anil is the greatest player for India..!!!

Shame of BCCI
by Abhay Sharma on Nov 10, 2009 05:22 PM

The man who has given us the Only World cup had not been given this honor just bcoz of EGO between current BCCI Board. Corrupt people r ruling the board just 4 making money. They don’t consider the pain of players due 2 whom they earn money by sitting in Ac rooms. If team wins all credit goes to selection committee but if team looses captain is there 2 get the blame.

Different award(s)
by Shankar Nag on Nov 10, 2009 05:17 PM  | Hide replies

Mohinder should have been given "Lifetime Under-Achiever" award rather.

BCCI also can give awards such as,
1. "Mr. Let the team down when most needed award" to Yuvaraj Singh
2. "Mr. Play for the records award" to Sachin
3."Mr. Full time model-Part time cricketer award" to Dhoni
4. "Mr. Eccentric and overhyped award" to Bhaji
5. "Mr Airhead and run donor award" to Munaf Patel
6. "Mr One Hundred followed by 10 single digit award" to Shewag
7. "Mr Insane and cry baby award" to Srishant
8. "Mr Talk more do nothing award" to Gambhir
9. "Mr Squander victory award" to Jadeja
10. "Mr Catch practice to opposition team" to Ashish Nehra

and finally "Richest and pathetic losers award" to the current Indian Team.

You were a silent performer, and never did you make your presence felt than when the team needed you the most.

And, yes, like your father, you too were given a very raw deal by the selectors, whom you very correctly called "buffoons".

I feel Jimmy was under utilized. He was capable of much more. What a talent? He was born with a cricket bat and ball in his hands. He could have played easily for 100 test and India could have won many more matches.BCCI/selecters should learn and we should not let such a talent go waste in future.

An award to well deserved candidate
by Jay on Nov 10, 2009 03:49 PM

Jimmy Amarnath had nerves of steel. He was at his best when facing the best:

His contribution to chasing 400 target in Port of Spain, scoring century in Perth and Bridgetown, the fastest of pitches, when the best bowlers attacked relentlessly, performance in 1983 world cup were all really great. He also used to bowl much better than what the statistics show and towards the end, adapted to ODIs much better than other players of his generation.

There were several outstanding display of courage in his career: The best I can recall is his 60 not out when India was forced to declare at 97/5 in Kingston, 1976 as the rest of the batsmen were in hospital injured by brutal Holding.

Whenever he was dropped by egoistic selectors, he never complained and always came back even stronger. It was too much for him to be dropped again finally in 1988-89 when he had just taken India to victory in Asia cup in a minefield of a pitch in Dhaka against Pakistan. That was when he called the selectors a bunch of jokers. They were really jokers and has not changed much since then.

Another point to appreciate is he also (like Sachin) played for more than 20 years in International cricket. Half of the time he was neglected by the selectors. So when comparing his records with others, people have to know that he missed many years when he was at his peak due to the treatment by selectors.
