I hope LARA plays IPL next year
by Ideal on Jun 03, 2009 09:08 PM

It would be great if LARA joins a IPL team next year. Think of Warne vs Lara, Tendulkar vs Lara or something like that.

That will bring new energy to IPL. Wish he joins one of the franchisee. Say LARA and TENDULKAR in same team against Warne or WARNE and LARA in same team. Would love to see that. That doesnt guarantee them a win. They may yet lose. Still would make great entertainment.

ICL
by Bipul Kumar on Jun 03, 2009 11:47 AM  | Hide replies

BCCI was fighting a lost battle with ICL till last year when ICL was investing money. IPL was a blessing in disguise for them because it increased the popularity of T20 cricket.

When recession hit the world and sponsers dried up Zee TV stopped paying salary to ICL players and stopped tournaments. Players realised that they have joined a crap that works only if there is a money inflow. Zee TV has nothing to do with cricket or cricketers. So they decided to leave. ICL was happy to let them go to reduce their bill.

If in future it becomes a profitable business again they will crop up again and some fools like Kapil will again step up to join them. Thank God that it has did it's own death without ruining some good players' career completely.

This business is all about reputation. Its doubtful any one will join them again, if they start the league. The talent will not flow to ICL anymore.

Just the business model is wrong. If ur running a corporate, to cover losses too u need to continue to invest with new brands. In other words, ICL and Zee tv needed to invest and continue doing that for two more years. Being a corporate they shoudl have known that. Unfortunately, Subash chandra and team have given up. Now, it will be difficult to re-coup and no one will join again even if they open.

I am looking forward to LAra severing ties and playin IPL next year.

ICL
by Bipul Kumar on Jun 03, 2009 11:25 AM  | Hide replies

People think that BCCI lured players to move out of ICL but if you dig deep you will easily see that the fact is ICL didn't want to pay a penny more on this venture because they figured out that it's not profitable anymore.

They didn't pay the salaries for months. They didn't conduct a tournament on a lame excuse of 26/11. And they let players go because it is not profitable enough for them.

ICL deserves it
by shantanu on Jun 03, 2009 11:05 AM  | Hide replies

The sole purpose of starting the ICL was television rights,if he really cares so much about indian sport he should have invested in hockey, shooting, wrestling, boxing. The reason he came to cricket was just MONEY.Young boys who play on the domestic circuit were lured with money reducing the talent pool which hurts the indian team.Where was ZEE when cricket in india didnt have the money?? The BCCI stood by its players in the toughest times right from the beginning, since 1995 it was freed from doordarshan and made money which it pours in the pockets of players, bigger stadiums, better payments in domestic games.Name another sporting body that cares about its players?? We pay crores to sportsmen when they win olympic medals, but dont give them the money when they need it to prepare for the olympics,if u say other sports have no sponsors, remember sumthing the GOVERNMENT is the biggest sponsor, boxers had to plead to force the sports ministry to send trainers with them to beijing, wrestlers were not given messuers, thats the condition of sports in our country.BCCI being a pvt organisation is showing others how its done, yes they have their faults, but atleast they do a better job then most sporting bodies in this country.Dhanraj kicked out unceremoniously, resquinha quits cuz of bad treatment, jugraj still not making it to the team,P.T.Usha begging for a synthetic running tracks for her academy,Rooms for the womens hockey team are dirty and filthy ,stink of piss.BCCI is far better.

Stop your crap. We are SICK of it.

I have no idea why you keep poping up with your Muslim player support time and again. It's an Indian team. Only best XI should get a chance whatever their religion, caste, creed, region blah blah.

Irfan was my favourite player when he was on his peak, now he is no good. Yusuf is hit or miss player. Zaheer is good but he needs to recover and other selected fast bowlers are better than Munaf. And who are these shadab and asad. There are 100 more talented players then these 2 who should have been in this team ahead of them.

So, stop writing JUNK, nobody likes it.

Greed did them in
by devraj chakraborti on Jun 03, 2009 10:10 AM  | Hide replies

People are leaving ICL not because ICL is not a viable model. Its only beacuse IPL is a hit and given a chance anybody would opt for better oppertunities. IPL teams are alraedy cramped with players who are sitting out and earning money as well as getting international recognition. Tell me this the players knew they would be banned before joining ICL and still they did because they are greedy and gave in for the big bucks. If IPL would have started before I doubt how many players would have gone in for the ICL. All these players were not in a position to get national calls and so just wanted to use ICL as a platform and earn money as well. Hats off to Kapil and Subhash that they could convince so many players to give up hope of national selection and join their league. If tomorrow I start my own backyard league and can manage to form 10 teams comprising so many international players and good talent who are ready to risk their career then I sould be given credit. Dont you think so.

This was similar to "monday night war",when wwe was fighting with wcw,wcw was live and wwe was recorded, wcw would tell ppl the outcome of the wwe matches 3 mins before the wwe show started, and ran wcw at the same time as wwe, wwe raw lost tv ratings and lost superstars to wcw, finally wwe started doing well with innovative ideas and destroyed wcw,Mcmahon bought wcw and ended it forever.
