ponting has not realized that he's been very unpopular right through. perhaps arrogance clouded him all these years, and now that the undisputed champion tag is gone, he sees that his team and his ways are unpopular.
The Australians in general, and Ricky Ponting in particular are hated across the cricketing world because of their greatness. Every Tom, Dick and Harry loves to pelt stones at achievers and champions to hide their own inabilities, deficiencies and disappointments. That's normal. Come on Ricky...whatever they say, you are one of the greatest batsmen- if not the greatest of them all - to play the game. And that's exactly why they love to hate you.

Brazil have won 5 football world cups, why such comment's are not heard about Brazilian footballers?

Mental Zach,we all know you washed the Australian's clothes and cutlery before you became Rediff's resident expert on Australians uin general and their cricketers in particular. But you need to get over your hang ups and your obsession, take your medications regularly and introspect. The Australians are hated not because of their greatness...Clive Lloyds West Indies were great too if not greater. The Australians and Ponting are hated because of them being sore losers, their tendency to run down their opponents and the Umpires when they lose, and their arrogance.Arrogance doesn't make you great...some other readers have pointed out names like Federer,Woods,Borg,Sampras,Don Bradman,etc...who are far greater than Ricky Ponting and his team but are much more loved and respected.Give respect and take it, it's that simple. No one denies Ricky is a great batsman and a pleasure to watch, and no one pelts stones at his records or abilities...it's attitude that's what's being discussed here.So you need to address your obvious mental disabilities, deficienceis and disappointments (to use your own words), and get a grip on yourself.

Ponting lifted the World Cup three times. None of our current crop of overpaid cricketers ever did. It's clear that the T20 WC win was also a complete fluke.
Keep personal opinions aside, appreciate the game and love the greats.
Ponting is certainly right up there with the best.

Kiddy, obvioulsy your attention span is very short.Go through what I said and you will see I have not cast aspersions at Ponting's greatness.I spoke about attitude.I think you should take your own advice and appreciate the game and not make stupid comments about flukes.Grow up Kiddy!

u are correct anuraug. People still remembers how ponting behaved in that infamous Sydney test. champions are always liked by everyone but definitely not arrogance. Ponting can never be liked by anyone (may except people like Zach. Everybody knows that Austrialia lifted the world cup because of their overall quality as a team and DEFINITELY NOT BECAUSE OF PONTING's captaincy. In fact it was inspite of Ponting's captaincy.

good cricket is appreciated by all cricket fans, but, if a person is boorish, he deserves to be booed. i think ponting is a fair target because of his stinky attitude.
Ricky, I think u r the worst sportsperson as far as the spirit of the game is concerned. There are numerous occasions when you have shown ur childish behaviour and double standards of ur talking: 1. During 1998, when harbhajan was still a kid , he got ricky out stumped, and while leaving ricky uttered bad words about bhajji. That was the beginning of so called great friendship between bhajji and ricky. 2. During India's tour of australia in 1999, when ricky could not play one bouncer from Srinath properly, he was frustrated and again uttered non sense words for Srinath.
3. In the first match of the current ashes, on the final day, when Anderson changed his gloves twice, ricky said that it was against the spirit of the game, however when during the 2005 ashes, australia was struggling on the final day and England needed only 2 wickets to win the test, ponting was there, but he got out as 9th wicket. He took ages to walk out of the ground, where was his sportsmanship that time? Why he wasted that much time when he had got out?

4. This one is the biggest....During the 2007 ODI series when australia toured india, in the 7th match, Murali karthik nicked brett lee but the umpire dint give him out and ultimately India went on to win that particular match. In the presentation, ponting said that karthik should have himself walked down to the pavillion when he had nicked the ball. Now, everyone knows, wat happened during India's tour of australia in 2007-2008. Did he tell the same thing to himself or symonds. Ponting ganguly and dhoni caught him down the leg side, he did not walk himself when mark benson dint give him out...when ponting advises other player to walk, why he doesn't do it himself. Or why dint he ask symonds the same thing, when bucknor dint give symonds out on such a big nick to ishant...in the same match, clarke gave a huge nick to the bowling of anil kumble and was still waiting when the umpire gives him out...Ponting was appealing all the false catches during the match. Dravid was given out, when his glove or bat was far away from the ball. Ganguly was given out when clarke had touched the ball to the ground before claiming the catch...
And still ponting asks other teams and playes to play in the spirit of the game...How funny...has he ever seen his face in the mirror?

AG:
;-).... on the same note, Indians didn't agree with Symonds or Ponting, so you shouldn't be agreeing with Karthik either.... :) Right?.... :) So going by your own logic, we Indians "cheat" too.... right?.... :)

come on yaar. Nobody says that Ponting is THE ONLY CHEAT. Everybody says that PONTING IS A CHEAT. That's it. He always advise other teams to behave 100% perfectly and but he and his team will not behave even 1% perfectly. Recent Ashes test (1st test) is the best example when he grumbled about the time delaying tactics of England whereas he and his team did that hundred times previously. It is a legitmate tactics employed by any team to save a match. But on the other hand, Ponting employs all antics to win a test(Sydney test between India and Austrlaia is the best example) at any cost and at the same time blames others. He can NEVER be liked by anyone.
ricky if u win with illegal means u win only game but if accpet failures gracefully u win hearts.
had u accpeted the wrong things in sydney test against india and some more occasions against varioues teams u will be remembered as great sportsman of all times because u r perfect player/ perfect captain only thing lacking is perfect sportsmanship.
u accept failures and victories with same grace. atleast from now on words
even though i dont like what england and straus did in lords test but they thought a good lesson to ricky and aussies how u will be if opposite teams wins with out cleanly.

When will Ponting realise that he is not in good books as far as his behaviour and sportsmanship is concerned..there are several examples where it is proved beyond doubt that he is a great batsman and the same is equally true for his behaviour and sportsmanship...so its time he stops wondering and starts improvising..
