What struck me most about this story is how Kapil talks about Gavaskar. According to newspapers, the two did not get along, it's probably not true but that is the story. Yet, he recognizes and acknowledges his greatness.
Only a great human being can do this! We already know Kapil as the classy cricketer but here he shows that he is a classy human being!
I wonder How ICC give rank 26 to Sachin ? He should come down to Drvid! Dravid is always better player in foreign pitches.! most of them shout blindly against ranking of sachin. But we have to accept it, and think of it, how many times this master batted well in a difficult pitches. Instead of shouting for sachin, Indians should shout for Kapil or Kumbles rankings , it is acceptable.
Rankings are bull shit. Even deaf , dumb and blind can easily single out only those as great players who are unfornutaley not in the list at present. Players like hayden.. have brought bad reputation to the game besides their performance. What about that?

Aah, teams have done away with going with 5 bowlers into a test match. Resting 3 bowlers while 2 bowlers operate had been a strategy in the past.
I would take Khan out and include V.V.S. to your list.

It has to be Subhash Gupte instead of Kumble ..he is said to be the best ever indian leggie
I am really amazed to see the hue and cry from illiterate Indian cricketers over Sachin being placed at number 26 in all time ICC cricket ratings. ICC applies a formula to rate all current cricketers. And they publish the rating for all batsmen and bowlers and people (the Indian Cricketers and cricket lovers) do not have any problem with that as far as the current players ratings are concerned. Now applying the same formula they calculated the ratings of all players of the past. Then they looked at the highest rating a player has obtained during his life time. Then they published the names of the players according to the highest ratings they obtained at some point of their cricket life. Sachin is a great player with high average rating (800-850) during his entire carrier. However he never crossed 900 rating points. That's why it's quite natural that he would be at number 26 below Sangakkara or Chandrapaul of Hayden

Everyone knows that some stupid logic has been used by the Idiot Cricket Council. But they should not be using this in a ranking system where it has no relevance

Cricket fanatic, The question actually is, should the same formula that ranks current players be applied to rank all time greats??? Forget about Sachin or any Indian player (may be you have disliking for Indians for your own reasons), When the likes of Brian Lara and Wasim Akram don't find top places, then there is only one place for such ranking and that is DUST BIN.

Ranking is based entirely upon how a cricketer played against other contemporary players. All the records of the former players in all the international matches are available since the first test matches. So using the same formula the rating of the all the players were calculated taking into account how thee played against their contemporary players. Anyone with slight idea of how computer software works can easily figure out that computer can calculate the ratings in a fraction of a second if you have the programme and if you feed with the data. So if you do not have any problem with the current ranking of players you should not have any problem with former players ratings, since that was calculated taking into account how they played against their contemporary players.
very valid points he made. gav was the one who had to face the best atack of his time on the best bowling friendly pitches unlike of todays' batsman friendly pitches/rules, etc. also what abt a batsman like andy flower one of the best but in the weakest team had to play against better attacks of opponents.
Why is so much noise being made over the ICC rankings? When or why does thier opinion matter in any way, shape or form? Do we need "rankings" to justify the value of Sachin as a cricketer or what he means to the country? A true value of the cricketer can be asessed by his peers and by the fans and not "averges" or numbers. Ask any fan on the road what Sachin or Rahul means to the game, he is not going to blurt out averages of the top of his head but speak from his heart about the value of Sachin and Dravid and the years they have given hope to the country. Best to just ignore the ICC. Cricket is a game that appeals to the eye and the heart not to the head. That's why averages matter zilch in measuring the greatness of a cricketer. I'd watch the falmboyance of Kapil or Richards batsmanship anyday over the stoic boredom of Gooch or Border.
