i think the declartion of the match between australia and pakistan is the enough score for the paksistans coz they do not have good batting line up speically the middle order batsman yonus khan is not there in the team , i think that the pakistans must need a good batting line up and they should be very stiff batting like watson is batting in the australians

He just 28 years Old and already have 33 test wins as Captain. He may play from another 6 years as captain and Ponting in 2 yr or max 4 yr (Home or Away Ashes) will be retire or thrown out. If it is happening G.Simith will end up as the most successful Test Captain ever.

Good observation.

Since South Africa has signed a "life long captaincy" contract with Smith, you are right that he will end up with 77 test victories in the next 6 years. :)

He is the best captain. The best batsman who doesn't play play for his personal records. And compared to all the so called Indian Legends the best fielder on the cricket ground. A Total Package. Let us not be jealous and praise him for his talent.

yea Ponting can whine but he has been part of 3 wcup winning teams,so losing even in a sledge might hurt compared to ur hero loser sachin who has never featured in a wcup winning team..
ur jealous of ponting cause his team AUS have won wcups 4 times and ur hero sachin has no idea how it feels to be part of winning team WCUP or any big tourney

Ricky Ponting's job is to be a cricketer NOT a role model. He will always be remembered for being an awesome batsman and captain. Just like Warne who'll be remembered for his legspinning skills than his sex-capades.

... it is a result of the great team he had at his disposal.
by Praveen Kumar on Dec 28, 2009 09:22 PM  | Hide replies

Hi all,
Ponting is not a great captain but he was blessed with a great team that enabled him to get such great results. Give him a team like West Indies or Pakistan and see if he can achieve a quarter of what he has achieved - both personally and as a captain.

Here are the figures to substantiate what I said above. After Ponting took over captaincy in early 2004, Aussies have played 70 Test matches of which they won 44 lost 11 and drawn 14. It is an impressive record.

If you drill it down further and check the games where he had great players like Warne, McGrath playing it is even more impressive. 39 played, won 29, lost 3 and drawn 3.

What happens after Warne and McGrath retire??? Not as impressive record. Played 31, won 15, lost 8 and drawn 7.

Look at his own batting record, during the time he was with the other great players in the team, his test batting average is impressive around 60.00 and after that period, it is a normal 42.80. Check his batting average in India, it is about 20.85, which is mediocre by any standards.

If he has to be considered a great player/batsman/captain, he needs to have consistent performance in all conditions with all kinds of teams.

Ponting story is not over yet. I agree with you partly now but I like what I am seeing from Ponting. He inherited a great team and it is hard for any captain to adjust from that. Ponting is getting better though. I'm pretty sure that by the time he retires, Aus will be top ranked test team. ACB is keeping Punter because they know that only he is capable to do it.

You can see very clearly that the team is on the decline and Ponting too. You have the numbers posted above to see for yourself. By the time he is retired - which will be in soon - the team will see worse days.

Next in line for the captaincy, Clarke is no good either - as a person, but only time will tell how he will lead this confused unit.

Ponting & Bucknorn partnership
by Hooter on Dec 28, 2009 08:28 PM  | Hide replies

This great partnership of Ponting & Bucknor has won many tests & test series.

If Ponting retires & writes a book, he should give due credit to Bucknor for winning so many series in partnership.

No doubt, Ponting is one of the modern day great batsmen but not a great captain & not a leader who set examples on the field of cricket.

Aussies are known for playing it hard but there is a thin line between fair cricket and playing it hard.

But when others play hard, they are reported and banned for next couple of tests and ODIs.

True you said it right Can you tell me what resources India had in fast bowling when ganguly tendulkar ruled.
I would say gangully was the best Indian captain who fought will limited resoures and so is dhoni who is fortunate to have battery of fast bowlers sharp fielders and very strong batting line up.

Thats what I want to say. Creating and utilizing the resources is captain's job. Resources are not available so easily. Ganguly created people like Sehwag, Yuvraj, Harbhajan and mentored them to successful cricketers. Thats why Ganguly was a successful captain.

Shane Watson, Siddle, Bollinger, Haddin, Hussey, hauritz are creation of Ponting to fill the space created by the yesterday's stalwarts. And managing those stalwarts was not an easy job as well.
