I don't mind if test cricket dies. Those players who got test berth never looked back at domestick cricket unless and until they were thrown of the test squad, thereby causing the death of domestic cricket. I am glad test cricket is going to sooner or later.
One of the drawbacks of test cricket is it is slow and there is more often a chance that it can end in a stale mate. If we can come up with a system that will credit each side for the performances in any given session irrespective of the final result (this needs different considerations - such weather, pitch, current state of the teams in the session runs scored, wickets taken etc. ) - the formulae should be transparent and credits should be flashed in real time, besides the actual score card. There must be due weightage also for the end result. If planned and executed well, test cricket will be more interesting and appealing. In fact it will offer significant opportunity for an astute follower of the game to have more say and participation in all departments of the game.
Test cricket popularity started to decline in UK and Australia as football and rugby becoming popular even before 50 over cricket took over. Infact Kerry packer revived interest in cricket with the introduction of professional cricket and limited over game. Test cricket started to get too one dimensional and slow during the seventies and was getting too bring for the crowds. Today test cricket has become more interesting because the 50 and 20 over game has built in new skills in batting that encourages faster scoring and the game finds more results. True people today dont fing tme to watch test cricket but it has its own fans who want to see 3 slips and a gully with a brett lee bowling at 150 km/h. the concept of innings / declaration and following on are not understood by youngsters brough up on a diet of lim over game. We have bring youngsters to watch the game get them involved and popularity will automatically grow.

hellow UK is new to test and 50 over (like new couple) in the beggining is would be nice. this is the reason why test crict started popularity in UK ok
The debate is going and going and going.... I suggest the following for test cricket's survival;
Implement all the rules of ODI and T20 into the test cricket; like powerplay, free hit, etc. Also the rule should be same for calling wide and for bouncers.
In test, people are bored due to these restrictions, where bowlers are allowed to make yen number of bouncers and wides are not called wides as in ODIs. That's the main reason the game is slowing down.
i know these are the beauty of test cricket, but to attact more people in the stadium this can be helpful...

if you bring all the rules of odi and t20 to test then why play test at all ? the idea of test cricket is pure cricket. the bowlers try to take a wicket and batsman try to score runs. yes some negative tactics can be handled. but one rule test cricket will do well to take from t20. when there play interrupted too much time is wasted to start play. also having dugouts in test crciket would also be a nice idea so less time is wasted while a batter is out and next one is coming in. urgency needs to be brought in.

KS: You are right, the rules for ODI / T20 needs to be applied to test matches also to make it more competitive (especially the wides / bouncers as you said)
One does not require any skills to play in 20-20. The day will come if you have political and financial influence you can play 20-20. Even a mentally handicapped person can play 20-20. It will lead to the amalgamation of baseball and cricket. 20-20 games shows our laziness. Cricket is a game and not business. Test cricket JAI HO!!
