Factually incorrect article!!
by Bhasmasur Rakshas on Aug 07, 2009 12:03 PM

First of all, Australia cannot have been undefeated for 34 years at Headingley Leeds.......

The famous Botham test happened at Headingley Leeds in 1981 and that is only 28 years back....England won that one by 18 runs inspite of following on.....

England also beat Australia in the 1st Test at Headingley in 1985 by 5 wickets...so it has to be 24 years.....

Also, when Ponting says that Australia have not had a single drawn test since 1975 at Headingley, it does not mean that Aus have won all the times...England won at Headingley in 1981 and 1985 and since 1985, Aus have won at Headingley whenever they have played there....

It is 24 years since Australia have not lost at Headingley and not 34...

Which mean that from 1989 onwards, Aus have always won at Headingley...but does that really mean anything??

1989 to 2001, Australia have thrashed England everytime in Ashes in England...
So, they have not just won at Headingley, they have also won handsomely everywhere else...

1989 : 4-0
1993 : 4-1
1997 : 3-2
2001 : 4-1

In 2005, there was no test at Headingley!!

Its typing mistake of the rediff correpondent... instead of 24 its mistyped as 34.
Even in your sentence... 'Australia cannot have been undefeated for 34 ..' which is grammatically wrong.

It is not mistyped as 34.....it is a factually incorrect assessment based on the statistic that Australia have not played a drawn test here since 1975.......

And don't pick on someone's grammatical errors just to gain a few brownie points cos it is totally out of context here......the point is that Rediff and its sources are poor historians...

Btw, "Australia cannot have been undefeated for 34.." is correct English.........

"Australia could not have been......" changes the meaning of what is purported to be told.....

BR:

Australia hasn't played a drawn test since 1975 goes in to show that Headingly is a result oriented pitch....

Then if you take into consideration the typo of 34 v/s 24, everything is correct...

Aussies will lose the Headingely test and po nting will be sacked as captain for the next series. England will win back their lost glory of 2005. This is not my prediction.
English team is looking good and with inclusion of Sidebottom and possibl Harmison could prove tough for the aussies. Swann is bowling brilliantly. If Freddie is fit again, it will be a bonus.Broad and Bopara should be removed from squad.

When did Aussies started looking for excuses like favorite ground? Thought any ground was good enough for them to beat any team in the world.
