Wonder what tendulkar would respond
by guess me on Aug 27, 2009 08:17 AM

I wonder what sachin would be thinking.
We are thinking here comparison is not sensible or not correct. I guess sachin must be thinking even comparison is a great achievement.
Which other batsman has been or will be compared with the great don? And I can bet that all the future great batsman will be compared with sachin (if right handed) and lara(if left handed). I guess its an honour only sachin will have to be even compared to a man who has a record of almost century per match. Ofcourse everyone will have opinion, but i think comparison is also a great thing. And yes as the great commentator sidhu paaji said "statistics are like bikini, they reveal more but what they hide is more important"
Personally, I feel both are gifted players, tendulkar more gifted because of the era and the country he was born in. If tendulkar retires now (for any unseen circumstances which I dont want personally), ricky ponting might break the record of 12000 but he will never be compared with don. Only sachin will. and that says enough that sachin and don , both are greatest ever. A League Apart.

Boycott the boycott :)
by sanjeev kumar on Oct 21, 2008 02:26 PM  | Hide replies

Its easy to say this and that. What about him? Boycott was playing for England until he was 42 and didnt allow youngsters into the game. I feel breaking records is more difficult now than what it was in 1940-60's. In the olden days matches were slow and considered to be gentlemans game. Cricket has evolved from being gentlemans game to fast pased, aggressive game. So, nowadays it is difficult to stick to the national team for long hauls. If you dont perform in 1 or 2 series, you are out of the squad for an year or two and chances of you breaking the records lessens. Look at both sides of the coin mate!

Agreed but than you must consider the fact that in those old days there were less protective gears as comapred to the ones the batsman wear these days. Also the rules of bouncer have changed and how can you forget the bodyline series. So what Mr. Boycott is saying is correct.

Tendulkar was better in a fewer ways and Don was better in a fewer ways
by true indian on Oct 21, 2008 01:45 PM  | Hide replies

Guys, Tendulkar was really good at batting against all oppositions and all bowlers and there is nothing called a nemesis bowler for him. Even if they came, their run was a limited one. The best bowler who has taken him out has taken him only 6 times in his entire carrer and tendulkar's 200 innings! Also, Tendulkar has batted against 12 nations and umpteen number of pitches of different styles.

Whereas Don hasnt played in more than 2 countries and the pitches were all the same (bouncy). Players during that era had averages of 55 quite commonly. And the bowlers were the same and the opposition teams were only 3 primarily most of England and a bit of India/West Indies. the greatest player always stands out with a unique record which will have a very very distinct second. And thats where Don was so good at. His Strike Rate, his average and his number of 200s and three hundreds which is unmatched even today after playing so many matches by the players. Thats why he is a don. And T
endulkar is also the greatest of this generation because of his 16000 and 12000 (28000) international runs which is next to impossible for anyone to break, irrespective of how many ever matches anyone plays. Finally, without any doubt, both are undisputed Dons of their eras.

BRADMAN VS SACHIN
Iam sure none of us would have seen don's play considering our age. But we should accept the fact that don had told his wife one watching Sachin Tendulkar Hey look at this young man playing for india and his cricketing style resembles my good old circketing days and this his how i palyed. Its a great credit for Tendulkar from the LEGEND. So we we need to mess up with who is the best batsman in the world if sachin has been appreciated by the Legend.

Bradman vs Sachin
by seno jose on Oct 20, 2008 12:32 PM  | Hide replies

It’s not wise to compare the two great cricketers of all time. Definitely Bradman has a better record in terms of average. But the situation is different then and now. Sachin is undoubtedly the most studied batsman by the opponents. Technology helps the opponents a lot to study Sachin's style, strength and weakness. This made a lot of restrictions to Sachin’s performance. Further, Sachin is always under pressure especially from media, cricket experts, and even from his own fans. This also affects Sachin’s performance. Since Bradman never faced such barriers, he could play ‘easy’ cricket and could enjoy his batting a lot. In addition, unlike a bowler, a Batman’s performance mainly depends on his concentration at the time of batting. Bradman was very much lucky in that sense since there were not many interruptions at that time to disturb his concentration (from crowds, media, opponents, etc.). Therefore the question ‘who is best?’ is not sensible.
Dr. Seno Jose

I agree with you and also i would like to add more points that erlier there was not much more technology like 3 rd umpire to judge the catch,LBW,runout etc.....Due to this technogy Sachin did not play well or missed so many century due to close decision....At the time of Bradman this kind of technogy was not available...So i would like say that east or west Sachin is Best....

PERFECTLY SAID, TO COMPARE TWO LEGENDS OF THE TIME , IT IS FOOLISHNESS, WHY YOU FORGET SUNIL GAVASKAR , THE FIRST INDIAN TO BREAK ALL THE RECORDS. HE IS ALSO A LEGEND OF HIS OWN TIME ,
NOW TECHLOGY HAS PROVIDED LOT OF EDGES TO LEARN MORE ABOUT NE TECHNICS, DONT COMPARE ANY ONE , EVERYONE HAS ITS OWN VALUE.BEING AN INDIAN WE SHOULD BE PROUD OF OUR PLAYERS

Difference is in approach
by Crick fan on Oct 20, 2008 06:27 AM

During Dons time if they were playing a test series, they used to be practicing well two/three months in advance. They were focussed on that, no other thoughts. They looked forward to playing and played with passon.
Todays cricketers are rushed through to the matches in haste. Barly 6 days separating two test series and if possible they would fit in a ODI and 20-20 series in between. Some times the player does'nt relise that he is carring forward an injury till it worsens. Players like Sachin are forced to play ingnoring minor bruses and niggles. The commerse of todays game is totally different. This is why the average to two greats are different. Both are great in their own right. But Don Stands little tall as no other batsman of his era came anywhere closer to his average.

the fact remains that he was so ahead of everybody else in his time unlike any other crickter ever
bradman avg 99.94, 2nd best batsman of the time, wally hammond avg 58
whereas tendulkar does not even have the best avg in his generation although he is arguably the best player of his generation

Bradman faced far more dangerous and deadly bowlers than Sachin did and they all batted without a helmet.

Nonsense, name five bowlers other than Larwood who were considered to be dangerous and greats of that time.... Larwood was not a great bowler either, he had bowled dangerously and harmfully only during bodyline. So shut up

Yes. Even Bradman didn't face the bowlers like Donald, McGrath, Waqar , Wasim. More than that there was no reverse swing at that time.

HAD DON PLAYED IN THIS ERA HIS STATISTICS WOULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT
by Arijit Dutta on Oct 19, 2008 11:28 AM  | Hide replies

In this era Man become more clever through the use of technologies..One can find a players weak points through the use of technologies..lots of reserach, lots of game plan goes on to handle a player...But in Don's era such things didnt happened.Sachin is the player who played both version of the game. And the world should understood that its really tough.
DON PLAYED ONLY TEST CRICKET.SO HE PUT ALL HIS CONCENTRATION IN THE TEST VERSION ONLY. I BELIEVE THAT ITS IMPOSSIBLE IN THIS ERA TO MAKE SUCH AVERAGE WHAT DON DID AGO...

Its quite impossible in this era, to make an average of above 70 playing so many matches and making runs above 10k in both version of the game.

Agreed Sachin is batsman whom the young batsman watched on hours and hours to learn batting. The bowlers and coaches across the world watched him endlessly to find some gap in his batting at different stages of his innings, working out on possiblities of getting him out. There were talk amongst Umpires on how his head is so still while playing?
