Ricky Ponting has better average of 58 over Sachin's 54. He is most successful captain, whereas Sachin was a failure. Captaining and batting at the same time needs highest degree of concentration. Ricky is the BEST. Sachin is just scoring runs - most of the time, India loosing the matches...

there is a player Mike hussy who has an average of 70, so if you think only average tells you to choose the best, then Hussy should be a better player than Ponting ....Dear its the player who plays for long and over period of time his average is better....I will definitely see once ponting also would have played 150 Tests and then jus chek his average..

Yet another meaningless meandering on this forum. Does it really matter to anyone whether Sachin is the best or not? It is all a matter of personal opinion.
Number of hundreds, number of Tests etc does not really count to judge a player. Was Sobers not a great player? Same holds good for Viv Richards. Who can forget Kallicharan? Someone who plays so long will always hold the records.Gavaskar and Kapil are examples. But don't we remember Bedi, Chandra and Prasanna? Wadekar was the first captain who led India to victory in West Indies (first time we ever beat them) and in England - both in 1971. The great little master Vishy was a true class apart. We are yet to get anyone close to Eknath Solkar to field at short-leg.
Had TV and media coverage been so good in the past, then we will be celebrating all of the legends of yesteryear..

I see a few guys talking about Lara and Ponting. I am a big fan of all three. I am not arguing Sachin is better, but want to make sure that people understand how great an achievement this is. Sachin played more matches than Lara: Sachin actually has better average than Lara. Ponting does have the best average and he will break the test record soon. In ODI's Sachin has the best average of this group. All 3 of these are really great players, worrying who is better is neither easy nor productive. 2. Sachin is getting more chances: Look at this record. This guy earned his place in the team. Today's 88 proved that he is still the mainstay of Indian batting order. No one can argue that we have 5 better batsmen today than Sachin Tendulkar, even with his allegedly dimished skills. When we do have 5 batsmen better than him, he can leave. Finally, he is the only batsman to hold most test runs, most test centuries, most ODI runs and most ODI centuries records simultaneously. No one comes close to that ever.
Congrates Sachin for making us proud and for making us a nation (though making us a nation is for time being) People compare Ponting with Sachin but i don't think it is fair because sachin rocks see the analysis.
during 1989-2003 world is having class bowlers ( wasim,waquar,imran,aquib,shane warne,allan donald, develliers, mcgrath,shoib akhtar, walsh,bishop,Mcdarmott,hadlee,muthaiaah vass,) and sachin rocked during 1989-2003.but Ponting who starded his international career in 1997- 1998 was no where in the scenerio of great cricket batsman (which shows how great ponting is....LoL) Ponting came in the focus ( remember Ponting scored his 60-65% runs and centuries after 2003) when all the world class bowler get retired or on down fall in their career(e.g shoaib akhtar)
now again when world is on the way of getting some class bowler (Ishant,Flintoff,Panesar....)Ponting again is copping with runs ( remember he is not injured so he is not talented as lara and sachin)
after 2003 sachin faces lot of injuries which definetly affected his game (but still in that period his average is more than 48)
But now we hope so that he will not get injured for 6 years more and show the world , what he is born for ( Perhaps sachin will never be Don and rememberd the Only batsman who is very next to Don )

What is the use of records? We didn't win a world cup in his whole career. Until recently we never won a series outside India. Personally it may be great to score a million runs, but what is the use? No doubt Sachin is a great batsman..I dont care about records..

In 2008 itself we have won oneday triseries in Australia. We won test series in England in 2007 . In both Sachins performance was outstanding. To win matches teams performance is needed. He earns crores what is the problem. No body is stopping you or anybody earning crores.

tell me one name from international cricket player who single handed took his team to final and took the world cup. sachin is a batsman he needs the support of bowlers to make india win ( 356 in final of 2003 world cup is the fault of baulers not of sachin) see when he get the support of quality bowlers (Ishant, praveen,RP) he became the architect of winning tri series finals in australia
Congrats to Sachin and hope he bags some more records before he retires... Indians should be proud of his achievement. In no sport is an Indian player such highly recognized and for all the cricket fans this should be one of the ultimate moments! There are so many matches where Sachin won single-handedly and nobody can say a word against him. Even today when theres no Sachin in the team , watching cricket is not as interesting as it would be! Its Our Sachin who has created a record and shame on Indians! You always try and divide people... For once in your life be proud of a fellow Indian and don\'t try to find faults.... Sachin please play till you can as fans like me still continue to watch cricket only because of you! You make us proud ! May God give you the strength to play and achieve more laurels!!!

Ye lo .. who all r saying Sachin is Not a good batsman/ lara is better/ he plays for record... saalon kabhi jindagi main bat pakde ho ... Lee Akram ka ball aayega samne se to phat ke haat main aa jayegi .. chale aaye baaten banane ... ghar main kyun baithe ho itna kuch pata hai to y dont u join indian cricket team?
