Essence of The D/L rule
by pcu on Nov 22, 2008 04:41 AM

Whether D/L rule is there or not the team batting has the definite advantage as it knows the score to win the match. So do not blame the rule. The rule is based on the assumption that in general teams will accelerate during the last 10 overs. This acceleration in the scoring rate depends on wickets in hand during that time. Another thing is the team batting second has always advantage because they know the score (what the team bats first scored). Also now they know how much they need to win under the D/L rule. I think this is the one thing the rule makers didnot take into account. The team batting second has always can have the table which shows how many runs they need (depending on wickets in hand). To make it even if somehow the team batting second did not have that table then it will make things even (this is because the rule makers never taken this into account).

Continue Next Day

If more that 25 over has been played by each team and math has crossed 70 overs in total, then it should be continued next day if there is a bad light. Orelse should be declared draw or dropped. D/L is very unfair method to declare

Sorry, there is no such thing as a reserve day. Also the logistics of having one more day is pretty terrible. The concept of reserve day comes in only during later stages of the World Cup. D/L may not be perfect, but it is a definite improvement on older methods, and we can have it until a good enough replacement comes through.

Lee is already blaming food poisoning
by kiran kumar on Nov 21, 2008 08:10 PM

Sore loser Brett Lee is blaming Indian food for his under performance. So, I guess Umpires did the right job by sticking to the rule book. Else they would have given a chance to Swann/Anderson to say that they did not had enough time for lunch.

D/L method
by indira on Nov 21, 2008 05:40 PM  | Hide replies

It is unfair to decide a match on D/L method. It is based on assumption and it is ridiculous. It always favours the team batting second because they know what score they should get to be declared as the winner. ICC should make it mandatory that if flood lights are available then they should be used even in a day match. Yesterday the match could have started at the right time or prolonged after the scheduled closing time with the lights on. We could have had a full match. This would have avoided lot of ill feelings among the teams.

India too suffered many times. No one was questioning DL method. When they suffer then every thing goes different.

KP's comment
by suryanarayanan ramesh on Nov 21, 2008 01:48 PM  | Hide replies

It's really true comments made by Kevin Pietersen regarding lighting rules & regulations. As rightly said by him, to save the cricket in the interest of the public, the Icc can formulate a rule stating that, in a day match if the light start fading out, on Mutual understanding in the interest of the game, the authorities could switch-on the ground lights, even though the rule says that lights can't be used for Day matches, but as special case, v can goahead by keeping the game & the public in the mind, since going by the present method.

Since one team feels that they can win the match & other team feel that their pressure is taken-off.

To avoid unnecessary bitterliness among the teams & the captains, it's high time the concerned authorities should act immediately.

But India won finally because of Dhoni's cleverness & well judged calculation in event of light falling shows that, he is a very calculated captain by knowing the ideas of the game.

cleverness is good for any captain.... but i am little scared that dhoni might end up becoming a ricky ponting... mind you all he even appealed in the last tour a grounded catch and when asked , he said he moved away his eyes and was not aware... DHONI, take things seriously....

If you are going to lose 45 minutes of play at the start AND not reduce the lunch break AND know that the light fades at known time in the evening AND you are not to use the floodlights, THEN the logical thing to do would be to reduce it to a 43 - 44 over game. If the umpires and the match referee are not capable of this simple reasoning and decision making, then they ought to be taken to task and lose their pay for that game. Talk about being stupid and incompetent.

Boss according to ICC rules if u lost more than 1 hr of play then Lunch can be reduced to a min of 10 mins. but if it is lesser than 60 mins it can onlly be reduced by max 15 mins.

and i feel that in such conditions the match must be day nite.

Its a game, it cant be adjusted with need of one team. That is what toss matters. Someone will suffer. No one can do any thing. Tell me player are playing there for 4/5 hours in innings and you will give them lunch break of 10 mnts of 15 mnts? Its not advisable. If any thing can be done then rematch can be done on different place of match can be called off.

KP must accept that they were not able to put-up good score against India and Indians easily barged ahead on Duckworh-lewis of them even after loosing 5 wickets. Had they put-up score of 275 plus then it would have been difficult for India to go ahead of England. So he shoud stop giving unnecessary excuses now. All playing conditions are discussed before start of series not in between.

Use of Common Sense
by Ashish Kumar on Nov 20, 2008 08:43 PM  | Hide replies

The commonsense decision would have been to ask India to bat after winning the toss. KP must have realised that at the end of the game. Dhoni is a street smart fellow. Reminds one of Javed Miandad.

for a change accept something which makes merrit...

typical indian response...never argue to the point.
When someone points out your mistake ignore that and try to divert and point some other irrevelent shortcoming

Whether he made the right decisions or not thats another story

But why in first place stage a day match at venues like this up further north at this time of the year? ....further you go north ..further the days would be shorter...and Guwahti...surely will not be different

the organisers need a crash course of geography

KP,

The most common sense would be to use brain in such conditions where there is a possibility of rain or bad light or wet pitch. You are Kid in World Cricket.
