It could be 3 down but Bowden didn't gave out to M.Clarke. Bad luck of India. If Hayden goes we can win.

good knock
by Palangtod on Nov 10, 2008 10:09 AM

it was indeed a captains knock by dhoni as well as by a new 'all rounder' bhajji. in think our bowlers are capable of claiming 10 wkts of aussies today.

godd luck to dhoni & co.

369 runs
by GM on Nov 10, 2008 09:31 AM  | Hide replies

aussies need 369 runs from 90 overs i.e. they have to score at a run rate of 4.1 which I think is not such a big deal. But yes, this is the fifth day and players must be exhausted.

but guys do you think India can pull through a win.Let's not talk about a draw match.

Captains
by A Singh on Nov 10, 2008 08:55 AM  | Hide replies

Captains are generally as good as their teams.
Throughout history, we find better teams winning. There are some exceptions though, when a weaker team has managed to win a series because of superior leadershp skills of the Captain.
Tow such cases come to mind.
1. In 1977-78 Australia under Bob Simpson defeated India, who were a much superior side than the Australians.
2. Pakistan under Imran Khan defeated India under Kapil Dev in 1987. Indian team was definitely better.
One is tempted to add India's 2001 victory over Australia in the same list, but that victory did not come because of any superior tactical move by the captain. It was rather a product of a couple of superlative performances that come once in a lifetime of players. Laxman never played an innings like his 281, and Harbhajan never took 32 wickets in a series; again.
All this talk about great captains therefore is rubbish. Mike Brearly was supposed to be a great captain, but could do nothing against asuperior Australian side in 1978-79, and lost the series 0-3.
Clive Lloyd, Steve Waugh and Saurav Ganguly were ordinary leaders, but Arjuna Ranatunga was not. He turned a very ordinary Srilankan side into a respected outfit.

test
Re: Captains
by test on Nov 10, 2008 09:31 AM
This is the most stupid stuff I have ever read.. just check the 1996 AUS team..U never heard of mcGrath, u never herard of ponting and there were lot of other players like stuart law but AUS still came in the finals and these same players were turned into match winners after the 1996 world cup..

check the initial matches of Gilchrist and he was a flop but later on he was groomed..this happens when ur captain has faith in u...

Take the example of this new spinnner krazz(whateer his name is)..he was failing but his captain still gave him chance and then he got wickets and this is a captains brain..if it was someone like Kumble he would have pulled him off and if it was dhoni he would have had faith in himm

so never undermine captains efforts

TAKE my words ,day ponting starts performing entire team will again perform..

Dinno who you are agreeing with.... if its Singh, then you are no doubt lending credence to the fact that Ganguly was only as good as the collection of individuals he got handed over by BCCI.....

Hmmmmmm.... kinda difficult to understand your joke in light of your agreement with Singh.... ;-)

in fact Ganguly always helped other team to win. He never played for India, He was getting some money from other teams so he always played so that India lose the match. But because of some miracle India won few matches depite Ganguly tried everything to lose the match.
Actually none of the Indian captain except Dhoni tried to win the match. All past Indian captain were playing to lose the match.
I'm sure this kind of comments will make some "special" people very happy.

So what's the verdict? All this talk about great captains is therefore rubbish or not?

Because Brearly, Waugh and Ganguly were ordinary leaders, Ranatunga too is sidelined as great captain, or not?

Make up your mind, instead of arguing either way.

Ponting should go.
by Samrat on Nov 10, 2008 08:34 AM  | Hide replies

Peter Roebuck has been Pontings biggest critic for sometime now. So it is not surprising to read his comments, but they are much easier to swallow than the criticism coming from the News Ltd papers from journalists who have no idea about the caper of Test cricket other than they used to dream about it as little boys.

However the criticism coming from people who admire his talents, the likes of Ian Chappell and Allan Border, are going to hurt him a great deal.

The whole team needs a clean out. Krezja has proven that.
Hayden, gone. Haddin, gone. Johnson, gone. Lee, gone. White, gone.

I would not be surpised to see Ponting step down either before or after the Ashes series. Its too soon for Clarke to be captain ... he'll end up like Kim Hughes if takes on the captaincy too soon.

I wonder how close they are to calling Shane Warne to come back. They may offer him the captaincy as a lure!

Good Captain??
by Samrat on Nov 10, 2008 08:31 AM  | Hide replies

I don't think Ponting is that great a captain as he is made out to be. Any captain in the world can win matches with the likes of McGrath, Warne and Gilly.

If a captain can win matches without them against quality team then only it proves how good the captain or the team is.

There was no Border Gavaskar last year my dear. It is only played in India. If you are talking about the series in Australia then it was just a test series, not border gavaskar. Get your facts right before blabbering.

You referring to the Sydney test apparently. Kindly explain which 13 players were involved in the last 3 Indians returning within a space of 6 balls to a rank non-specialist bowler Michael Clark?
