Harbhajan will feel the pressure now
by jv on Nov 05, 2008 03:05 PM  | Hide replies

Now Harbhajan is the senior most spinner of Indian team, so he will be expected to perform well. Harbhajan must take atleast 5 wickets in the next match. He can be a good all-rounder, even his batting is good.

But spectators won't

One has no doubt that Kumble was a good bowler, who did well over a long time for India. But the hard fact is that he is past his prime and should in fact have quit atleast a few tests before.

As rightly said, parting is a formality and nobody wants to say anything bad or wrong about anyone who is leaving. This does not glorify the leaver beyond what is his or her due.

In a couple of months, we would all have forgotten Kumble, as we have in the case of others like Kapil, Gavaskar, Vishwanath, Kirmani, Ravi Shastri etc.

In fact I would go on to say that if Harbhajan is given a break of a couple of years, and, in place of Kumble-Bhajji we can have the combination of Amit Mishra - Pragyan Ohja, it would do wonders to Team India. Bhajji is too hyped and less substance, as is the case with Yuvraj Singh. Both these guys should be kept away from the national team for atleast 2 years to make them mend their ways.

anil will be missed becoz he has carried the mantle of the indian bowling attack for 15 years. It's not an easy thing to do. Bhajji is close to getting 300 test wickets and if you think he is just hype and no substance then good luck to you. He is the lead spinner now and his best years lie ahead of him. His behaviour on the field is poor but nobody can question his talent.

Mr. Varun, I am well aware that Harbhajan has taken 299 wickets and is just one wicket away from claiming his 300th scalp, a creditable performance indeed.

But the sad fact is that in the last 3-4 years, he hasn't come out with match winning performances either at home or abroad even once in 4 or 5 tests. On the contrary his statements to the media and his on-field behaviour show an abrasiveness unbecoming of a cricketer who repeatedly vows to improve.

Further, we cannot keep singing praise of a cricketer who has been given 71 chances to prove himself, while sidelining apparently capable ones like Amit Mishra, Pragyan Ohja, Piyush Chawla, Chetan Nanda etc. for long. Now that Kumble is off, one or more of them needs to be given continuous and adequate exposure to see what they can contribute to Indian cricket.

Do you think it is logical and coherent to compare the greatest leg spinner India has ever produced with people like Ravi Shashtri and Syed Kirmani.

What makes you think that Anil Kumble's contributions will be forgotten in few months?

He is a great player like Kapil Dev and S.M.Gavaskar and Anil Kumble will not be forgotten.

Don't Forget Kumble is the by far highest Wicket taker for India .... and the third highest in all time , and only the second bowler to get 10 wickets in an innings....so don't compare him with Kirmani or Ravi shastri........... they are medicore player compare to Kumble........we Indian still respect a lot to Kapil and Gavaskar and kumble in next in that Elite list.......

selection of cricket team
by krishna moorthy on Nov 05, 2008 11:39 AM  | Hide replies

it is really surprised that vijay was taken in the team at the last minute. there are lots of players who are worth playing. team selction should not be biased and it should be purely on merit and not regionalism . another factor is when a player is selected by merit then he should be given a cahnce to place in all conditions and also for 10- to 20 tests then only one can judge. old players should be warned unless they perform they cannto be in the team. Seconldy performance needsto be measured like the who are opposition, the state of the match , state of the pitch ,situation etc should be see while assessing the players calibre. It is almost impossible for other countires to win test match in India irresptive of the bowler or captain . Austrlia won a series in 1974 and then in 2007.

great team has to win a series all the countires.

It is a surprise no doubt but we should also consider giving oppurtunities to newcomers who has done well in the recent past as well. India is a country of 1.2 billion and our team India shud not be an eleven which is always picked from a group of 14. If you do ur research u can see all the other three hopefulls listed of the likes of Jaffer, Akash Chopra and D Karthik has not done well in the recent past or maybe we can put it this way. They have not done enough to reclaim their spot. Their recent records wud prove that. Also we need to look at M Vijays recent exploits its nothing less than outstanding. So he got the call. Period. Lets wish him well.

Well. Why are you surprised? You mentioned a lot of players are available. Perhaps, you can give us some stats so we can compare them.

India needs an opening batsman and we have a few, including Jafar, Akash Chopra and Karthik.

Vijay is a new face and got selected 'cause, as someone pointed out he has done well in the india a team and has scored a hundread in his last match.

My thinking is Akahs chopra deserved a chance. Offcourse, you dont have to be a regionalist to conclude that.

Vijay, perhaps might do well and then it would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

Harbhajan the latest to join Indias best!
by sandeep kumar on Nov 05, 2008 09:54 AM  | Hide replies

Now that Kumble, warne as retired and with a record of 299 wickets, he's easily the worlds best spinner. Ajanta mensis will be tackled afer studying his action on laptops, and Murali's time is up. Vettori and panesar are dfensive bowlers at best. WI and SA have no spinners to speak of, while Krejza is a joke. India should be proud that
1.Worlds best batsman: Sachin
2.Worlds best keeper batsman: MSD
3. Worlds best spinner: Harbhajan
4.Best 20/20 player: Yuvraj
5.Best opening pair: Sehwag/gambir
6.Best young bowler:Ishant
7.Best bowler of reverse swing: Zaheer
and the most important: World 20/20 champs!
