IPL Franchise
by sara priya on May 12, 2008 03:53 PM  | Hide replies

Instead of Buying these Players and spending all the money. When Mother Teresa was offered her nobel prize money she begged that all rich people should look at the poorest of the poor people in India . Mahatma Gandhi would have asked these companies to adopt a village and develop countries economy. India would defnitly become a developed nation . Instead all these people are wasting their money by not doing any service to the country

Let them spend 50% of money what they have spent for IPL.

Great Analysis
by SANJEEV KUMAR on May 12, 2008 01:16 PM

Now, one can't hide behind slow run-rate, bad-fielding & expensive bowling. Great to see quantitative values, instead of non-stop chatter of qualititative/subjective opinions.

Which franchise owner is getting the best return on investment?
by BadriPrasad Nagoji on May 11, 2008 02:44 PM

What a waste of time for doing this analysis. These buying of players by these companies has an intention to make profit. They have taken calculated risk by investing in them. It is just like share market where some times A group shares do badly. Why don't just consider it as a game and watch it for pure fun.

Elite players

The term elite players will have a natural death since the value of elite player is not matching with their performance.Classical examples are SRT,SG,MSD.

one thing that this t20 has done is throw up lot of new talents and the elite players need to be looking over their shoulders from now on. look at gony, asnodkar, dinda etc... In business terms rajasthan royals are the smart ones

MVPI & PVI

The player payout should not only considered. The franchise also earns money through ticket sales, sponsership, momerabilia etc. which can't be calculated summarily.
One way to account that can be to calculate the total payout from the franchise.
Payout for Franchise ownership Payout to players Ground rent & other groud related expenses etc.
From the earning reduce the all the expenses
Then the amount ( looks like the amount will be negetive for this season) is to be considered as profit/ loss for franchise. That can then be compared with the player payout.

The franchises are not paying the BCCI at a time. The auctioned sum is to be paid over a period of 10 yrs. The franchises have plenty of time to rectify their mistakes, if any.

How about a popularity index
by John Smith on May 10, 2008 11:55 AM

Irrespective of performance, people like Dhoni,Yuvraj can pull in crowd. That is really what they bring to the table and ofcourse increased viewership is what really earns more money for the franchisees. Not the 1.2M they get as the prize money

Perfect analysis. Except for one team. Chennai.
Chennai's Dhoni has performed match winning innings and had led them very well, despite having a weak team after the Aussies left. Murali is doing his part, part can deliver better i agree with you. The rest are correct

Awsome stats
by PB on May 10, 2008 10:27 AM

Well everything has its own flaws but i still agree with the above stats, its simply awsome, here again it test yr management skills, hats off, atleast frm next auction, the team owners would give some sense before putting a price tag and selecting the combination of foreign and Desi players.

inane statistics
by kishore k. p. on May 09, 2008 10:54 PM  | Hide replies

I understand statistics is useful to speculate in certain areas (like retailing, consumer consumption, product structuring etc). In sports. I watch sports in America (NFL and NBA mostly), who have well organized teams and offcourse mundane statistics. However, I seriously doubt if players are selected based on the individual performances statistics. They certainly are selected with perf, but I guess stats dont play that much role. This is sports guys, how a player plays sometimes is so dependent on otehr players. Especially in cricket, with so many formats, and batting and bowling positions, its all the more nonsense to keep on going with these statistics.

I feel that the ppl who are doing it are certainly brainy guys, but are trying to do some kind of job justification or kind of want to confuse the public or the management teams. A player is good or bad in a situation thats it. How consistent he is is what matters. All you have to see is how he scored or bowled and if there were any notable circumstances. I guess any coach could do that. Then why all these statistics...I guess its their hobby and teams have enough money to blow on all these stuff..

Anyway, I might be wrong in one aspect, these probably would be needed for marketing guys for pricing players for advertisements..

You are not wrong. Some people have to justify their worth and they try to waste others time. will they consider a player who did good in fielding or players like ganguly or Dravid who contributed to others run outs. Cricket is a team sport and we do not need to study wasteful article / comparison to know who is a value for money and who is not.
