Toughest Challenge
by Sunny on Mar 15, 2008 02:37 PM  | Hide replies

Steve Wagh was scared of Ganguly as Dada has been batting with huge freedom in those days and most noticeable feature about his cricket has been his aggressivenes and Royal walk. Even Bradman didn%u2019t faced the dreadful bowlers like Ganguly faced so Dada is best ever cricketer.
Toughest challenge lies ahead for youngesters to take Dada%u2019s place, even 5 young batsman together cannot fill Ganguly%u2019s spot so at last selection committee will have no option other than to again select Dada for one day and then make him captain both for test and one day. Shahrukh also bought Calcutta team only because he knew that Ganguly is only the original match winner and others r playing only for securing their place in team, Shahrukh didn%u2019t took Dhoni and Yuvraj in his team because of Ganguly so Shahrukh sacrificed both Dhoni and Yuvraj as he cannot dream of his team without Ganguly. All Indian players know very well that Ganguly is best batsman in world. Even Ponting was so much of happy for Dada%u2019s exclusion that he openly said that he is surprised for Dada%u2019s omission and then from there Ponting took Indian team very lightly without Ganguly and so India won tri-series so it was Dada only who won tri-series for India in Australia. Ponting thought that Indian team is nothing without Ganguly and so he didn%u2019t took the matches serious and ultimately lost from India.

Sorry,

Ganguly's place has already been filled by player like rohit sharma, Robin uttahppa, Suresh Raina

I m saying that bcoz these players are good fielders also as onday cricket is not all about being a good batsman, he must be a good fielder & a good runner between the wkts

Unfortunatly Ganguly is weakest in that department although he is a good batsman but you can't say that nobody can fill his place he is not a that kind of player as you are thinking

Ganguly was a great cricketer but mind you, was....is the word. Secondly, the idiotic steve Waugh disliked saurav and was scared of him not because of his batting. Bradman did not face the guile and the pace which these people have here. But the fact that he faced them without helmet is what people should see. Going by your judgement its not saurav but Sachin is the one who is the best there is was and ever will be. And as far as your second para is concerned sunny, start to wake up and understand Dada is history.....

We need Ganguly's support
by Sunny on Mar 15, 2008 02:36 PM  | Hide replies

If u all r looking for a clue to why Ganguly is best batsman world have ever produced then it is here, Ganguly sustain his spectacular runs both in Test and one day cricket since his debut with highest number of sixes in one day, his eyes speak of a tiger who destroyed Macgrath, Akram, Waqar, Sohaib, Lee and Warne with utmost ease and also he is a combination of composure and technique. Other players gets charged up just with presence of Ganguly, Dhoni didn%u2019t select Ganguly as he was sure that Ganguly become captain of one day after tri-series. Ganguly marked new height in his career when he single-handedly won matches for India from 1998-2001 while others struggled. Ganguly supported Yuvraj Singh and Bhajji in 2002 as selection comitte almost throwed them out, just imagine if Bhajji was not there in Australia for Perth test and tri-series final then India would have lost Perth test and tri-series finals as he bowled some tight and wicket taking overs. In one days against Sri Lanka if Yuvraj didn%u2019t score 76 then India would have been out of triagular series, so indirectly because of Ganguly India won tri-series as both Yuvraj and Bhajji r in team because of Ganguly, Indian Board should award Ganguly for his effforts and give him captaincy for test and one day. Pathan is in team because of Ganguly and Pathan was man of the match in Perth test, so Ganguly is a kingmaker and full credit must be given to Ganguly for India%u2019s win in Australia both in test and oneday.

Of all the bowlers you mentioned, I have not seen him once dominate the list of bowlers which you gave. Though out his career so far, there are hardly single digit matches which saurav won for India single handedly. Get your facts straight bhajji was not there in perth test. Just because saurav got yuvraj and bajji back, does not mean, he is the greatest captain and cricketer. In such cases, then Azhar is the greatest cricketing captain for all eternity for he produced sachin. Ganguly is the only person Indian team does not want...

Dravid in playing eleven has never been a doubt. Mind you it was he who got India the victory in perth test with 93. His position in ODI has been destabilised not because of form but vebgy;s politics and policy. Sachin failed to score in 8 ODI in Australia with 101 runs in 8 innings. Scored only in the last 2. He is a great player and not a case to be left out. If because of his 8 failures had he been droped like how DRAVID was droped on account of 5 failures aganist PAK, India would have lost the services of yet another consistent batsmen. Different treatment for different States by Mumbaites!!!!!!

Madam,

Let us not blame a particualr state or region for a player's inclusion or exclusion. After all, four other wisemen representing their respective Zones, the Coach and the Captain are also involved in selection of a Team. It was true that established players like Dravid and Saurav Ganguly were excluded from ODIs (Saurav was excluded from tests also for that matter) for non cricketing reasons. I am personally against attribting any blame to a particular state or region.

But Not a Match Winning Knock.
by Ramanjaneyulu Gandluri on Mar 15, 2008 01:03 PM  | Hide replies

Most of the Dravid's Innings are match winning knocks - whether in tests or ODIs.The exception here is that his knock did not bring victory to his Team. Is he trying to emulate others? I sincerely hope not. I am more interested in the Team winning, but not in his centuries. Because, Rahul is not after his personal milestones. That is what makes Dravid so spcial in our hearts.

Dear Mr. All Right,

Please read what Mr. Ravi Boppudi has posted, for knowing what match winning innings are. I am not interested in givig definations of the terminologies. But some of these examples should make things amply clear:
His 93 in the Perth test; his half centuries in each of the innings against West Indies at Jamaica in the India's last tour to WI; his knock in Adelaide in 2003 againt Aussies etc to name a few.

Still not defined what is "match winning".. :-)
That is the point I am trying to drive home.
- Is a score beyong a certain threshold called match winning?
- Is the failure of all others in the team called match winning?
- Is the utter failure of all others (so utter that even your sensational knock doesn't win the match) called match losing?
- Is your batting called pathetic if your bowlers are giving away 8 runs an over and not taking wickets (a la WC 2003 final style)?
- Is hitting fours and sixes called match winning?
- Is dextrously rotating the strike with 1s and 3s called match winning?
- Is playing the fast bowlers well called match winning?
- Is playing spinners with aplomb called match winning?
- Is staying throughout the innings called as match winning?
- Is hitting the winning run called as match winning?

...
Come on ALL you posters (and self proclaimed experts).. Cricket is a TEAM game.
T - Together
E - Everyone
A - Achieves
M - More.

End of story!

Your question should be directed to you. Why do you post such comments. Take out the leaves of record book. It is Dravid next to Gundappa Vishwanath who has the success story for contribution to India's success more than any other Indian batsmen including Tendulkar

Ramanjaneyulu garu,

I completely agree with you that this knock isn't a match winning knock. Hopefully, he comes back stronger. But cramping after just playing 100 balls or so points clearly towards dwindling fitness as a result of aging.

Hey truthan, don't go so overboard. Watch your words. Can't believe that people can forget Rahul Dravid, The Wall's contributions so easily. Rahul Dravid is as responsible as Indian cricket watching public, because of his style of play, for this kind of short lived memory. Your post confirms that you don't remember his 109* against West Indies in 2002 when India were chasing. Mind you, The Wall came in to bat at an early stage after keeping wickets for 50 overs. That is just one of his centuries that was very important in winning that match. You may not acknowledge his contributions but misquoting his contributions shows you in a poor light and you run the risk of losing your credibility. Your reluctance to acknowledge his contribution wouldn't make an iota of a difference to Rahul Dravid's record in Indian wins both in ODIs and Test Matches. One more interesting point. When you filter his contributions by way of scores that are either 30 or above, India has won in 78 matches and Rahul Dravid's average is a whopping 85 with 8 centuries and 47 fifties. He is one of those unlucky cricketers who remained unbeaten on numerous occasions before reaching a century or even a half century purely because of the match coming to a close. We need not have too many doubts that by logical extension of those big 50s and 30s and 40s he would have easily made more 100s and 50s. I'm hell bent on noting whether his 30s, 40s and 50s were instrumental in steering the team to victory or not.
