Undoubuted it is the greatest thing ever happend in Indain Sports. But one thing I do not understand. Except the hoopla surounding cricket, I have not seen Indian team making any strides in team games where the sport is played by more than dozen nations seriously. May I add in the last 20 years, other wise viewers will punce on me mentioning the 1980 Hockey Worls Cup.
There are moments of indiviual brillance in winning some medals in olympics and other tournments. One wins olympic gold in shooting some wins england open, badminton
I believe the same fate is not going to happen to India

Viswanathan Anand's feats in chess,Prakash Padukon's victory in All England Championship,Paes and Bhoopathi's 10 grand slam victories are some woth mentioning.
I was 8 and a bit. Growing up in the back of the beyond. My role model was the only paanwala- he was also a fast bowler- at the bus stop of the village township.I had heard the commentary of that famous Indian victory that year at Berbice in March of that year- mostly due to the 72 off 38 balls by Kapil and of course Gavaskar's 90 off 117. But then to a young mind England was still epitome of cricket. I was delighted when we made it to the semis. But my fear was that we were playing England. It was foregone for me that we won't win the semis. I didn't listen to the commentary. The next morning I rushed to the paanwala to know about the result. And when he told me that we have beaten England by 6 wickets, somehow I knew that we will win the Cup. West Indies was beatable. We had already beaten the mighty West indies twice in that year. And the 5 test match series earlier that year was rather close despite the 0-2 loss.We had turned in some good batting and bowling performances in that series against the Windies. There was no TV at home. I remember Patil's drive on his knee- and off Roberts I think- Sandhu's wicket and that remarkable catch by Kapil. Stolen moments from the only TV in town that was 3 kilometers from my house. We were jittery during the rearguard action of marshal and Dujon. My dad, my bro and I knew we had won the cup when Dujon was blowled. I finally remember telling my mom who was sleeping that we had won the Cup. Cricket in India has come a long way since then!

I was 10 year old & was never watching cricket .My interest arised only after India won this World cup & again they repeated this in 1985 (Benson & Hadges Cup) in Australia by beating Pakistan in Final . Remeber AUDI Car of Ravi Shastri.
I left watching Full matches after Miandad hit Six off last ball of Austral-Asia cup Final at Sharjah.
The new talent of players & BCCI's huge money is only because of the 1983 World Cup. This victory gave the new opening in the Marketing Field as well as many Indian parents thinking of asking thier children to take sports as one of the profession
BCCI is doing just the right thing by honoring KAPIL'S DEVILS.After world cup victory cricket became religion in INDIA.Today what ever extravaganza & huge money etc. which we are seeing in cricket definitely has its roots some where or other in 83 world cup triumph.KAPIL'S DEVILS must be honored & BCCI is doing just the right thing so hatts off to BCCI also. abhay3655@rediffmail.com
BCCI giving 25 lakhs to each of the player is extravagant as they are all millionaires and does not need any financial support. Instead if BCCI arranges to start academy for facilitating youngsters who are poor to perform better or start a academy for upliftment of sports or start a sports university will help large memebers isntead of making rich richer.

25 lakhs is peanuts they should be paid more dhoni earns 50 crore a year today kapil didnt have a chance to earn even 1 crore a year....
of course bcci should start sports academy for cricket, and also for archery, hockey, etc. to give sports a boost in the country

They are worth every pie and I feel 25lakhs is a pittance that they are getting. If today BCCI is rich,Azhar &co , Saurav Sachin,Sehwag Dhoni&co are making millions its because of LORDS OF 83.This team for the the fits time in the annals of INDIAN HISTORY brought belief into collective conscience of Indian Consciousness and Brought and KEpt INDIA together in spite of Third grade politicians, corrupt bureaucracy , apathetic citizens,THIS 1983 win gave "HOPE" to believe in Future to all Indians and careers to 3rd grade cricketers, commentators, politicians [now in BCCI], AND last but not the least so many companies and advertisers are taking their Products and services to every jook and corner of the cricketing world. So considering the consideration Vijay Merchant told Vijay hazare 1983 LOrds are the and will be THE BEST.Hats of to each and every one of 1983 world cup team and you should have been a teenager [which your truly was] on 25.6.1983 to witness the euphoria that night on Indian[more so Secunderabad roads].It was unbelievable and cannot be put in words."There was magic in the air and everyone silently coined the word MERA BHARAT MAHAAN" and this legacy continues.KOI SHAQUE
