How can he, as he has not opened batting in this innings. perhaps this rediff writer thought he is the 12th man, carrying drinks, gloves, bats etc, to the team, hence carrying bat expression..

true. only openers carry the bat. rediff is confusing readers telling remained unbeaten and lost out partners as equivalent to carrying the bat.
From last 12 years westindies cricket is going downfall day by day. Once they were the kig of cricket.. They given such good players to cricket that no body can ful fill.
if i m not mistaken, the term carrying the bat is used only if a batsman came out to open the innings and has remained not out till the end of the inning. though chanderpaul was not out in the inning, he did not open, so his feat was not carrying the bat.

I guess just as we are modifying English Language, the the traditional Cricketing Terminologies are also being tampered with by the scribes.
A case in point about English is the usage of 'ANYWAYS' God knows who started it, it has spread like wild fire in India.

Exactly summit, one has to carry the bat through the entire innings and should remain unbeaten to use that phrase. anyway its a great achivement for a great player. triple cheers to him.
