How many times?? Stop making money out of same old cup!!
by pavan prasad on Jun 04, 2008 09:30 AM  | Hide replies

Hope there are more world cup wins..its just because we have won only once that these very people come every second year or whenever there is a world cup or big cricketing event around, asking for felicitation and cash. When every tom dick n harry is getting some mulah out of cricket these ppl also want to rake in some while the sun shines. We have celebrated this world cup win so many times and given this team of 11 - performance or none (I wonder Gavaskar's contribution in the world cup matches of '83)that it has started to feel a big bore!
Wonder if Australia celebrate there world cup wins that way??Time to bring a new cup while the oldies maintain some dignity..rather than asking for attention (and money) every now and then in the name of some event, jubilee or wotever..We had won quite a few world cups for hockey..do we celebrate jubilees for each of them?? National sport, eh?

celebration
by Piyush Thakorbhai Panchal on Jun 04, 2008 07:37 AM  | Hide replies

ther should be further celebrations for first victory over every test playing country, in india and abroad. then for past captains, then for highest scorer, wicket taker, fielder catches, and many more so that money can be given to all these cash rich cricketers. officials and all past cricketers can enjoy trips at cost of board. this is good. then after 25 years there can be a joint celebration for 83 world cup winners and recent T20 winners in south africa. then celebrate the passing away of these heros because by then many could be up above the world so high. there is so much money to spend. mind it.

He's great man than any other captain India has produced(not a comparision)...during 80's with that kind of strike rate, not much modern techniques & resources, good fielding(which need to be admired especially in Indian team that too during 80's), & ofcourse the bowling...who has the skills with leadership qualities...forget about all these ...who has got the worldcup for India...other than GREAT KAPIL...our hero... & last but not least..they were not paid like these...not much money thru advertisements,.they worked hard to get & reach those kind of miles...it has to be SALUTED...than any other Indian players...(its the fact..not a comparision)...today..you play one cricket match score a 100(doesn't need to know bowling...& not much with fielding)...but still u will be a hero on/off the field (for nothing)...so being greatest during that period (80's) is greatest EVER....

where is the spectators ? Out of Olympics, we should shut our mouth upto next olympic regarding politics mixed Hockey. You please find a good sponser for Hockey. Hockey becomes its charm towards called as our national game. If analize, the Hockey is belongs to sikh only whether the Federation Head or Captain of the team. It is all over after Dhanraj Pillai. do you know how much humiliation he faced ? I want to know the present status of our hockey captain who won the World Cup ? Has he houred ? Humiliation is the other name of hockey. Don't call it as our national sport.

We should start living in the present and make sure we will the next world cup. Instead of that we are trying to live in the past and celebrate the world cup win quarter century ago. How many time s are we going to say the team in 1983 and 9185 was the best one, and how many tines are we going to watch the matches on star sports??Wake up live in the present, Past is Past. It seems the winning the world in 1983 was a dream and whole of BCCI does want to get out of this dream. Don't get me wrong. I am as proud as anybody for winning th world cup, but it's time we get another another world cup for celebration..

its not a celebration organised for us by BCCI ?
It's a celebration for the team who played in that particular match by BCCI. I dont think anything is wrong in that..let the guys who brought the cup celebrate..and truely no one even since got the cup..so they have become legends now..this is legend's celebration..this is fact.
Nobody has asked us to watch or keep in track about how they are doing this celebration..this is just news.
Why we are not able to win any more cups..thats another story..so dont combine both the stories..
would be like combining sholay with any of the SK movies now !

Why they don't celebrate India's Hockey victory (before my grandpa was born).

India is really funny country.
(But Cricket Politicians know how to make money)

Let's start celebrating Chankya's Artha Sasthra, Sri Ram's crossing of Ram Sethu...

Nobody can equal we Indians in talking about past past past past glory.

America is eyeing on Mars.
We are still talking about the one and only 1983 world cup.

We care our foot about Olympics, etc.
Do you think our India is going to improve?

Mr.Balaji, Get over it. What is your problem in celebrating 25 years of the only World Cup triumph India has ever had? Till then no one took India seriously in ODIs but that WC changed Indian cricket forever. It is a historic event and needs to be celebrated. Not only that, every team member should be given a cash award. If you have a problem with that, shove it up. Dont keep complaining about everything that happens around you. If you want to reach Mars, go ahead, no one is stopping you.

Your point is correct. But it is not planned by the indian government and only by the BCCI. If the hockey federation wanted to celebrate, let them do it and you support it. As an indian i will also support. So don't just mumble if you don't want to praise it.

Although people may sensibly argue that there is little logic for celebrating something which took place a quarter of a century ago, I would call that this is a good move. After all, our heroes who did us proud by lifting the World Cup are now getting some attention. Players like Sachin, Kumble, Rahul Dravid etc amassed huge amount of match-fees and endorsements without ever winning the World Cup, whereas those like Kapil, Mohinder Amarnath, Jashpal Sharma or Sandip Patil - who actually became the world champions never received that kind of adulation. At least that is rectified now to some extent.

Haramohan, It's unfair that Sachin, Dravid and the likes get the wrong treatment from a huge set of fans for not winning a world cup. Unfortunately, people always forget that it's a team effort that wins trophies. In 83, we had an excellent mix in the team. Although we've had great batsmen in our team in the world cups to follow, we should concede that we never had a good set of bowlers. People often forget that Sachin single handedly took India to the W/C final in SAF in 2003. In 87, even the mighty West Indies could not make to the semifinals, nor the Aussies in 92. Did that make them bad teams? I am not a great fan of Sachin, but he surely commands respect based on his contributions. The problem lies in the hero-worship by us Indians. Looking at the talent of players like Sachin, we want him to score a century everytime he comes to bat.
A couple more things you can cross check on cricinfo..Top run getters (Indian batsmen):

92 World cup : (Azhar 332, Sachin 283, Kapil 161)
96 World Cup : (Sachin 523, Sidhu 178, Kambli 176)..Please note the difference in runs here
99 World cup: (Dravid 461, Ganguly 379, Jadeja 285, Sachin 253)..
03 World Cup: (Sachin 673, Ganguly 465, Dravid: 318).
It's only the 07 world cup that was a debacle for the BIG names. I dont have anything to take away from the 83 world cup winning team, but Players like Sachin, Darvid, Kumble or Ganguly dont deserve the crap they are often given because they could not get home a world cup.

Ray, learn to appreciate. Whether its Kapil, Sunil, Sachin, Rahul or Saurav, all of them have contributed in their own way and have made us proud. The current crop of players make more money because the game is commercialised. Ricky Ponting earns more than what Don Bradman earned, Richards and company was paid far less than what the current West Indies team members are paid. Does that mean Bradman or Richards did not receive the adulation they deserved? You are wrong Ray.

Definitely Kapil and team did very well to get the world cup and they deserver appreciation.
But there were manythings done by Kumble, Ganguly and Dravid which Kapil as a captain could not do. Winning Test series outside India and winning in Australia and South Africa. We must appreciate that as well. World cup is not the only thing to measure. In such case we dont have any heroes other than the 16 people who are part of 83 world cup.

What a crap!

Nothing to be proud about celebrating an achievement accomplishment quarter a century ago!-Arguably a flash in the pan!

On the contrary it is time for introspection that despite the coffers overflowing a nation of 1 billion cricket crazy people could not produce a convincing world beater on a regular basis.

Compare it with a tiny nation like New Zealand whose total population is not more than 2.5 million i.e equivalent to a tiny suburb of a city like Bombay. Yet they can convincingly beat India.

Wake up and stop resting on your laurels and stop living in past glories!

Kabeer, you must be either kidding or you don't seem to understand the nuances of cricket to label 1983 World Cup win as a flash in the pan. The World Cup 1983 went for close to a month. I am surprised that your "flash in the pan" was for a period of a month??? India beat West Indies not once, but twice. Beat Australia once, beat England once. And you call that a flash in the pan. The greatest ever innings of 175 n.o. by Kapil Dev was not played in a flash. Nor did Mohinder Amarnath pick up 3 wickets in a flash in the finals. Even India has beaten the number one team Australia in Australia two consecutive times to win the Tri series. But you seem to remember only the Indian defeats. Want more??? Email me on unfriendly.gy@rediffmail.com. I will show you a positive outlook towards life.

Agreed and that's complacency at its best! Indians started following cricket not because they're fond of the game but because Pakistan played cricket too and they loved to see India defeating Pakistan every time the two teams clashed.

If we really were a cricket loving country, ICL too should have been as much a success as IPL (not just in commercial terms but also in publicity among common man, media attention, etc).

and these clowns are celebrating their world cup victory way back in 83? what a shame!!!

It is not because we won the World Cup. It was major turning point for the Indian Cricket. Prior 1983 we never came even closer to beating of any team in the World. 1983 changed that notion of India cannot play one day games. We learnt how to play one day matches with World cup.

Prior to 1983 tournament we went to Pakistan and West Indies. Pakistan was disastrous because of Cheating by Imran Khan and Company. Nobody knew at the time Pakistan tampering the ball with Screwdriver. After that low KapilDev took captaincy. Although we lost to West Indies did not bother much. In this situation Indians winning the World cup was greatest feet. It paved the way for the next generation
