new opening combination for 4th Test

If dada bats in opening slot, then at least Laxman and Dravid would be able to build onto that.

Lets not get carried away

Congratulations to the Indian team on an outstanding performance against Australia. Indian batsmen showed good grit and bowlers bowled to a plan.
Beyond this we or the media should not get carried away by posting or shouting big headlines like - "Team India has arrived". "We can be the best test team".

We need to look introspectively as a whole the Indian team performance. Granted they were short of match practice for first test and they lost. But seriously there should be no excuses for losing the second test. If Ganguly and Dravid got wrong decisions, the others could have done better. The team combination was in correct until this test because we kept accomodating Yuvraj Singh and he is not a worthy test player outside of India. Look at his performance before in the caribbean for example. We need to start selecting a team based on conditions. Horses for courses. Just like we choose bowlers based on conditions, we should select batsmen as well.
We have to start winning series outside of India on regular basis to be counted as a top team. We still need to beat South Africa, Australia on their home soils. What Australia achieved - 16 straight wins, we can only dream about it yet. They have been consistent and wonderful. We need to acknowledge their performance and feel proud of what we did to stop their juggernaut and take that as a good lesson and stay grounded and perform day in, day out. Performance and team balance should be the criteria for selecting a team.

Australia v India is the Test rivalry of the decade. England popped up spectacularly in 2005 but only India have been able to match, fight and beat Australia over a sustained period.
In the last 10 years, India and australia have met 21 times in Test cricket; the numbers now stand at 10-8 in Australia's favour. In the corresponding period Australia's record stands at 27-9 against England, 12-2 against Pakistan, 15-4 against South Africa and 9-1 against Sri Lanka. And India were the last team to humble Australia in a home Test.

Lets square the series
by Supratik on Jan 20, 2008 02:12 AM  | Hide replies

Great win but it's important to keep it up and play with the same intensity in Adelaide to level the series.
It's important a few important issues are addressed before Adelaide:
- Jaffer needs to be dropped. Dravid needs to go back to opening and although he's done well at No. 3 and it is crucial from a team's point of view because:
a) It frees up the No. 7 slot so both Pathan & Bhajji can play and India can go in with 5 bowlers which they're gonna need in Adelaide as it's a lot more batsman friendly.
b) It allows VVS Laxman to play at No. 3 where he bats his best. His inability to hit over the top means he cannot bat with tailenders at the end and although he did well in the 2nd inns here the team would get a lot more out of him at No. 3.
c) For the long term it creates some competition between youngsters for the No. 6/7 spot. Today Pathan's the best man to play there. Tomorrow it could be Yuvraj or Rohit Sharma who's pushing for that spot. This competition is good for the future.

P.S. One final thought: In the last 2 series against Aus our batsmen have often failed at crucial times and our bowlers have more often than not exceeded expectations. This win was set up by solid batting and outstanding bowling. It's time we Indians stopped glorifying this batting lineup so much and gave more respect to our bowlers like the lion-hearted Kumble.

1. if jaffer is dropped (highly unlikely) then leta open with Pathan... Dravid is best at 3.
2. laxman is more versatile and can easily do well at 6.

Other thoughts, why to change a winning combination? If the 4 bowlers (Sehwag ganguly) are counted, then we may not need an additional bowler

RE:Lets square the series

The idea is to always look for improvement. If changes are required for improved performance they have to happen and "don't change a winning combination" cannot be an excuse for preventing that from happening. And make no mistake: India have to play BETTER than they did here to beat Aussies in Adelaide. If they play the same they won't win and may even lose.
1. It's suicide to make Pathan open. He's a developing batsman but doesn't have the technique to open and do well there consistently. If he scores in the next game, fine. But what happens when he starts failing as opener?
2. I know it's tempting to keep Dravid at 3 just because he's done well there but the fact of the matter is we need a youngster at 6 consistently from now on for the long term and also in some cases we need to play 5 bowlers. Just because Sehwag got a couple of wickets this game that doesn't make him Harbhajan Singh.
3. Keeping Dravid at 3 prevents us from achieving these things. There's no doubt Laxman can do justice to the No. 3 position if given the chance. Dravid is also very capable of becoming a solid opening batsman till the end of his career. He just needs a fair chance to adapt his game to opening and not have the axe hanging over him or be shifted in the order after a couple of failures. And what's more, he can have Sehwag at the other end to take care of the scoring so he can just do what he does best: stay at the wicket.
So at this stage keeping Dravid at 3 is doing what's best for Drav

So at this stage keeping Dravid at 3 is doing what's best for Dravid personally, but it's not what's best for the team.

i hop your intention is not to start a series of bitter discussion between dada's supporters and bashers.

Dada is doing well in middle order and let's not disturb him. Opening in ODI and test are two different things. When Dravid is uncomfortable opening, Ganguly must be very very uncomfortable. Resolve may help in a match or innings but not on the long run.

If we want to finish Sourav's test career, sending him to open is a good option, but that won't help Indian cricket a bit.

Not everyone can do everything. Would you be comfortable with quitting your day job to do something completely different? Would it not take you time to get used to it? Are you saying there's no scope for you disliking it and coming back to what you do now? Ganguly's a great middle-order batsman no doubt, but that doesnt make him a great opening batsman. The fact that he's openly stated his dislike for opening makes sure he will not succeed as opener simply cos he doesn't want to get anywhere near it. Sometimes teams take educated gambles which pay off in the long term (Sehwag opening) but more often than not gambling backfires although it may win u a couple of games in the short term (ask any of India's umpteen makeshift openers).

Forget about Future plans....Are you serious?? Now I know why India isn't a champion team yet...the selectors so far have had an attitude like yours!
I have one question for you....what would you do if Pathan fails next match. Move him down the order? Drop him? Rest him and try another player? What if he succeeds and then fails next match? You gonna drop him and bring Pathan back in?
Of course it's important to win the next match but champion sides are the ones that balance the immediate prerogative of winning with ensuring that consistency is achieved for the longer term.
Pathan opening is short sighted and has no future. It might work for a couple of matches but that's it. Think about that before you jump to these crazy ideas of your's.

RE:Lets square the series

I don't think anyone's intention is to start any war with any supporters...but I can understand why people suggest Ganguly opening the innings. It's a role Dravid doesn't really enjoy and people think what's stopping the other seniors like Ganguly from being forced to do the job like Dravid has been?
Two things:
1) Dravid has the technique and has actually been a successful opener before whereas Ganguly has never opened, which is an important factor.
2) Dravid is much more adaptable and flexible as a person than Ganguly who is very "set in his ways". If Dravid is given a task slightly outside his comfort zone which he doesn't really wanna do he'll do it and do it well for the sake of the team, which is a very admirable quality in a person. If Dada is given such a task that he doesn't wanna do he won't do it BUT he'll find another very meaningful way of contributing to the team, which also shows Dada is a team man in his own right.
You can't just ask anyone to do anything for you and in this case you can't just ask anyone to open the innings but you can do so with Dravid. It's very important this is done for the reasons I outlined above and what's important is Dravid is given every encouragement and a fair chance to develop and finish his career off as a solid opening batsman.

Kumble knows his job well.
Talking about seniors why not sachin opens.
Jaffer is a useless, scored in bangalore on flat pitch.
Yuraj is another joke, not a test team player worried about deepika.
And now dhoni doesnot want seniors in team so out goes dada and dravid, dhoni rascalla you can get sachin out mumbai will break your neck.
Dont forget it is seniors who have performed well thats why its been a competitive series.
good knows what will be ODI results. sure to lose it to australia with dhoni and yuvi fighting for deepika raskallas

Why does every article have to mention about hussey's LBW as the lucky one? when infact Tendulkar and Dhoni were given out in similar fashion in the first innings. And as far as Symonds is concerned he got what he deserved.
