I really salute this guy for staying the course and serving Indian cricket for more than 15 years.
Since the retirement of Bedi/Chandra/Prasanna/Venkat, all spinners have been one series wonder. They take 16 or 17 wicket in the first match, by the end of the series they are history. Shiva/Maninder/Hirwani/Yadav/Doshi/Raju none of them stuck around for more than 2/3 years. Ravi Shastri was touted, but after 2 years, he became a Chapati batsman.

Where are you MAK Pataudi? Anil has made you eat your words in style!!
by mohan br on Jan 18, 2008 04:44 AM  | Hide replies

MAK Pataudi in one of his Sportsworld editorial in the year 1990 wrote very critically on Anil Kumble. Pataudi said that Anil was a one match wonder and he did not deserve to be in the team, as he did not even turn the ball to be succesful. It is probably critics such as Pataudi egged Anil to achieve what he has done all these years. It is a pity that this great cricketer of the country still has to prove in every match. What Pataudi missed to see is that you dont have to turn the ball 90 degrees to get wickets. All you need is a strong mind, capable body, fierce determination, subtle variations to create enough doubts on the batsmen's mind to be what Anil is today. What a great performer he is!

I salute this dedicated student of the game, a fierce competitor, a gentleman cricketer, a performer. We all wish that a victory over Australia in this test match and the next one will be an icing on this acheivement. Anil, you have made us proud! Keep going until you are enjoying it. Let us hope your passion to take you to newer heights.

In our country, every Tom, Dick & Harry becomes a cricket office-bearer and critic if he has influence and/or money, typical examples being Pataudi and Kiron More. These guys have played few matches for India and think they know every damn thing about cricket. I remeber a couple of jokes on Pataudi: (1) During a Ranji Trophy game, Sharmila called up the Fateh Maidan Stadium and asked for the Nawab (of Pataudi). The operator said, "Madam, he is just gone to batting", Sharmila said, "oh, Ok I will wait on the line". That was his batting capabilities. His famous number was 13 (score). He was a great fielder, and that was all about him. His riches made him all that popular. Second joke is a little 'R' rated. I will try to send in another mail later.

Pataudi and Sharmila were making love. And, he was out too quickly. She said, "man, you are done so fast. you just played a two balls and you are out, what is the matter?". Pataudi replied, "well, the pitch is too loose and worn out".

Lage Raho Anil Bhai

Wonder why the stupid selection committe and BCCI did not think of making you captain after Sourav was dropped.

The only reason that I can think of is because you had not played to many ODI after 2003 WC.

You are an inspiration for devotion and consistency. Your engineering education reflects in your demeanor.

I hope you play 2 more years of Test Cricket until 2010 atleast. Wish you the best fitness levels.

Actully, during the reign of Saurav, Bhajji was the preferred choice. Kumble played only if there were two spinners in the team.

Kumble deserves a golden cricket Ball
by Vishnu Sharma on Jan 18, 2008 02:45 AM  | Hide replies

I mean a cricket ball in pure Gold =24 Karat= which is identical to a regular ball with the words 600 engraved on it against the background of a map of India.

The unsung HERO....
by SUGEESH KUMAR on Jan 18, 2008 02:10 AM  | Hide replies

Congrats to Jumbo....

Anil Kumble has shown gr8 character, not only on the field, but also outside it. How many times did he have to sit out?Rarely has he commented abt anything. He always let his bowling do the talking. Everytime he came back with performance, even better than previous outings.Considering his age, when most of the peers are preparing to retire, or in oblivion,Anil has been going from goals to goals, higher and higher.
It will take some time for any Indian cricketer to reach this milestone.
Gr8 going Jumbo.Go on doing better than wat u have done till now....
U'll always stay as a Hero, though unsung, for Indian Cricket fans.

A Tribute
by vijay pvss on Jan 18, 2008 01:30 AM  | Hide replies

This is a tribute to arguably Indian cricket's greatest bowler ever. A great gentleman of the game and an even greater sportsman and human, this is my salute to Anil Kumble, India's Jumbo, the man with a heart of gold, and will power of steel. Always the unsung hero, Kumble is Indian cricket's Jewel in the Crown. A country known mainly for its outstanding batting greats like Sunny,Vishy,Vengsarkar, CK Nayudu, Pataudi,Sachin,Rahul, VVS and Sourav to name a few. And then were the great bowlers like Chandra, Bedi and a legend called Kapil. Kumble deserves to be high among them. Infact he completes India's great 5 with Sachin, Sourav, Rahul, VVS and Anil himself. Always a fighter to the core, but nevertheless a man with subdued emotions and one who always lets his bowling do all the talking, Kumble is an inspiration and an instruction manual on how to live one's life. How can anyone forget the day when Kumble came out to bowl with a bandage strapped round his head. Speaks volumes of the man's guts.It amazes everyone inculding the formidable Aussies how a man in his late 30's can bowl over after over in the same spirit, with the same energy and skill and at the same lengths. Its a fitting tribute that he has reached the 600 scalps mark and at this juncture when this series was in the news for all the wrong reasons. He is great ambassador of Indian cricket. Salute to Anil.Wishing him to achieve greater goals in future...

Congrats Jumbo! You achieved a very rare and distinct achiement by an indian (I strongly believe that this is going to be a record by an indian for a long time)

The one thing I always admire is your character on field, not to overjoy or disappoint in times.
