All what bhajji said was, "Manki shakthi Tannki shakthi" as he fought hard to make his 62 runs in the 1st innings, but alas, our dear friend (duffer) Symonds heard man-ki as (MONKEY)...and went crying to ponting saying he was called a monkey!!

Sachin was tired

Sachin was not selfish. He was very tired toward the end. If he was not tired then he would have scored runs more freely. He scored 154. Why are people complaining?

Laker,
Its people like you who, are born to criticise every possible thing in the world, spread the negativity on this earth. Had he(Sachin) not given the strike to the young player you would definitely have said that he didnt give any chance to the youngster.
So just shut your ugly mouth up.

Sachin is selfish
by Laker on Jan 05, 2008 04:06 AM  | Hide replies

Sachin is selfish player who plays for his own records than for the sake of country. This was evident when he was taking single of the first all of the over to give strike to an 18 year kid whose first class highest score was 9. Doesn't he has minimum cricket commonsense ? I guess he wanted to remain notout to improve his average against Aussies and thus his popularity in the nation that adulate him by comparig to their Cricketing great Don Bradman.

I can bet million dollars that he will choke in the second innings, he doesn't perform when India needs him.

Well said Rakesh! Had he got out after scoring 100, by taking most of the strike, these people will say that since he got 100 he got out and he is selfish. What is wrong in allowing the 9th and 10th batsmen face the bowling? They will also gain some confidence. Anyhow in their hearts of hearts these people want Sachin to fail every time be goes out to bat,so that they can go on criticising him.

Hi Smash, risk to an extent depends on field placement and the kind of deliveries the bowler bowls. The field was placed such that if tendulkar goes for a big hit then he is either caught in the outfield or gets out in some other manner. Hence it could in principle get riskier than giving Ishanth to play 5 brett lee balls. The plot pretty much worked. You are assuming that by playing big shots and shielding the tail Sachin would have been able to score at least 50 odd runs...(that scored by our tail enders)

I would trust the judgment of one who is considered to be the one oft he worlds best batsmen not by you and me but his contemporaries in world cricket (Akram, Warne, Mcgrath, Donald) as opposed to "smash".

I don't expect this to work every time. But here is the genius of the man. I can bet that he will not try it every time either. That is why he is considered to be the worlds best (again not just by me, but by some of the greatest bowlers and opposing captains)

As for fours and gaps, it again depends on the bowler and the field . With the outfield packed its not that easy to pick up a boundary or even twos. I trust Ponting and Lee to know enough cricket that they would have set and bowled to a field where picking twos and fours consistently would be difficult.Dont you think so? Give Ponting and the Australians that much credit.

Dont belittle the genius of the man by saying it was just luck, he read the situation beautifully and went with his instinct.Which may work sometime and may not work sometime. But the point is to think differently and give yourself a chance. This is why Lee called the tactic "Brilliant"

Now Sachin should learn how to play from people like smash who dont know anything other criticize even if someone contributes 154. Come out of your narrow mindedness mr.smash and learn to see the brighter side. If you have personal dislike for Sachin for whatever reason, atleast be wise not to talk at such a time when the whole world is praising him. If Sachin was playing for Australia he would have been knighted by now but some people are ungrateful. Just because he chose to give strike to number 11 batsmen they call him selfish without realizing that cricket is not just batting or playing but also thinking to outsmart the opposition. There is no use arguuing with people like you because you only see one track, which is to find fault in everything.

Mr Smash, yes I am a big fan of Sachin (most of the cricketing fans are) and all the great players, like Lara, Ponting, Lee,Kumble, Dravid,Kallis. So what? I appreciate the great game of cricket and relish good performances. If they dont perform well, I am disappointed and also criticize Sachin when he does not play well. But the criticism has to be fair, unlike yours which is splitting hairs just to find some fault and when none exists find something, like giving strike to a tailender.

Sachin gave his explanation, Brett Lee called the Tactic "brilliant"..But it is not enough to satisfy Laker and his clique of Sachin haters.
The Indian Team would be so much better if our champions Yuvraj & Dhoni also got terribly selfish and thought about scoring a century every time they stepped in the middle. We will have at least 300 guaranteed in every inning, because apparently the only qualification needed to score a 100 is to be selfish.

Hey Laker: Piece of advice, next time before you write in try picking up a bat or for that matter play any competitive sport. Or at least read (and reflect) about the game you are talking about!

only problem with this lineup is dhoni is vc and our 'future' captain...so can't drop him.. And atleast on perth, we need 6 batters(can't depend on dhoni)...so need to drop one bowler which would be bhajji. Now we don't have any better backup batsmen as only other reserves are jaffer and yuvraj. Yuvraj is hopeless and on this pitches...jaffer too is not much of use...but just for this next test...jaffer opening with sehwag and dravid holding the lower middle order at no# 6 with stroke makers in between would be a good option. For the last (4th) test..., above team looks good.

India's Chances of winning
by dhawal malot on Jan 05, 2008 02:46 AM  | Hide replies

Good bating display by indian batsman.

Now india can fancy their chances as the pitch is flat and wicket is on slower side our spinners have to play role in creating chances.

As far as Australian philosophy of playing is concerned they always play for win and hence everylikelihood of result in this match and time is also plenty.

Hope Indra Bhagwan will have blessings and this match can come out classic.

My bat is 50-50 for India.

India will lose. Indian batting will collapse like a pack of cards. We've made all the wrong decisions like keeping Jaffer, Dhoni and Yuvraj at the cost of resting Sehwag and Dinesh Karthik.

I honestly feel Sehwag and Dinesh Kartik would've atleast scored a few runs more than these 3 ppl I mentioned.

Does it matter if Sehwag and Karthik would have scored a few runs and the total be the same. BCCI atleast got to test what these players were made off. Sehwag and Karthik are known quantities. How does Yuvraj prove his potential -> by scoring runs which he did in Bangalore test, for that he deserves ample opportunity which he has got. Its not the lack of runs scored but the way he looked on the crease that is disturbing, and hence if he doesnt look good in the final innings I think he will be adequately replaced. Dhoni is a must for India. He must be chided for his play but he has proved himself enough to deserve an extended run, plus hes a keeper first.

Day 4
by Gagan Panwar on Jan 05, 2008 02:31 AM

If the Aussies are dismissed under 300 on Day 4, then India will have a great chance of winning this match. It is not going to be that easy though. The bowlers should target to get rid of the Australian batsmen as early as possible, do not allow them to build up partnerships and momentum and maintain pressure on them. We have a good 69 runs lead and this match is in our hands. The Indian batsmen have done well but now its the turn of the bowlers especially Harbhajan and Kumble. The are experienced and need to get the job done. While RP and Ishant should think of Bowling WICKET to WICKET instead of giving loose shot balls which can be easily hit on the of and leg sides. This match is in our hands and we should win it.

Good fightback by Team India
by Hritik on Jan 05, 2008 02:30 AM  | Hide replies

Its gr88 to see India fight back after the first test match fiasco. Even in this test.., aussies would have bundled out for less then 200 but for umpiring errors. Most likely results in this test is a draw or if somehow indian bowlers can get aussies bowled or caught in the slip(caught behind or lbw or stumping is tough to get with buckenor around) and get them under 250...India might win.

Whatever the result.., draw or Indian win(Aussi winning looks highly unlikely with last 2 days on scg pitch with them being 70 runs in deficit), Indian team should not forget the minus points..
a) Ishant even though a tad unlucky.., could not sustain momentum. RP needs a better partner on other end
b) For this pitch..2 spinners were good but for perth we need 3 seamers
c) Our no# 6 & 7 batsmen's contribution so far has been zero. Dhoni is a keeper batsmen...however yuvi was brought in the final 11 after lot of reshuffling. He should have grabbed this chance with both hands...but looks like...he is finding hard to adjust to test matches
d) Dravid did an excellent job in this match. Still, to get the old flued dravid, we need him to bat lower. Ideal team for perth:
Sehwag
Jaffar
Laxman
Sachin
Saurav
Dravid
Pathan
Dhoni

Lack of options buddy...
If it was any other ground, wish would be to pick 5 bowlers...get dravid and Sehwag to open with Laxman,Sachin,Saurav,Pathan,Dhoni,Kumble,RP& VRV to follow..
But on perth...need more cushion...If there was akash chopra or Gambhir in the reserve...jaffer would be next to go for his kind of batting won't click on aussi pitches since he has the habit of opening the face of his bat to almost every deliveries..

And to reply on whoami's comment.., Dravid with the kind of form he is now, would not help in building any momentum. Even with his current form, he can block one end up...so he can be good as an opener or lower down the order where after saurav...we don't have any dependable batsmen. Laxman and Sachin are doing good job at no# 3 and 4 so they should stay there..

Only way would be if Lee could do us a favour and break his bone...that way we can replace 'injured' jaffer and get someone with a better technique.
But as u said...looks like...he might score 40/50 in 2nd innings and secure his place...and then we wait for next olympics to see a big score from him...

Agreed Sachin is great...i am one of his fans.

Together with the last 3 tailenders he put on 168...But i still feel he was guilty of the following..
1. not shileding the no 11
2. not going by the customery way of attacking the bowlers in order to get some quick runs at the end..

Perhaps the following could be the reason
1. he was tired...was about 6 hours since he came to the crease.
2. at the end ponting spread the field all over the ropes when sachin batted. So hitting 4 was not easy at all. So perhaps Sachin was trying to out smart ponting, "if you set such a field i will take a single and that the number 11 will have better chance of hitting 4s since the field will be close-in." ...and to a reasonable extent this worked...he was constanty coaching Ishant from the other end.
3. also this is debatable but sachin does care about setting records, averages more than most and so wanted to remain not out....

so was it combination of all above? I still suspect whether this ploy will always work.

The idea of shielding tail enders works great in the 2nd innings when you are saving a test or playing for a draw. Given that we wanted to score runs, and go for a win to level series, it's not possible to shield the tail, and still score freely, especially when the fielders were closer to the boundary line. Its easier to blame Sachin, but that's just the fact...

don't fall for Ian chappel's b**sh*t man...Its not a rocket science...In 1st inning...you need more runs and there is no point in sheilding tailenders. Strategy that sachin used worked wonderfully...for him...all fielders were on boundary...but for RP and Ishant...they were brought in. Sachin gave them enough confidence to hit the ball hard and result was there for all to see...Might not work in all matches but didn't it work in this one??
