Players deserve it, let us accept gracefully
by Emperor Ashoka on Feb 23, 2008 09:40 AM

Many of us including me have never seen nor will ever see in future the kind of money that some of the cricketers have landed themselves in through IPL players auction.

This should not make me or you jealous. They are destined to get it and let them enjoy it. Let us accept it gracefully, after all you and I are not contributing a paise to their kitty and in fact watch them sweat it out in the middle of stadia and enjoy their game in the comforts of our drawing rooms, dining halls or office by paying peanuts to cable operators.

As regards the reported outcry of politicians about the auctions, let us ignore them. These good for nothing sinecures think that it is their exclusive privilege to live in royal comfort by looting the national exchequer.

India is currently the top team in cricket after the spectacular performance in AUS. Long term outlook for team India is great with an abundance of talent, especially bowlers and dashing batsmen. Indian players definitely deserve top money.

guys couple of years from now our country wont have youngsters to play test matches and 50-50. In this (20-20) race most upcoming talent will be vanished and ability to play longer innings in test will be gone forever.
Cricket will lose the real charm coz of bcci
there wont be great batsman like Sachin, Rahul, Laxman and Ganguly to play big innings
God Bless Cricket

Boy!
I think otherwise
As the young guns will be exposed to the international caliber players like ponting, gilchrist and gibbs and many others, in the next few years India will literally reign world cricket.
This is fantastic for young players throughout the country.

Just one agony though,
Why the Powar did not give Baroda a team when there are 5 international players playing from Gujarat: Parthiv, Irfan, Yousuf, Munaf and Zaheer

Int'l Leagues and IPL,ICL.
by fellowgoodie on Feb 22, 2008 02:33 PM

IPL is not done for the improvement of sport. It was done as a reactionary measure to ICL which was because of the fallout of the world cup defeat. And so the very basic reason of setting up IPL is not strong enough to warrant its existence. They were apprehensive that if they don't do that, ICL will do that and reap those benefits. Ideally ICL should have patented this thought in India and should have sued BCCI for forming IPL. This is what happens exactly in US. Basilly I dont like the of leagues in Cricket as ICL and IPL are just diluting cricket and the interest is lost. In US, the scenario is different. US does not play intl sport of rugby or baseball with other countries,so it does not do any harm if they invite intl' players, but here it is not like that. I hope this madness stops.
Cheers.

What a way of distributing money to the international public? This is not at all a good precedent for any good reason. BCCI is already richest, in fact its numbers are astronomical. Unless for the vested interest of the greed of becoming even richer and commercializing the sport, there is no other good reason. I have been watching cricket for the last 2 decades and there are many sporting heroes who toiled hard so that the sport is in a popular state that it is right now. Now all these budding youngsters are reaping that popularity benefits. Ideally BCCI should spend that money on increasing the pensions to all those unsung heroes and spend on improving the quality of the sport and the players by putting more money on developing grounds etc. But instead it is squandering all the money like this. But of course who to blame if a non -cricketer and a wily politician is at the top of the honors dictating terms like this. It is really disheartening to see that all the great players being discredited like this by being bid lesser than even new entrants. This insanity should stop some where. It only reminds me of one adage "Apatra daan" or in english Unqualified Donation. Please share your thoughts ,you like minded folks out there.
Cheers.

the sponsors are sure of getting money with this setup. Do you have any doubt?
Ultimately it is business.

IPL can be good if controlled properly
by Supratik on Feb 22, 2008 11:33 AM

There's many justifications of cricket becoming a club-based free market business like football:
1) The overwhelming majority of cricket's finances and target audience is from one geographical region: India. Therefore, the corporates (almost always Indian) who sponsor nearly every single major cricket tournament have an unhealthy dependency on the Indian team doing well so their brands receive maximum exposure to their biggest target audience: Indians. So much should never depend on the performance of one team. Club-based structure like the IPL would diversify this interest to ensure one team doesn't have so much say in the health of the game.
2) Fewer international matches will be played. This might not be such a bad thing as international cricket these days contains too many dud contests and too many incompetent teams like Pak, WI, SL, NZ and most of the time SA. These int'l teams won't get to play so many matches which won't be the worst thing. Their top players will still get to play in domestic clubs but their administrators will be forced to work harder to produce better more exciting cricketers than they are now.
Only drawback of the IPL is it's in T20 cricket and not Tests or ODIs. So if it continues to promote only T20 cricket then there's definitely a danger of Tests and ODIs being cannibalised. But if the same domestic-league concept is applied to Tests and ODIs in future the game would benefit.
