Learning fast the ropes!
by Ramesh Kapoor on Aug 28, 2008 07:51 PM  | Hide replies

Learning fast the ropes of administration from Sonia Gandhi, as head of UPA, say the Government of India, when Dr. Manmohan Singh is only a figurehead, we will now have a politician with powers to dictate how cricket should be played and who should be selected to sit on the selection panel. While the zoning system may have had its drawbacks, but at least on paper it was truly representative. Now, whoever is in the good books of Sharad Pawar, will find a seat. This sounds obnoxious but then that is what Cricket in India has been reduced to by these politicians-cum-administrators.

It is surprising how we just want to criticze BCCI. Though you are right BCCI is rep by politicians but tell what our old cricketers have done to take responsibility. Kapil Dev pref to be come paid employee of ZEE (though nothing wrong). Sidhu is politician cricketer but he wants to make money with laughter shows. Let us ask him what he has done for cricket at least for his city Amritsar forget state or country. He is only good at criticizing. Look at KirtiAzad another politician cricketer. Maninder he is drug adict. Same is case with Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar. Shard Pawar and Dalmia's filled coffers of BCCI now BCCI is reachest. Our team rep entire India and not few cities(it is almost difficult to find cricket ground in large city like Mumbai ). Today MSD's team has made country proud but who got him to head team it is vengsakar and his team. Shard Pawar is giving free hand to all members to play thier role. Let us all join and laud good work done by Mr Pawar and his team

Selectors should be selected by a panel or they should be elected not nominated by BCCI president. The post of selector is too important to be decided by one person. Also, would there be an accountability for the other BCCI office bearers or selectors would be made scapegoats?

The Zonal system is nothing but heirarchial and out dated.. paying the selectors means they are accountable... and indirectly the president then becomes accountable because if the selectors are non performers then questions are asked on his judegment

Dont try to bring regionalism into everything and show your ignorance. The past 2 selection committees did not even have a member from Mumbai. FYI, Shivlal Yadav, Gundappa Vishwanath, Kiran More are not from Mumbai and they were Chairman of the selection committee in the recent past.

Move to kill Dalmia
by Naalayak Chhokra on Aug 28, 2008 07:24 PM

This is Pawar's move to kill Dalmia who is now the Bengal Cricket Association head.
By having this authority he can make Dalmia stay away from center stage.

all politics no cricketing benefits

I think Sweet is correct. We do understand that the president will appoint only the selectors and not intervene in the selection of players. We also understand that President will appoint only selectors from Mumbai who in turn will show him the loyalty by selecting the likes of Agarkars, Kulkarnis.

Forget Agarkar, he should never be selected again for India. Played for 10 years but never shown any improvement at all. Always bowls 1-2 boundary balls every over. His batting strength is only on paper, never delivered when needed.

no he is 2nd higest wicket taker from India. He is among best 5 all time bowler because of strike rate. Why he should not be in team. Just because he comes from Mumbai. But we should Have Yuraj in team pathan should be in team. Among current cricketer how many have below 4.5 eco rate

He took 288 wickets in 190 odd games but most of his wickets have been in slog overs. How many of these 288 he took in the initial overs (less than 120). He is never consistent and bowls atleast 1-2 boundary balls per over.

Lets compare Zaheer Khan and Agarkar...
ZKs eco rate is 4.84 compared to agarkars 5.07... this is the only statistic where zk scores over agarkar.. agarkar takes 1.5 wks a match compared to zaheers 1.4... agarkar has a better strike rate and a better average.. not to mention he is a pretty good fielder and much better batsman that zaheer khan...
I do think khan is a much much better bowler, especially in tests.. but dont call agarkar useless. even when we compare him to indias best he compares quite favourably..

I fully agree with this view. The players from South are always put under pressure to perform or perish so it is going to be difficult for them. The Northern lobby with its aggressive postures is the order of the day & cricket culture on the field is also changing.

Sreesanth is a show boat.. while he is busy dancing and getting slapped around Praveen Kumar comes and takes wickets... Uthappa the man who has a funky haircut and started to play up to the galleries like bow down after taking catches has forgotten how to bat sensibly.. balaji is a spent force.. a hatrick in a t20 match isnt something to crow much about and ojha has been selected on mere ipl performances that to in tests... Badrinath is already in the team and maybe a little late but iam sure thats not cos hes from the south..

Before speaking against BCCI, keep one thing in mind...if at all we are fans of cricket today...it is because of BCCI...if Indian cricket board was under the government, our cricket would have been languishing just like other boards. .if cricekt has become popular and rich..it is becuase none of the ministers or political parties are able to control it...though few of its office-bearers have political affiliations...policy matters are done by people who have some inclination towards cricket...I bet even today...take away cricket, hockey, athletics from government's hand and give it to BCCI...we are sure to reap good results and we will have world beaters...There might have been some irregularities in BCCI...but they are minute compared to other sports associations such as hockey, athletics, badmintor which are run by govt...if our nation still has to achieve a lot in other fields than cricket...then it is because government controls those discipline...we have sports ministers who hardly know what sports is...what they can contribute for sports? If government is really bothered to prepare world-beating athletes, football team or any other discipline...let them keep BCCI as role model...BCCI earns money and spends on improving stadiums, players, coaches etc...but for other sports...government hardly gives money...provides for adequate training etc...Despite all shortcomings of BCCI... I feel they should be given credit for having made cricket popular in our country...

Select players from Mumbai only
by Lalukumar Choubey on Aug 28, 2008 05:38 PM  | Hide replies

It is a great development. This will ensure inclusion of Mumbaikars only. Let India disintigrate like Yogoslavia. Then Mumbai will play test with Punjab, Tamilnadu will play test with Bengal, Kerala will play test with Nagaland. Gujarat will play ODI with Tripura.
ICC will have more members like FIFA.
