foreign captains
by Ajai Jacob on Aug 08, 2008 03:02 PM

One can see from the list that England had the maximum number of foreign captains. This is ample proof for the lack of interest of british public in cricket.Football reigns supreme in England, the cradle of cricket.Only a handful of third world countries like India are mad about cricket,a passive game.Us Indians can't compete in highly competitive games where many countries participate.Hence we confine ourselves to cricket.Statistics show that India generates 70% of the earnings of world cricket. This is ridiculous. And the situation seems to remain the same in future too.

I am sorry, it was my mistake and not rediff. I thought the list contained names of English captains born in different countries. Apologies

Anjali,
As a patriotic Indian, I'd rather have a mad Indian like you dead rather than a sensible Pakistani.

Well if reports are to be believed, the kingpin of match fixing actually played for India when he was captain of Pakistan.

You are refering to Douglas Jardine - born in India who has the highest win percentage. Do not forget he won most matches due to his shameful strategy of 'bodyline'. After the controversial tour of Australia, England toured India and he was almost beaten up by the angry crowd in Calcutta - despite being born in India.

Seth, If winning would have been everything then we should have continued with barbaric wars and not civilized into sports. winning is not everything. Spirit of sports is far far higher than that.

Theoretically, Jardine was not born in India, He was born in British India which came under the British Crown, hence formed a part of United Kingdom. So...
