Rahul Dravid resigns as Team India captain
by neena naik on Sep 22, 2007 10:48 PM  | Hide replies

I am getting tired of reading a lot of non-sense about Dravid%u2019s term as a captain.
Invariably it has always been coloured by the prejudices that people carry and very rarely based on clear thinking.
Take the last test in England. Dravid followed a process that ensured that there was no chance of losing the series. Many teams including those like Australia have buckled on the last day after having dominated for the first four days.
Dravid has never let the heart rule the decision making though at times this may have given the impression of lacking in imagination.
It is nice to see flamboyance but in the end results matter more.
Let those who criticise Dravid not forget that he captained a team that had many stalwarts passing through the twilight phase in their careers.
Most other captains listed below had a Tendulkar, a Gavaskar, a Kapil dev, a Kumble, an Azharuddin, a Ganguly or a Dravid himself in their prime. Yet you can see how they fared in their terms as captaincy on the prime test of a captain %u2013 Captaincy of a team on foreign soil.
Dravid comes out on top in terms of win loss ratio as also the number of series won.
Dravid and Ganguly sharing one Pak series.
Last but not the least how many compare to him as a true gentleman.
Captaincy Record for Tests played abroad :

      Tests Wins Lost      W/LRatio Series-Wins
Rahul       17 5 4      1.25 4
Saurav       28 11 10      1.1       4
Kapil       14 2       3      0.66       1
Bishen       14 3       8      0.37       0
Sunil G      18 2

dravid victim of dirty politics of 2ex captain
by Suman Bhat on Sep 16, 2007 09:05 AM  | Hide replies

Test record of ind last 3 capains.
Names       Matches       Won       Lost       Drawn win loss raito

Tendulka       25       4       9       12 0.44
Ganguly       49      29      13   ;    15       1.62
Dravid              25      8       6       11       1.33
In less than 2 yrs dravids achievement as captain praiseworthy but ind media/ex cricters always keep on dravid bashing while no guts highlight the dirty polotics of 2 ex captains tendulkar wants to be captain and ganguly did not want to harm his stat as successful captian. Dravid gave 100%performance when he played under ganguly and tendulkar but betrayed by superstars.
sick tendulakr andpolitician gangauly betryaed dravid and tendulkar want become captian and ganguly did not want harm the stat as successful captian. both are jealous of dravid success as captain and even chief selector never respected or supported dravid as captain.
chappell highlighted the dirty politics of thendulkar and ganguly and kicked out now dravid made victim and forced to resign
what is the?r to selct? when 2ex captains workd so hard to bring down dravid and tendulakr wnated to become captian the dirty politics of 2ex captains were highlighted by chappell and he was shown the door now dravid made vicitm.

dravid is victim of dirty politics of 2 excattains and chief selector
by Suman Bhat on Sep 16, 2007 09:04 AM

dravid made vicitm of dressing room dirty politics of 2ex captains of team ind and forced to resign.
dravid as a captain did good job icc had nominated him for captian of yr last year. team won odis and test series without tendulkar and ganguly under dravid's captincy. but 2 ex captains and chief selector never respected or cooperated dravid's captaincy. chappell highlighted the dressing room politics of 2 superstar ex captins and shown door making him scapegoat for WC debacle. now dravid made victim
dravid is most successful odi captin. he did good job as captain in less than 2 yrs he surpassed ganguly' recored.
Odi record for ind captains
Names       Matches       Won       Lost       Drawn/TiedWon%
Kapil Dev       74       40      32       2       54.05%
M Azharuddin      173       89       76       6/2       51.45%
SR Tendulkar       73       23       43       6/1       31.51%
SC Ganguly       146      76       65       5       52.05%
R Dravid       79      42       33       4       56.00
while ganguly had led team for 5 yrs with full support of dalmiay dravid won more matches in less than 2 yrs while 2ex captains breathing his neck aginst his captincy dravid did good job but his teammates only ditched him In Sl team no ex captian or senior players are not jealous of mahilas' promotion as captian and all players support him and play as one unit not for sponsers or self record so SL team is doing better

common guys respect the guys who played well and has given whatever they had for the team.you guys are worse than the characters of "saash bhi kabhi bahu thii".you guys dig so much that you never appreciate anyone.just guys take it as a game,any1 can loose anyday coz it just a game.you might think as if it is a religion in your country, but the fact is it is first a game than may be your religion or pride or anything you can call it.so just appreciate the players of their dedication.comon Ganguly,Tendulkar,Dravid all gave what they had and you guys never accept that yes they gave us what they had in themselves but the main thing is you all have set your ambition so high that they actually never can live up to ur expectation.if they had won the WC in 2003 and lost to any team after the WC than you all would definitely say whts the use of being a world champion and loosing.so i think its the fault of the players that they are not doing so well,it is the fault of the spectators that they are creating a level which the players can never meet, and to achieve that level created by you guys, they always fall short.they feel the expectation fo you guys are always keeping them far away from performing well.so if you want your team to be the best than stop putting that additional pressure which always weakens your team, let them once in their life play in relaxed mood and see how better they perform.

The next captain of Team India
by Padmanabhan S on Sep 15, 2007 09:33 PM  | Hide replies

It should be Sourabh Ganguly again. BCCI is toying with the idea of making Sachin Tendulkar the skipper again, but it is a foolish experiment. Tendulkar himself was not confident and therefore, quit the job. To offer it again to him is an indication that BCCI wants the skipper to be submissive to it. The captain by default, Mr. Rahul Dravid had only this quality in him to continue for two long years without any distinction. Now, another player with same qualities is Sachin Tendulkar. That he is a great batsman is another matter. Does BCCI wants their puppets as the team India captain?
As for other players, there is no one who is assured of a place in Team India for long. If one of them is made a captain for one match or series, he may lose the very place in the team for the next match or series.
That being the case, Sourabh Ganguly is only the best captain available. In any case, it is his rightful place, which was snatched away by BCCI at the instance and instigation of Greg Chappel, who only had the mission of subduing India from flourishing.

maybe they are worried about what happens if Sourav is out of form for a long time ? Will he cling on to captaincy as in the past ?

Captaining in the sub continent
by Yehswanth Pai on Sep 15, 2007 07:51 PM

the best captains in the sub continent are certainly the bowlers-going by past experience! This has its own reasons. We are extremely emotional lot and this bears down heavily on the batting, especially if the captain is a batsman-since batting more than bowling is a highly mind-game. Look the best captains the sub continent ever had were Kapildev, Wasi Akram and Imran Khan. Just go by their records and you will see the teams could reach their pinnacle whilst these guys lead the way. Making a wicket keeper a captain (Dhoni for eg., ) could be an experiment worth the effort. But then again don't expect much from his bat!!!Yeshwanth Pai from Bangalore

Dravids resignation
by RD Mani on Sep 15, 2007 05:35 PM

Well Captaincy of the Indian criket team is no easy job and Dravid has learnt the hard way. His tenure as captain can never be considered as brilliant. I believe the captaincy should immediately go back to Ganguly with Dhoni or Yuvi as deputy to pick up the tricks of the trade.

Dravid has proven his honesty and courage
by Sudipto Ghosh on Sep 15, 2007 04:11 PM  | Hide replies

Being the captain of the Indian cricket team takes a lot of courage but it takes a lot more to resign from the job and to admit that it affected his batting. This just goes on to prove Dravid's honesty and dedication to the game and to Indian cricket. Hats off to him.
I always admired Dravid for his simplicity and character let alone his exceptional batting. It makes me respect him even more.
I am not sure how the selection committee will go from here on. In my opinion it may not be a good decision not to make a senior player the captain (essentially limiting the choice down to Tendulkar and Ganguly) simply because it would be an added burden on a junior player to be in command in presence of 3 senior players who also happen to be fairly successful ex-captains (and before anyone comments on that, leaving the senior players out of the team is NOT an option because we do not have replacements).
In my personal opinion, the best way to go forward would be to re-instate Ganguly as the captain and have Yuvraj or Dhoni as vice-captain which would give the junior players good experience and would be well mature to take command in a year or two.
I say Ganguly and not Tendulkar because:
1. Tendulkar has come back in form and it is best that he concentrates in his batting (also in the past he has shown reluctance to take over the reins)
2. Ganguly has good experience in that post with good results.
3. Ganguly is one of the senior players and most of the members in the Indian te

CONTD...

3. Ganguly is one of the senior players and most of the members in the Indian team have played under him at some point.
4. Ganguly does not have exemplary batting skills therefore he should not have problems like Tendulkar and Dravid.
5. Ganguly has learnt his lesson when he was stripped of his captaincy and was left out of the team. He would not take things for granted again.
6. In short Ganguly doesn't have much to lose therefore the pressure on him would be much less than on any one else and he would be able to perform better both as a captain and a player.
That was my personal opinion. Open to suggestions but more importantly lets wait and see what the selection committee has to say.
Cheers.

sachin would be the best captain
by mahendra sharma on Sep 15, 2007 03:03 PM

BCCI should use sachin as Captain .
B'cos we want india to win . & Sachin is top scorer in last 3 series.he is the only inform & consistant batsman these days. Do doubt that Sachin is still The Best. that he already prooved in last series.no one in indian team near by sachin in last three series.so he shuold be make the captain ofIndian Team. if we want india to win, we need to have sachin as Captain in the team.he is the only who can give us victory.Sachin will be the best captain because he has max. exeperience, & a all round ability
