Stats on Dravid
by Jim on Sep 08, 2007 01:28 AM  | Hide replies

I just want to tell you guys about some stats.

He has captained the team in 78 games and his win/loss record is:

42 wins (I am praying for the 43rd tomorrow) and 32 losses

His average as captain is 42
His average as Captain when we are winning is 53
When we lose his average is 35

We are looking at a consistent performer that has a superb winning record for an India team captain.

I love Saurav for his fiesitness. I hope he takes charge of Indian team as Coach soon. He will be fantastic in combination with someone like Viv Richards.

Saurav's Record was:

Saurav captained in 147 games and his record was:

76 matches won and 66 matches lost

When we win his average was 51
When we lost his average was 26

Saurav had all these guys we talk about in their PRIME. Now we have what is called the Buddha Brigade (very unfair and only in India do we call a 34 year old BUDDHA!!!). Rahul has had to deal with experimentation, new blood, Chappell woes, and finally the batsmen out of form!

Give the guy some credit guys and give him time along with the other seniors to leave with a good team at the helm.

i m not a die hard supporter of ganguly, but wud like to disagree with u here. dravid may hav won high percentage matches but the oppositions have been week (Bangladesh, Ireland, Scotland, etc.). Saurav may hav also got some week opp. but the main point is he had the killer instinct n the team spirit was visible. I dont recommend ganguly to b captain again, but still v shud agree, he was the best captain of our times.

The fact is that Dravid have won matches against better opposition. Ganguly has not test series victory outside the subcontinent--i.e. against England, SA, Australia and New Zealand. I think that Dravid is a better test capatain since he is is a good thinker and planner. Ganguly was an impulsive captain.

Our greatest test victory (against aussies in India) was when Ganguly was at helm. VVS, dravid and harbhajan were superb that series.
He also gave us Natwest trophy, thanks to Kaif and world cup in SA where we did reach finals when nobody gave us an outside chance.

hey guys stop same old 'who is better captain' discussion..
Kapil dev was the best captain..He won WC, test series in Eng and also helped win World Series in AUS in 85--I wonder why Gavaskar was made captain that time..
Ganguly--nothing but natwest trophy and joint winner of Champions trophy 2002.. 1-1 test matches in Eng, Aus..
Dravid--WI & ENG test series..both weaker teams compared to past.. big disaster WC failure by doing CHappel's slavery..

whats so big deal about it...
they are mere statistics to feel good about at old age as a retired cricketer..nothing to be proud of..

Dravid

I dont really understand the animosity towards a cricketer that has helped India win their first series in the West Indies in 36 years, first ever test win in South Africa, a test series win in England, a one-day series win (a thumping one) over Pakistan. He is one guy who focusses on what is required to make Indian cricket stand out.

Why do we want to hate this guy based on some baseless allegations about him supporting Chappell to remove Ganguly??? Think about it, before Ganguly was removed he was booed in INDIA in one-day matches. He looked terribly out of sorts with his batting.

Dravid maintained docorum by not talking against Chappell who was appointed by the board. What do we want from a decent human being, a leader who wants to make the team better? Do we want him to come out and speak against the coach with a 2-year tenure in the middle of a series? Why are we so bigoted agains our own kind?

Think about it, under Saurav we did not win a single series. We are now winning series. We are also working on expecting more out of each player. There is nothing wrong in saying "I am good may be even great but, I still have room to improve". Only insecure and defensive people will question Dravid's approach of making this team better. He is a genial guy and someone that has the spirit to fight.

We constantly talk about people trying to hang on to captaincy. What in Indian psyche makes this am important topic to talk about? There must be something wrong!!

I agree with you. Ganguly was dropped because of bad performance. Shewag has also been dropped for the same reason. In fact, Ganguly supporters made his come back more difficult through their behavior. Also, the team is never slected by Captain.

I think slowest Test cricketer was Pranab Roy with sanghatik (Solid) defence. You should know that Dravid has the highest strike rate in this ODI series. ganguly's strike rate in 70 something and Dravid's strike rate is 87 in this series.

However diff. lies in human only then he might be Ganguly (For Aggression) & Dravid (For Coolness. WE JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW THEY PERFORM (In terms of Output). Nothing else.

Let us take these one step at a time:

The slowest 12: Why are we forgetting the quick 92? If he had gotten out along with the other 3 that got out, what would happen. It is good to talk about positives when you are sitting around telling people what to do. Give me an example of a POSITIVE CHANCE you took in your life throwing caution to the wind? Just one example.

England Follow On: We had 110 overs of pressure free time to take 10 wickets and the team failed on a 5th day pitch. Why dont we try to analyze that? If we just want to talk one thing all the time and we are all out for something like 100 in Mumbai in 34 overs, who is responsible for losing the game? Forget the talk about being positive, werent the Indians positive that day when at home they collapsed? Werent they positive when they collapsed against the West Indies? If Kumble bowled like Harbajan did against Australia when we got the side out in under 55 overs, we would not be having these arguments. There are always two sides to the coin. Learn to support people you put in a position to perform for your team. Do not show the attitude of "I know better than everyone". That is the attitude that cost US INDIANS everything.

Extra Bat: 50% of the critics want an extra bowler because 7th guy never really bats. The day he plays 5 bowlers our old batsmen look like they cannot bat. On the day he plays 7 bats, everyone contributes.

He has been choosing youth for the record. I will continue..

Continued from above:

We tried all the youth to give the team something. They FAILED. Gambhir plays once in a while and has the bad habbit of getting out at the wrong times, Raina is injured, Sehwag got burned out, Karthik has been given quite a few chances and he has been inconsistent, just a few days ago the same people were calling Uthappa too young and inexperienced when he looked very tense at the world cup.

Let us be balanced in working here. We seem to have the habbit of pulling down OUR OWN!!! We constantly attack our own people over and over again. Why do we do that?

I want to address the aggression part of the complaint: Aggression does not mean a Captain needs to Growl. I have never seen Ponting GROWL. Mcgrath, Warne, Lee, and Clarke/Johnson/Gillespie bowl to their fields and take wickets irrespective of who is in charge. Michael Vaughn had England win the Ashes making them aggressive because of a goal.

Our team needs a kick in the rear every day to get aggressive. That cannot be a persistent situation. We need to have players that are motivated irrespective of whether or not they get the kick in their rear. Captain leads on the field through planning and picking the right teams.

Support the guy and criticize him for cricketing decisions if there is merit. Dont indulge in bringing the guy down because you read something a writer wrote. People in India write anything for a living! Look at the so called sting in Delhi! DO NOT BELIEVE!

Jim,
We had 110 overs to get 10 overs, but the easy catch that dravid dropped of vaughan took off one hour (roughly 15 overs of high pressure)away from England.Had Dravid held on to that sitter,we would be 2-0 up anyways.
