Hansie Cronje

I remember distinctly in one match against India when Hansie's frowny looks sent the fielder from Mid On to Long On. There was no word spoken except a look and everything was understood.

Here is a man who got stuttered by the middle of the way, then repented, accepted his mistakes, asked for forgiving and people's support and got lost in the middle.

Feel the pain, humility and hurt he must have felt to travel in a cargo aircraft from one place to another and not in a regular flight.

Considering the way Hansie accepted his fate and wrongs and to think how people like Mark Waugh, Shane Warne, Scores of Indian and Pakistani Cricketers are still playing and hogging the limelight I still rate him the best man on field and off field.

Hansie Cronje was the man who made me love South African Cricket team. Even today they are my most favourites. I would love them to lift world cups and more trophies.

All the best for them and Hansie's affection would carry them far above the pinnacles soon.

Thanks for the write up ! I also felt the same way, unless you are too brave you can't do all this and by taking all the blames in his shoulder he had saved the carrear of lot of present South African players.

Hansie had the courage to tell the truth
by Checksum Error on Oct 31, 2007 06:29 AM  | Hide replies

Hansie was a great cricketer. He was a great leader. He was the man who put South African cricket on top with his able leadership. His performance on the field cannot be taken away. He had the courage to tell the truth and paid a heavy price for that...with his life. Many contemporary cricketers, coaches were involved and still getting involved without getting caught. I chose the word getting involved because I donot believe that match fixing have ended, maybe it has become more modern so the authorities are not able to catch them. The amount of money involved in cricket now has become 10 to 50 times more than it was during Hansie's time because now you have another version 20-20 which was not there at that time. Apart from the internationals, now the Board and their anti parties are coming up with their own version involving top class players for more moolah. May Hansie's soul rest in peace. He would live in memory as a great cricketer and a great captain.

U do not know what Hansie told his team mates during one of their meeting just before a match....Man, he was very money minded and he told his mates that they could get to be millionaires overnite if they 'lost' the next match. He was ready to do anything for money.

Arvind, every one does mistakes. The real man is one who aggrees his mistakes. You should be very brave to accept mistakes. What about Indian/Aus and Paki players who were involved in match fixing.

He admitted only in the court. If he was so brave,he wud have admitted b4 being taken to the court. For your info, even Azhar (India),Salim Malik & Ata Ur Rehman(Pakistan) r also facing the same fate.Only the Aussie cricketers were let go by the ICC ,for the reasons known to them.
