TATA SKY a RIP OFF
by Vinay Zaveri on Oct 29, 2007 11:54 PM  | Hide replies

These sports channels r demanding a hell of a money for their broadcasting rights. I hope DD shows the live telecast of the ODIs atleast. TATA SKY is a rip off. It is demanding extra Rs200 even after we pay for RS 300 a month for the combo package. People beware from these DTH providers they stab you at the back

ur message is misleading-- it is Rs.199/- for the YEAR. and not Rs.200 per month as u seem to imply.
i am not a supporter of Tata Sky and neither do I work for any Tata group.

but the fact is that these broadcasters and distributors of channels like cable/dth operators start armtwisting of viewers at the start of an imp series.

Tatasky is the present day EAST INDIA COMPANY. The TATAs have aligned with the British Sky TV and are holding the Indian public to ransom.

Tatas are shrewd business men. Remember every subscriber has been given a booklet of rules and regulations which unfortunately is not read by any one. This is authorisation for TATAs to loot public..... Expect more like this..... .But there is solution.... there will be competition... look out for it.

Give telecast rights to two different rival broadcasters(channels)
by Anshul on Oct 29, 2007 11:19 PM

the declining quality of commentary and increased break time to such an extent that 1st and last ball of over are unwatchable, and not to forget the rising channel rates ,giving telecast rights to two different rival brodcasters only seems to be the solution. Let there be healthy competition between them these will eradicate all problems.
the viewership dd gets there will be competition for making deal with dd instead of wat they r acting now.these solution will safegaurd rights of all whether he is viewer or broadcaster or bcci

sharing feed with DD
by Prasad Waingankar on Oct 29, 2007 11:04 PM  | Hide replies

Why prasar bharti wants the cricket feed for free everytime. when BCCI have officially sold the rights to Nimbus. When Nimbus have paid for it, they should get it exclusively.

When prasar bharti have highest TRP & they have maximum coverage in India then why they did not give a highest Bid for telecast rights.

They know that they will get these rights anytime by backdoor entry.

useless prasarbharti people.

Prasar Bharti is not a commercial organisation and hence will not bid for obscene rates for cricket telecast. At the same time - it has a reach which Neo cannot reach. You may argue why government should bother about cricket telecast to masses - well they have a votebank to cater to and their well being is a part of it. In fact - it is a matter of argument why ESPN which is the world's sportsbroadcaster did not bid for the event - that is because the rates were unviable and they would have to really cut costs , quality and squeeze in more commercials than needed. Neo sports is one example of how greedy businessmen over reach themselves .

do you mean to say that doordarshan don't show any adds during their shows, ofcourse they show, during 2003 cricket worldcup DD's add rate was around 80000 rs/sec. they just want to full the people by getting their sympathy.

bid for the rights & get it.

agreed with you prasad..this is crazy..in a so called free market economy, this is a crazy law by DD. i would love to see matches and esp Ind-Pak, but peoples' expectation that you get everything for free is unjustifiable.

DD is one bunch of morons

it is for ppl like who r interested in paying for watching, cable operators/broadcasters start armtwisting before the start of a new series, and block channels. it is the same ppl who start blaming the cable operators if they hike the subscription.

Give the rights to DD but ask them to broadcast the next day of the match!!!

DD sucks. Low quality transmission, bakwas commentary team and more ads than cricket...

Commercial Cricket
by v chandrasekaran on Oct 29, 2007 11:04 PM  | Hide replies

Cricket in India, of late, is not a sport but a commercial venture noawadays. Prasar Bharti (a Govt. avatar) could have matched the bid of Nimbus and obtained the contract and subsequently sold the rights to other broadcasters if need be. Government, in case such a clause does not exist, may bring in a legislation to the effect that the Prasar Bharti shall, in any sport, have the right to match the highest bid so as to obtain the contract. Instead of doing in such a fashion, Govt. through Prasar Bharti is arm-twisting the highest bidder, in this case Nimbus. Or, in the extreme, Govt. may introduce a legislation to the effect that BCCI or any sports body will not invite bids for telecast and only Prasar Bharti will telecast all sports events and the revenue from advertisements will be shared between Prasar Bharti and BCCI/other sport bodies, which would be the best solution. I do not agree that one-dayers & 20-20s are the only ones of 'public interest' a clause now invoked, and NOT the test matches! It is not the game of cricket as such that Prasar Bharti is interested in, but the ad-generating one-dayers & 20-20s. Kudos to Prasar Bharti for invoking 'public interest' clause on its own logic! Obviously, Prasar Bharti will NOT be interested in other sports.

yes. agreed y only odi and tti is of national imp. even test matches which r more relevant ckt shud b considered by dd, but dd is interested in ad revenue, but that is the ultimate motivation of pvt channels also.
But, since the last 2 years, it is already known to the broadcasters that in india, they wud hv to share the feed to DD which caters to the whole of india unlike pvt channels which is seen by a few mostly in the metro/towns. So they already know at the time of bidding.

by Anurag Shrivastava on Oct 29, 2007 08:58 PM  | Hide replies

I had preferred watching DD during the recent Australlia series primarily because for once D had fewer Ads during the break. Also - while the quality of commentary on DD is nothing great , it is not as if Neo Sports has any world class commentators unlike ESPN-Star or even Ten Sports.

I think if Nimbus does not like sharing the feed with DD - it is most welcome to do so as ESS will be happy to take it up and will still make money while sharing with DD.

Hindi commentators comments were cheap and funny especially those of Hindi commentators. Most of the time they enjoy showing patriotism by making biased remarks and predictions. Incidentally every time they start praising and predicting an Indian player of scoring big score he was seen losing his wicket embarassing our great experts! Let the commentary be only in English.

it is in our mindset only. v r prejudicial and inclined more towards english. The same commentator if gives comment in eng, v wud prefer but if the same person start commentating in hindi, v will say this is not good one. I think Shastri used to comment initially in Hindi then he started in english. even Maninder Singh (may b).

probably our mindset is prejudicial towards eng. if the same commentator talks in eng, v appreciate but the same one if starts talking in hindi, v will say his talking has deteriorated. I think, initially, Shastri started commentory in hindi then he switched to eng. Similar is Maninder. V hv to change the mindset.
(I hv seen many, who wud watch hollywood movie in eng, but if the dubbed version of the same movie comes to them, they wud say, it is not good compared to the original one).

why sports channels book all good commentators
especially when there is acute shortage of good commentators.Sunil gavaskar, geoffery boycott, tony grig,Ravi shastri etc r all booked. its long time back we had their commentary
bcci should make compulsary good commentary to whomsoever it gives telecast rights.
see ,now we will be deprived of good commentary on comming pak series, that's really injustice,
neosports should rope in good commentators or forget about profit.
y would one watch highly priced neosports if they dont have good commentary neither shorter breaks instead of freely available dd
of freely availabe

what has the govt done well in this....except make a quick buck at the expense of nimbus sports.
The govt is not willing to show matches of hockey(which if u do not know is our NATIONAL sport) but at the same time it is giving cricket matches(only the ODI's) the status of "sporting event of national interest".
If Prasar Bhrarti is willing to use such unfair measures for other events as well then I have no probs but this is only for making money

prasar bharati shows non-ckt matches also which r not well marketed by respective organisations. they show all other events like asian games, commonwealth games/olympic games, etc., even chess, athletic events, which in india are not commercially viable. DD earns money from ckt and also shows other matches without only thinking of profit, it is like a subsidy, and prasar bharati being public broadcaster has to do it for the masses.
