Racism in India
by anand datar on Oct 18, 2007 12:47 PM

Australians very well know that their racist charges on Indian spectators are baseless. If they so feel, are they prepared to boycott India ? NO ! Because there is lots of money in India ! And so far so many cricket teams from all over the world have come here, even earlier Australian teams, but no one called our spectators 'racists' ! These are some new tantrums they are playing !! They are like that only. Not to worry.

Its all a baseless hype...

Racism is when someone is differentiated or demeaned on the basis of their race or colour. Example: When Indians were not allowed in places where the British frequented during the days of the Raj OR when a white man calls an Afro-caribbean man 'Black'.

I fail to understand as to how in the Symmonds' case the issue of racism even came up.

1. Monkey is an animal and NOT a race at all.

2. The skin colour of the average Indian is not significantly different from that of Symmonds.

There is no basis of racism here at all!!
If this is racism then people who called Pataudi tiger are racists for calling a man tiger!!

The whole issue doesn't make any sense to me at all. It just sounds like a bit of Monkey business (oops! I'm being racist!!)

You are right Sudipto. Racism is a claim that one race is better than the other.

Here the situation is completely different. If people called him a monkey of sorts it can only be because of his matted hair, his huge build and his white 'lipstick'.

They were making fun of his 'looks', NOT his race!

Making fun of someone's appearence in a manner that is demeaning is racism. We Indians are racist towards dark skinned people in general.

VS (or is it BS), from your definition- making fun of a tall guy by calling him 'lamboo' etc is racism!? And children all over the world call each other monkey, donkey etc. They must all be racists!

Right now Im making fun of your intellect (the lack of it) so I must be a racist and you must be a victim of racism!

Im certainly prejudiced towards idiots like you! Good luck!

Dear Raja Ram, I did not understand the relavence of your reply. It does not make sense. Its not your fault if you have not been with enough intelligence. I suppose its better to have a tiger coming to someones home than a DONKEY!!

Dear VS thank you for your reply. I completely agree with your opinion. Making fun of someones' appearance is wrong and should be condemned.
I would also like to say that Symmonds' skin colour may be darker than a white Australian but certainly not someone who can be categorised as a so-called 'black' and he has similar skin colour to an average Indian.

Appearance and demeanour are different.
A 120kg man with matted hair and white lipstick obviously looks like a monkey!

Comeon guys...why is calling a monkey worse than all the abuse that happens in cricket on players' mothers, wifes and fathers???? Making fun has spilled into religion as well by the 'white teams'. All this is accepted as "PART THE GAME" but lord behold someone says "monkey"!

Color Of Money
by Jehan Mir on Oct 18, 2007 03:13 AM

Fifty years ago,you would not find a Black player in any of the basketball teams in USA.
Today, its a rarity to find a white guy on a national basketball team.

The promoters quickly found out what sells and what does not, thus eradicating racism.

There is no palpable racism in cricket to the exclusion of a player in any national team based upon race, color, creed in any of the cricket playing countries.

What is being referred to here is abusive conduct of spectators, usually drunk or occasional racial slurs and outburst of players under tremendous emotional stress, which can be hardly avoided or regulated.

All in all there is nothing to worry about.
Its color on money and not color of a player which counts.

We are also racist on the basis of religion , caste and language.

We just choose to ignore it.

VS...hmm we are "racist in terms of religion, caste etc"? Hmm...maybe all cricket boards are also "racist" "in terms of" 'talent'. Because selectors are prejudiced against people with no talent!

Cant understand idiots like you who use the word race for any advantage you can squeeze from society.

I'm sure he is talking about the behavior of spectators towards Symonds, which is totally unacceptable and extremely shameful. Agreed, Australians play aggressive brand of cricket, which involves quite a bit of sledging, but that does not mean fans can go over board and attack a player with racist remarks. Just imagine yourself in a foreign land surrounded by people who are hurling personal and racist insults at you - I'm sure you will feel humiliated and enraged like Symonds did.

Peace!

yes I agree. Those spectators should be jailed under various sections of Indian Penal Code.

The pictures depicting monkey gestures are ugly to say the least.

You are right VS, they not only be jailed, they should all be executed! And thats what you should do..when someone calls you a monkey, stab them!

(Dont know where these idiots VS-BS come from!)

What penal code says making monkey noises is punishable?

Ivatury, reg "Just imagine yourself in a foreign land surrounded by people who are hurling personal and racist insults at you", it happens all the time.

It happened to Gavaskar, it happened to Dhoni and Zaheer. but somehow these precious little princesses from Australia want flowers and pleasantries to be handed out to them while they are abusing Indian players, their families with "vulgar remarks" our religion, our celebration, our business and our life.
