RAHUL DRAVID
by Moses Godwin Joseph on Nov 16, 2007 07:16 PM

AN INGLORIOUS EXIT FROM ONE DAY MATCHES. IF HE HAD NOT PLAYED THE LATEST AUSSIE SERIES, BUT AN YOUNGSTER HAD PLAYED IN HIS PLACE, MOST PROBABLY, INDIA WOULD HAVE WON THE SERIES. PLS ANALYSE THE MATCHES AND SEE.

BUT IN TEST MATCHES, HIS CURRENT RANJIT TROPHY FORM INDICATES THAT HE IS LIKELY TO REGAIN HIS PRESTIGE. GOOD LUCK!

To Win there in SA, we dont have to loose here. Cant afford to have Dravid and Laxman in ODI's batting slowly. Give Double batting to Dravid when we play SA, and Aus and lets see what better he does.

Dravid had an career strike rate of 70 and you say that he is a slow player. Probably you are not aware but the career strike rate of both Dravid and Ganguly is almost same.

Your oppinion is 100% correct...

In outside India Rahul is at No.1 position as a batsman.....followed by Sachin,Gambir...etc...

In outside Without Dravid is highly impossible...

Dravid, most likely, will be back on the strength of his performances, Rohan. Dravid said in the press quite often that the selection process must be insulated from public opinion, and he would be the first to stop people from "supporting" him just because he is their favorite player or that he is a good man etc. In fact, his whole conduct after his axing reinforces the fact that if he ever makes a comeback to the team, he wants to be back on the basis of performances, not popular/political support.

There might be others who use their stardom for these purposes. But let's not insult Dravid by doing this. He will be back on merit, if the team needs him. If the team manages to do well without him, then so much the better. Let's enjoy the fact that India is winning and that we found a much better team even if Dravid is not playing.

As far as I see, the man (Dravid), always put India ahead of him. He wouldn't have given up the captaincy if he really wanted his own spot in the side. If we like him, we should also try to imbibe his qualities and his meticulousness in thought, whatever he does.

Beyond any doubts Dravid is thorough gentleman. Wish he regains his form and gets back even in ODI's. For sure he is a complete team man.

I don't think Dravid really lost form. Almost all his "failures", save a couple, came in the slog overs where he was trying to slog. The team was invariably in a good position and he wouldn't done the team any favors by hanging on for an unbeaten 20. Admittedly he did fail in 2 matches where he came at the top of the order, but that's that, just 2 matches. I don't think that is fair.

The fact that he never lost his form is demonstrated by the fact that he scored back to back 100's in the next 2 matches after he was dropped.

I am not saying Dravid deserrves to be in the team. There are only 4 middle order slots in the team and with Sachin and Sourav occupying the opening slots, we have 2 "openers" playing in middle order (i.e., Gambhir and Uthappa) on form. We also have 2 certainties in Yuvraj and Dhoni. So 4 slots occupied there. There is intense competetion for the last slot with Sehwag, Badrinath, Rohit, Karthik all jostling. It is difficult to fit Dravid in, despite his versatality in all positions from 3-7, unless Sourav retires/is dropped.

I personally think that is the way to go primarily because Dravid is a flexible batsman who can float up and down the order and is an ideal "senior" around whom the team has to be built around, also because we need experienced openers during the world cup, as that is an important slot with all the field restrictions and Ganguly certainly can't make the 2011 world cup. But people can argue anyway. Dhoni has to decide, finally.

I do not think that he really lost any form else how can he score double century in the first domestic match. He scored 30 odd runs in one match and then he wanted to accelerate since Dhoni was also playing slow and he lost his wicket. He came couple of times when more than 40 overs were already bowled. He came at number three position in one match but then got a unplayable delivery and got out on duck. However, he was third most successful after Tendulkar and Yuvraj in ten back to back ODI matches in England. Currently Ganguly has an average of 17 runs in last five ODI, 0, 39, 6, 39, 5. However, I do not think that Ganguly's supporters will agree that Dada is out of form.

Isn't Dravid boring in every aspect? Dravid is. He is a crab who pulls every other successful individual down and likes to stay with him.

Dravid declares the innings when somebody is playing beautifully on 194! Records don't help an individual, they rather help generations in Indian cricket. Team milestones need to be met first, I agree. Sachin Tendulkar has always put team first, then his records to serve the country even better. Do not pull Sachin down by being a crab in a bucket!

Hollow scores can't hide that he ran away from Captaincy against the Aussies, and deliberately scored low runs a to scuttle Dhoni's captaincy and India's campaign against Australia.

He has nothing to prove, we know what he is!!

We all know what he is. And we all know who scored low scores in the world cup deliberately. Dravid never went to press crying for the injustices meted out to him , unlike your 194 star who always cries sentimentally for even simplest of reasons.

Hi Sudhir, Dravid is atleast scoring in Ranji, where as Laxman is not able to put up big scores in the matches in which younger players are scoring tons. Can't his position be questioned in Tests.

Can't you really see the glaring contradictions in your statements. If he really "ran away" from captaincy, why should he "scuttle" somebody else by "deliberately" scorig low? Also I think you should be clear whether he "deliberately" scored low or he can score only against "depleted Ranji squads". If he cannot score against strong attacks he need not "deliberately" score low, he can score low naturally because he has no talent.

Whether you like Dravid or not, as player or person, is a personal decision. But atleast, I think, you owe it to yourself to tell yourself clearly whether your reasons make sense at all, and without any internal contradictions.

Excellent points Sarath! I have seen few fools like Sudhir Dhar in my life.
I will enjoy his comment for sometime- "Dravid gives up captaincy and tries to scuttle Dhoni's captaincy by deliberately scoring low against Aus (strong team); he can score high only against depleted teams and not against strong teams" -Sudhir Dhar Nov 16, 2007.

Sudhir Dhar, you have become famous, as an idiot, but famous nevertheless.

What a logic Mr. Dhar. He was the one who gave away captaincy, how come he would try to scuttle Dhoni's captaincy? And yes you are right..... we all know he's a gem, hs doesn't have to prove it.

Dravid has scored more in 2 Ranji games than Ganguly did in all the games he played before he ws recalled (including 2 first ball ducks to Zaheer)...

Anyway, there is nothing to prove - it will travesty if he was not selected for test matches. Dravid is still among the three best batsmen that India has produced (i.e., Tendulkar, Gavaskar and Dravid)

He is certainly a very good Test player compared to Ganguly and will definitely be selected for Test. even for ODIs ..in austrailia. We should ideally leave out Ganguly from Test.

But as far as ODIs are concerned Ganguly fractionally better than Dravid as an overall package..if their overall careers are to be compared...and much much better if recent form is considered.

Ganguly is also regularly dropping catches in ODI matches. He is very consistent in dropping catches. When asked, Kirti Azad said Ganguly had every right to drop catches since he was the Maharaja of Kolkata.
