This is a reprise of the early days of Chappell's India stint; thousands of impressive words and theories. Total cricket, multi-dimensionality, flexibility, neural stimulation... But the end result? Internal rancour and bitterness, a dud of a World Cup campaign, a coach who dumped on his own team. But so what if the theories failed and the words were empty, it was everyone's fault but that of Chappell and his theories. Coaching is not G. Chappell's core skill, never was, which is why no one in Australia will touch him. They won't say so openly (despite the professed Aussie tell-it-like-it-is candour) because like Gavaskar andKapil Dev in India, Greg Chappell is a sacred cow in Australia. Speaking is GC's core skill and there must be 100s of corporates who will pay good money for GC's brand of BS.

You are correct except that GC is not a scared cow in Australia really. Thats why they did not give him a full time job. He is just a batting consultant and not a good coach. He is a good speaker and poor listener and Frazer is not a qualified bio mechanist or sports scientist. His CV was available to see at the NCA a long time ago. He has only a marketing back ground and is BS. The RCA is just another money making avenue for them.

Chappel is first reqired at grassroot level
by Abhishek Thakur on Nov 18, 2007 01:26 PM

Nobody doubts chappell's cricket knowledge and credentials. The only problem has been a lack of undertanding of the Indian way of doing things and the local psyche, which is very different from the blunt, on-the-face australian way.
So it is actually a masterstroke both for the rajasthan cricket academy and Chappell himself. While younsters can adjust easily to his work ethic and tough attitudes and hopefully can become tough themselves, Chappell himself has the opportunity to test all his ideas and adapt them to suit the Indian conditions and tastes. This was not possible within the superstar heavy national team but it is certainly possible there.
Leaving such a hign profile assignment totally in tatters would hurt anyone's ego. Chappell has, unlike the norm with our country's super star, bitten the bullet in accepting a low profile assignment. It shows, along with other things, that he wants to reestablish his damaged credentials the hard way.

chappel needs to prove his credentials as a coach
by samir govind pai on Nov 17, 2007 01:38 PM  | Hide replies

I dont know how chappel's credentials as a coach are rated so highly , well when irfan was struglling with his pace or line or length he could not help , the bloke goes to the mrf academy comes back rejuvenated what was bio mechanics doing for him . look what a state munaf patel is left in . i guess it would be intresting to see what a chappel can do with blokes from rajasthan , , if six months time i would seriously like to see if any of them are knocking on the indian team door and on a more realstic option want to see if they can atleast compete witha karnataka , mumbai or tamil nadu ranji team ,

GC is a good speaker and a bad listener, thats why he did not last with team India. Frazer is a business associate of GC, and is not qualified in sports science nor is he a bio mechanist of any repute. The fellow had no job in Australia and we Indians give him employment based on total BS. Coaching = Money, thats all. The RCA has obstacle course, karate, boxing, cooking etc, how is that going to help cricket? This is all just a way to fool people and waste time while they collect their money in 3 years. Nothing good will come out of it. There will be players who make it and some who don't, and that has nothing to do with academy or coach. Its up to the player.

what serves indian cricektters better icl or IPl
by samir govind pai on Nov 17, 2007 01:24 PM

I guess it is very important for all associated with Indian cricket most importantly the fans to understand that the IPl and ICl are positioned completely differently . The ipl is a money spinner which talks about Russell Crowe , reliance and Vijay Malaya buying teams , they talk of signing the McGrath%u2019s , the warnes and high profile cricketers at the international level , but what about the domestic players . It is only the ICL which talks about domestic players they talk about signing a rakesh patel , dinesh mongia and ambati raydu and do not leverage on international stars . It is now your take as fans to decide which league would benefit Indian cricket . secondly it is not about money or expertise , but a blanket ban on players playing in the ICL against playing international cricket which gives the IPl an upper hand only as far as star power is concerned, that too based on monopolistic business practices, it is almost like saying that in the 1980%u2019s the fiat and ambassadors were the best cars on Indian roads . What good would it do Indian cricket if sachin plays against a McGrath or munaf Patel bowls to Jacque kallis, that is not exposure for these already tested cricketers. the Indian game will get strong and prosper only if a young hopeful like Rayadu or a out of turn cricketer with Indian selectors like dinesh mongia gets to face a bret lee , Mitchell Johnson or a rakesh Patel gets to bowl to Ricky ponting or Gilchrest . The case rests with all you fans to support t

Greg's (and Fraser) training methods - very interesting
by Madhusudhan N.R. on Nov 15, 2007 02:25 PM  | Hide replies

I read the full interview of Greg and Ian Fraser and it is impressive. The main thing is how they are facilitating the kids to improve on non-cricketing skills along with cricket to instill decision-making skills, as well as instinctive skills like juggling, to make the mind open up to newer experiences. The concepts are new-world and sound good. i hope the kids take full advantage and benefit from this exposure and experience. Fraser's theory about the outer game and inner game is interesting and Greg saying that the second learning, where you go beyond your limitations, to overcome and conquer shows lot of insight. Basically, this is what even spiritual growth means, opening up your mind to infinite possibilities, inner growth and the courage to tread the harder path. the Guru, as Greg says, can only show the way but cannot make you achieve. That has to come from within each of us. Excellent work by prem and team. No wonder Greg could not move much with the Indian team in the limited time and monumental egos, along with the old foggies to contend with in BCCI. lets hope Modi gives him enough time and resources to make a success of this endeavor, which will be good for Rajasthan and ultimately could be a pilot for rest of India....!!!

GC and Frazer are back in India for one thing - MONEY. They have nothing new to offer and as some one said, they are BS. Modi has no clue about the game anyway. The RCA will achieve nothing other than waste money and time. Some of the boys who have come out of it, hated the experience. They say the military style obstacle course, running 5K in central park, climbing the 8 feet wall, knuckle push ups and other boot camp nonsense has not helped their cricket improve. Ian Frazer is a guy with a marketing background and he is not a qualified bio mechanist or physical trainer. He had no job in Australia and is piggy backing GC, who is himself just a good speaker and not a great coach.

The Great Chappel Brothers!
by natraj tanjore on Nov 15, 2007 12:58 AM  | Hide replies

Irony of life! Two of the most unsporting, unscrupulous cricketing legends (cant take away their performances on the pitch!) bad mouth india at every opportunity but come to india shamelessly to earn their bread and butter. Greg Left india never to come back and now returns to work in a very low rank compared to his earlier stint as coach of india. Ian chappel talks about indian teams aggression and indian crowd forgetting his own behaviour (he opened his fly to the umpire on field) and his aussie crowd noballing murli dharan or calling SA players by derogatory terms! Come on rediff, dont waste your pages on charlatans of this kind, They were good cricketers, but very very bad gentlmen!

Look at what the kids got to say before you bad mouth someone. Second, Greg never said he will not come back to India. Dont throw your imgainations. Cricket is a team sport and you guys are naive enough and you dont know that we have got selfish players in the team.

The boys hated the experience. GC and Frazer are a load of bull and are not real coaches. Frazer is just a marketing guy who was never good at the game. GC is just living on past glory. Thats why they did not last with the Indian team.

Modi has no clue about cricket, he is only a marketer. GC is good at speaking, but a very poor listener. Frazer is a small time con man who uses fancy words pricked up from marketing books. He is not employable in Australia and is just piggy backing GC. They are here for the money, nothing else. The boys who have been through RCA did not enjoy it as there was less cricket and more obstacle courses, rope climbing, wall climbing, cooking and other nonsense. Maybe they are training to thieves or cooks as they may not make it in cricket.
