player on current form
by . on Nov 14, 2007 12:17 PM  | Hide replies

On current form, parthiv patle can b considered purely as batsman. The kind of form he has shown against all the opponents, and on all pitches, forget dhoni/karthik, even other regular batsman can not boast of it. He is scoring tons of runs (940 runs) consistently agianst all and scoring consecutive centuries. He is not 30-40 run player like others.
He has opened the innings and also keeping the wkts remarkably. What more u want!
once a novice parthiv, has proved his worth against Bolrs like Andre Nel. He opened the innings against Pak in Pak against Shoaib Akhtar and Sami scoring 60 odd runs. Also scored against bolr like Bret Lee in Ausi pitches, imagine how now-matured Parthiv wud do
Remove the prejudicial thinking against him, judge his performances objectively. when dropped he was hardly in his teens only and after that in last 3 yrs he is not given a chance at all.
Initially Parthiv fumbled in his keeping. but since then Parthiv has improved a lot, no doubt and he is just 22.
Not to compare, but only to quote example, Saurav was taken to indian team in 1992, then dropped n ignored for 4 years' humiliation, but bounced back in 1996 with style.
One more example. Harbhajan taken to India team, at the age of 17 years and subsequently dropped only to comeback afterwards to become a tormentor for Aussi.

My vote is for Parthiv's inclusion in the team as wicket keeper batsman in the middle order (say at No.6 or 7). Dhoni should be made captain and asked to only bat and not keep wickets, because being a main middle order bat, wicket keeper and captain will be a very demanding job. It was a retrograde and undesirable move on the part of selectors to appoint Kumble as captain. He could only take the wickets of tailenders in England where Zaheer and R P Singh had excelled. Perhaps Kumble may do well in the home series against Pakistan because although Pak has talented players like Younis Khan, Md Yousuf, Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt etc. they seem to not playing like a team. But is doubtful if Kumble has any role at all in Australia and South Africa, given the lack of variety in his bowling. People will jump and defend him, quote his past performances, his grit, his silence and gentlemanly qualities. But we have to learn to live with passing and dynamic realities, not live eternally in the past.

It is necessary that we groom youngsters like Piyush Chawla and also try out others like Ohja, Yusuf Pathan, Rajesh Pawar etc.

One way to go forward in Tests and blood newcomers is to play all new comers in the opening slots. After all they all have to face the new ball at some point in their Test career.Lt us test technique temperament in a trial by fire. Thus in the openin slots stand down after the first test Jaffer and Karthik who have been tested and proven. In one test Raina and Badrinath can open and in another Tewary and Rohit Sharma. On Indian wickets they shd cope with the new ball and it would be good try them out.

in fact parthiv is a good option as specialist batsman and opener. he has scored tons of runs recently across the world (940 as per ToI). at intnl stage also, he showed glimpses of his talent as a teenager while opening in pak against Shoaib/Sami and in audi bouncy pitches against Lee. if a teenager cud score like this, imagine now he wud perform after being matured, and on the current form.

In Australia only Kumble has some chance.I doubt if Harbajan can do well.An off spinner in Aus of Murali's class is finding it tough.Harbajan today is not in the Murali class.Amit Mishra looks good and needs to be groomed along with Piyush Chawla to take over a leggie spot which is needed.I think Kumble ' spin is in decline unless he adds new weapons to his armoury.Harbajan with too many ODI's has become flatter and easier to handle in tests. We need to groom an off spinner for the future also.Anyone in sight?Left arm Murali Karthik is good,Ojha is learning but Yuvraj can upgrade to be a genuine spinner in Test clas. The spin cupboard is looking weak.

Agree with you on most points. But Yuvrajs potential to become a world class spinner is being too optimistic.
If he could not become one so far with all those world class spinners around him in international cricket, I wonder how he can be groomed from now,and at this age.
It probably wouldmake sense to groom the Chawlas and the Ojhas....

yuv can b definitely considered in odi as spinner. but in test, v need 20 wkts to win. one cant take makeshift spinner.

Yuvraj is tall and is a left arm spinner. He has to reinvent himself as a classier spinner. If he does so he shd find a place in the team in India when 2 spinners are played. With his Test batting quite shaky,he will find it tough to break in.I agree he shd get a good run of 3 tests to prove he can hold his place.

Wrong recall....
by Kart on Nov 14, 2007 10:57 AM

What has harbajan done to deserve a test recall, he has not taken many wickets in odi's, taking wickets in test matches is the main thing and not containing runs.I don't think harbajan should be selected. He has not even taken three or 4 wickets in a match in odi's.
