selection Harakiri
by gopalan karthikeyan on Nov 11, 2007 09:07 AM

we don't need enemies. Our selectors conspire to snatch defeat from the hands of victory. What was the need to change a winning combination? Why drop Murali Karthik who brought us the only convincing victory against the world Champions Australia taking 6 for 29 and batted us to victory also. And for whom such a sacrifice an out- of -form Shewag. What is the need to drop a match winning bowler and select an out-of-form batsman who is never comfortable coming down the order.Shewag has been somehow accomodated to satisfy the quota system. This is India. Our Selectors know how to kill a winning combination

Bowling was not the reason for loss
by Ramelton Pandya on Nov 11, 2007 08:37 AM  | Hide replies

The real reasons for Loss -

Uthappa's dropped Catch
Dhoni's umimginative cpataincy and above all

Not capitalising on the base of 175 in 25 overs that was laid by Sachin. The culprits here are Dhoni and Uthappa again.

Now a simple maths question -

If we call for Sachin's exclusion on 1 or 2 failures, how many failures should we allow Uthappa. I fuess 20 because he is young. That also makes a better cricketing logic.

Main culprit is Sehvag and selected who choose him in the team.

I do agree your comment about Uthappa & Dhoni. We can compromise that Dhoni is an emerging captain, but what about Uthappa, he has just become a batsman who can play in 8th or 9th position and lacks consistency. When players like Subramaniam Badrinath, Suresh Raina, Manoj Tiwary are all waiting for a slot in team with their consistent and proved performances along with Praveen Kumar, the upcoming allrounder, why our team management including puppets(selectors) not ready to include them?

How much will Tendulkar score today
by Crick fan on Nov 11, 2007 07:14 AM

As he is the opener he sets the trend. How much will he score today? As per records he is better if we are batting first..

Foolish comment. Ganguly even now does not deserve his place. He is still there because of politics. It is a matter of time, let the Aussie series come, that will find out the men from the boys, just wait!!!!!

Its sad that a man who got us to win against Pakistan in Pakistan, a man who nearly took away in series against the aussies in Australia is being questioned about his place in the team.
Men are different from Boys and that is what Ganguly is, a man who has instead of politics to help him, has been a victim of politics time and again starting from his debut in 1990. Check the world of cricket and see how many men have come back after a six year break to be the most successful captain of a team.

Whether it is the President in a Country, a Chief of a Army or a Captain of a team, is leader is chosen for his leadership qualities and not for fighting sperforances alone.

Ganguly has given Indian Cricket the ability to believe in oneselves, the ability to trust Young talent to the hilt (Even Dhoni is a good example of this trend) and above all, he has been the most sucessful captain, a feat nobody is likely to break for quite some time.

Its Idiots like you who have a distorted view. Hang up your boots on this podium and go sulk in your lack of facts and knowledge.

Not one of Ganguly's young picks is today an obvious success (save Yuvraj who many people seriously believe is not suitable for a leadership role). Ganguly was perked up by the vastly impressive performances at various stages by Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman, and Kumble And the one off performance of Harbhajan against Australia). It is laughable to even suggest that those four guys performed "because" of Ganguly's leadership qualities.

Ganguly as a leader has his most obvious failing in that not one of his "finds" is an obvious leader. The serious lack of candidates today for captaincy is mostly because of the loss of a whole generation of players who failed to step up to the task in the Ganguly era.

2007 Stats

Dravid
31 matches 823 runs with an average of 37.40

Ganguly

28 matches 1076 runs with an average of 44.83

There is not much difference in the performance if you exclude matches against minnows. For
example, Ganguly scored 89 runs against Bermuda while Dravid came very late in batting
order and scored 7 not out. Also. against Ireleand Ganguly scored 73* and Dravid did not
get a chance to bat. Dravid could have improved his average by coming at number 3 instead
of coming lower in batting order. Bermuda and Ireland are not even official cricketing nations.

third class comment, gangli in the team not because of his performance but because of politics of vengsarka, dravid is alone and not any bankup, if he has not loose captaincy he must be in the team only, before ganguli dropped he was failed no. of times but he never leave his captancy, dravid is genious.

It is really irritating to hear this argument.

Indian cricket team must not be about guys helping each other to keep their places. It should be about picking the best possible 11. It might be argued that Dravid was dropped because of non-performance currently. But to blame him for the selectors dropping Ganguly then, on the back sub-par performances for almost 3 years running is stretching the point too much.

The bottomline is, if Ganguly deserves to be dropped then, he must be dropped because we have to pick the best 11. It is inexcusable if Dravid helped retain Ganguly just because he "helped" Dravid keep his place. The place in team must be earned by performances, not exchanged as favors between friends in tough times.

I can tell you one thing that Dhoni will bring Dravid back into ODI series when we visit Australia. We have already seen the performance of Indian middle order in the last ODI against Australia. Even SL team is struggling in Australia. Players like Dhoni always struggle on overseas pitches. Indian Middle order will crumble like pack of cards if play against Australia without including Dravid. Dravid ahs already shown his form by scoring double century against Ranji champions Mumbai.

I see arguments going on on averages. To be the best, the last 10 match average is what should count. Arguments about who is better - Ganguly or Dravid etc. are futile if we want to build an Australia beating team.

Ganguly's Record as batsman in ODI matches when he was Captain (source:cricinfo)

Season Matches Average

2005-2006 5 15.40
2004-2005 8 19.50
2003-2004 16 27.46
2002-2003 28 41.50

Dravid's record as batsman in ODI matches when he was captain

Season Matches Average

2006-2007 6 36.75
2005-2006 22 55.88
2004-2005 2 52.50
2003-2004 6 30.60

Clearly Ganguly was occupying his position in the team on basis of his captaincy from year 2003-2006. I think that it is a long period and hence there was nothing wrong in dropping him. There was no politics whatsoever. The same is not true in the case of Dravid. You do not drop someone for bad performance in a single series. He was third most successful batsman in last two ODI series in England and Ireland.

You are free to verify above information from cricinfo website.

It is true another specialist spinner is a luxury, but it is also true that we dont have genuine allrounder like ROBIN SINGH who always used to give vital breaks very often.
So look for some one...

as a young captain dhoni is making too many errors of judgement. luck favours him a lot now. i did n't see any reason why ganguly had to bowl 9 overs in the last match when sachin, yuvi and sehwag are better established change bowlers

generally speaking, we never try something odd and surpise. We go by always by cricket book..
Why not sewag or tendulkar bowl that odd opening
few overs... like deepak patel/solkar....
