Jaffer
by sa sa on May 28, 2007 03:29 PM

Jaffer is not a good opener but also not a bad opener at the same time. Opening is the most diffcult job to do when the ball is new and with a average of 36 in test cricket I think he is doing ok.

As long as Jaffer and Karthik have a good attitude and are willing to learn more, they have capability to become a reliable opening pair in future test matches.

the only players who can bring indian cricket out of this dilemma is a known and experienced match fixer like (B)azharuddin....bring him back to the helm and fix matches with bangladesh

he's the best we have

I don't think Jaffer is all that great an opener but unfortunately, he is the best we have right now amongst the tried and tested. We don't even have a regular second opener and Karthik is only being groomed to do that job. Gambhir plays too much with an open face and will not succeed when there is a bit of bounce or pace int he wkt but he can be a flat track bully like jaffer. I wonder if Badrinath can open cus he and Tiwari have been the finds of the domestic season for india and have bright prospects. Then again, opening the batting in test cricket is the toughest job for batsmen and no team in world cricket has a very settled opening combination. If your opener averages 40 against top 6 teams, then he's doing his job. Jaffer did well in WI and SA but has to be more consistent in providing starts and not throwing it away. His wasteful dismissal against SA cost us the second test there

Jaffer is pretty compact player but very susceptible to getting out LBW because he goes too far across and brings the bat late. Moreover he tries to play mostly on the onside and a good inswing bowler could get him out on slightly helpful wickets quite easily. He is very incosistent. In one series he will score a hundre and for the remaining 5-6 innings gets out below 20. But he is still better than most others.

why dont u go and bat instead? Sachin is definitely not playing like he played 10 yrs ago, but hes still invaluable and scoring runs. The biggest disadvantage for him is sachin vs sachin. Everyone wants him to score like he did 10yrs ago and though he scores much better than most other cricketers, u still ignore the fact.

You must be in out of your mind to compare Sachin and Sehwag with Jaffer. If Sachin and Sehwag are flop so is everyone else in the team. Jaffer has just scored 3 centuries abroad and that too after making a third comeback in 7 years. Jaffer is good but very incosistent, very susceptible to getting LBW. On faster wickets a good inswing bowler can get him out LBW easily. In a series he scores one hundred and then fails in the remaining 6-7 innings. Check his record. Yes Sehwag has failed in the recent 1 year but dont forget he scored 11 test hundreds (and most of them match winning ones) mostly abroad and in all countries. Check his major hundreds SA (121), Aus (195), Pak (309 and 254 n.o). Yes he has failed in the last year or so, hence he is dropped but dont downplay his earlier achievements and his match winning ability just because he is not performing in recent 1 year. And I dont think your comment on Sachin merits any response because everyone knows Sachin's achievements. Sachin may not be playing at his best (everyone knows that) but he is still better than most of the players that India has, certainly miles ahead of Jaffer.

Why You are jelous of mumbai.
Tell me one non mumbai opener better than him at present.
How such a club level player like Ishant sharma/Dinesh mongia/VRV singh etc come in to team(though they are not from mumbai). Then why you type of regional people not complain.
Fact is that being a mumbai player works for disadvantage as mumbai have always more than 6- talented players deserving place in team but in india yo can't give them chance to balance regional selection & hence even club level player from north/east will get chance. And no body complain for that.
Be indian, respect talent & donot be regional.

A true indian(not from mumbai).
