there is much more than cricket
by ajay rawat on May 05, 2007 02:59 PM  | Hide replies

i think the biggest mistake of our cricket is that we won the 1983 world cup and entered into a country which doesnot see anything beyond cricket. It would be better for the other poor sports discipline if the present cricket slump continues for anaother say 10 odd years. Cricket ab bas karo yaar

I think we should also promote and participate in adventure sports, and not get to emotional with the cricket.

If this is real then it is obvious that the players are more interested in money than winning for the country. If so then sack all the players who donot agree to this and take new cricters who are really interested in the game. Once you have worth money will defenitly follow you.

One more question HOTSHOT .. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR THE COUNTRY ? seriously ... how many of you actually avoid paying taxes and leave india for other continents like europe/america/australia . Its ok for you to make money via any and every means possible, but not ok for others to become financially sound by taking a risk in their lives.

WOW nice philosophy. Just find a well and jump in it and hope that no one rescues you, because people like you keep this country from reaching its potential.

Mr shetty, you will soon find an offer from team India, and these guys want such junk reasoning as convincing as yours and you will be paid handsomely for this, notwithstanding the competition from their own syndicates.

no thank you ... have been cricket free for the past 4 years ..yeah I dont follow cricket, because I am disillusioned with the depth of talent we have when compared to other countries.

See , we do not have talented players to begin with. Do you watch english county/australian county cricket. I think you should , and then watch the cricket level with our county( ranji trophy ) teams . The difference is almost like day and night.

We as a nation do not encourage kids to take up sports as their profession. Tell me , with such limited potential options what more can you expect ? PEople in India want miraculous results all the time ... just take plain statistics . How many medals do we win in the olympics ? it starts right there, we don't encourage kids to play sports, hence we reap as we sow.
You are buying a maruthi 800 or whatever it is called in india now and expect it to perform like a ferrari.

Just see how diverse the other countries are in terms of athletes, thats how you get a world class team . I agree with the poster above me, THE BIGGEST MISTAKE DONE WAS TO WIN THE 1983 WORLD CUP.

Just think about it , Kapil Dev is still the best fast bowler we had, yes we had Srinath, but he is a good fill in bowler at best. How come we don't even have 1 good fast bowler ? PS: just because they are in the team , doesnt make them a good fast bowler.
How come we never had a good wicketkeeping batsman till Dhoni, while rest of the world have been having great wicketkeeping batsman for good part of last decade ? Don't give me politics crap, because that bird will not fly. If someone is truly talented, he/she will shine regardless of politics.

See, all that i expect is that the Indian crowd behaves in a more mature/reasonable manner. Just whining and crying and protesting will never help. World class athletes just don't drop out of the sky. Consider yourself lucky to have had players with the caliber of sachin /kapil dev.
Because seriously , we shouldn't be getting talent like this for free.

There is a reason why Australians have a talent pool, THEY HAVE INVESTED TIME AND EFFORT IN IT.
Even if the kid doesn't make it to the team, his future is not in jeopardy, unlike India where if you don't make it big by investing time in a sport your life will be a struggle. Its a truly difficult choice for an individual to make choice like that in India, I am telling this because I know how it works.
I have seen plenty of families pressurize the kid into ot take up sports as full time profession , because of the repercussions of failure. So instead of pointing fingers and acting like 12 year old kids, think logically and try to make a difference if you can. Who knows, we might have a world class team within the next decade.

Great Point. All of us wants to become Engineers and Doctors because there is more money. If BCCI wants to reduce money in Cricket or for that matter any other sports, how will one choose Cricket as his profession.
Cricket is a professional game. SO I expect BCCI to treat all the players with dignity. By not paying enough, we are already putting Indian team under pressure.Cricket is a game, let the players enjoy the game. The results will be there.. pretty soon...

No Mr.Ahmed, Shetty has a point to say. The domestic cricket is in very bad shape. There are no coaches & no grounds and children are interested seeing their favourite cricketers in action rather than going and participating.

INDIANS ARE TRULY MAD !!!
by Suchin Shetty on May 05, 2007 10:38 AM  | Hide replies

seriously , this is getting out of hand .... I mean , did all of you escape the asylum or something ? Every post is a hate post .... what do you guys expect ? WIN EVERY FREAKIN GAME ? WIN the world cup with a sub par team ?

Let youngsters play --- say a few . 37 players in the last few years , well over any team in the world and 0 results. Do you even know what percentage of people actually play cricket fulltime ? By full time I mean dedicate their life on cricket ... Can you all even realise or comprehend the amount of risk an individual has to take when deciding to play a sport fulltime, ESPECIALLY IN INDIA ? I guess not , all you deskjob junkies sit and judge others .

Are you paying for the cricket team from your own pockets ? when was the last time you supported Indian athletes ? How come there isn't even 1 world class athlete out of a billion people representing and winning medals in the olympics? All that you people seem to think is that the indian cricket team has done some form of injustice to you all. DID ANYONE FORCE YOU TO WATCH THE MATCH ? IS ANYONE FORCING YOU TO FOLLOW THE TEAMS PROGRESS ? I guess not.

I get to read about limiting the money crickteers make via endorsements .... tell me something , of what consequence is to you who makes what ? ATLEAST THEY ARE EARNING WHATEVER LEGALLY ... We shamelessly elect curropt and immoral politicans , who easily consume more resources in one month than all out sports people do in a year.

When did you support the team ? ITs easy to support when everything is fine and dandy ... if you call yourselves true fans , support the team /players at their time of need ---when they are down on their luck , not kick them when they are down.

We as a nation will always be subpar because of this .All that we are good in is to kick people when they are down . IF you want a world class team, for christ sake do something , than just sit and whine and make yourselves look like bigger fools than you already are.

Do you even realize what percentage of Indian population are actually encouraged to play sports ? Tell me something, say your kid wants to become a 5000 mt runner, how many of you would actually try and pressurize them into becoming doctors/engineers .... I bet over 99.99% of you all would do that.

Instead of this meaningless blabber of who makes how much , why not actually start watching and following ranji trophy and other such matches ?This would attract more sponsors , which would mean more people would be encouraged to take up cricket or any other sport as their profession.

All of you resemble 10 year old kids who lost some match in some field and now pointing fingers at each other.SERIOUSLY GROW UP.

Just like our cricketers misjudged the significance of progress in the world cup, the same is with you. Nobody is complaining of team India as a whole. Everyone's ire is against a very senior player like sachin who had cleverly hidden all his failures in the meaningless statistics of his. Talking of corruption the syndicates speak for him and make deals for him. He should have been out 5 years back. Someone like sehwag despite his failures, had tried to give his best. The sheer presence of money and commerce and outweighed their priorities, the application, the attitude was never there. Playing to win the cup was long gone from their minds. Please do not try to rationalize by having a different perspective. Who cares about the world cup, it was their attitude that was disliked by one and all.

the point is ..... DO YOU HAVE A BACKUP FOR THE SENIORS ? A VALID BACKUP AT THAT ? This is why i quit watching cricket since last world cup...it became apparent to me that after ganguly/sachin/dravid we don't have any fillers. We didn't have even a wicketkeeping batsman at that time, and the only decent bowler " srinath" was retiring and kumble's injury was catching up with him.
What attitude of the senior players didn't you like ? Did the openly insult the Indian fans ? Did they throw stones and burn effigies of the indian fans ? They performed poorly and last time i checked, thats not a crime.
Replacing them with a vastly inferior players is worse than dealing with their attitudes. See BCCI is all about money, they don't care about you or me and certainly not care about the players.
Its a well known fact. Back in 1980's the BCCI officials used to stay in 5 star hotels and the players were made to stay in substandard hotels where they didn't even have access to proper hot water showers. Thats how BCCI was, and its well knitted into every players mind that no one will look out for them once they are out of the team.

What has BCCI done for cricket in India? Have they spent funds trying to encourage kids to take up cricket as their full time profession , like they should ? NOPE

So now, you have a minuscule talent pool that in its best day cannot even compete with the senior players. Sachin should have been out 5 years ago ehh , MIND I ASK WHO WAS THE PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT in 2003 world cup ? WHO WAS THE PLAYER WHO ALMOST SINGLEHANDEDLY got us within an arms distance of the world cup ?
Statements like this, completely nullify your logic. Say he should have been out of the team 5 years ago, mind telling me how come we haven't even found 1 REPLACEMENT since the past 5 years ? I think its time you open your eyes to the truth

Agree its all about wealth. Just check his scores in the last world cup, except for a shoaib bashing and a couple of huge scores against teams not performing at par, he choked in the finals. Please recall the test match between India and Pak in chennai, we were around 30 odd runs away and he choked. The point is how are you going to judge talent unless somebody seriously tested as sachin two decades back. Yes, I agree the infrastructure is bad, in fact worse. For the kind of money cricket generates it can become a self sustaining Industry. We had those giant screens bought very lately that too in the second hand market. Stands so poor in the stadium. Your observations are profound in the lack of talent pool, but, you should also agree the selections are made with the photogenic face of the cricketer in the mind. Remember that Baroda cricketer who tried to bribe Kiran More the then selector to get into the National B team, know why, he had a very compatible face for the screen, and a reasonable player. I do watch cricket, and it is too early to say I have ceased watching the game. I was watching with a knowledgeable group which had a couple of players of Ranji trophy. One observation they use to make constantly was how smart the player was and how likable he is, mind you, one of them was probably was a contender to get into the national team. Do you follow me, now. This is crass commercialism. Why Mr.Sachin is not of the team, the sole reason is his commercial interests are guarded by the BCCI, having said that, BCCI also gains by protecting players. I condemn the BCCI first and their rooting for certain players for wrong reasons.

is board not cheating players?
by SURYAPRAKASH TATA on May 05, 2007 10:32 AM

IS THERE ANY DOWNFALL IN INCOME FOR THE BOARD FROM INDIA'S WORLD CUP FAILURE? NO IS THE ANSWER. BOARD IS GAINING SAME AMOUNT IRRESPECTIVE OF WIN OR LOSE SITUATIONS. SO IS IT FAIR ON THE PART OF THE BOARD TO REDUCE MATCH FEES TO PLAYERS LIKE THIS. IT IS NATIONAL SAME BOARD TRYING TO MAKE MONEY AT THE EXPENSE OF THE PLAYERS POCKET. INDIAN CRICKETERS ASSOCIATION SHOULD APPROACH ICC FOR SPECIAL RECOGNITION AS INDIAN TEAM AS ALL THE REGIONAL PLAYERS WERE PART OF THE ASSOCIATION.

PLAYERS SHOULD NOT SIGNE SUCH AND DECLARE THAT THEY WERE PLAYING FOR THE COUNTRY HENCE THEY WOULDNT MIND TO PLAY FREE RATHER THAN THESE INSULTED MATCH FEES.

there is absolute farce going in the BCCI.Pawar is worse off than Dalmiya. How can you not pay the players and expect them to perform.I mean how many of us can really work in a job when we are underpaid or not paid at all.

This comedy of worse sorts that at the one hand BCCI is clamping down on players and criticising ICC then what the hell their own performance as an administrator is???

player contract drama - a big hoax
by Narayanaswami Krishnan on May 05, 2007 08:19 AM

to me it all appears to be a big hoax, a bukwas being played by a greedy, corrupt politics dominated bcci who are spineless to enforce discipline and by a set of greedy, corrupt, spineless shameless players who are bothered only about the money they get, who can perform only on the ramp ad not in the field.

if the bcci was really interested in the long term good of indian cricket they should have come out with a just and reasonable player contract and insisted on the players signing the contract before the start of the coaching camp so that whoever signs goes on b'desh tour and whoever refuses are thrown out.

enacting this drama just two days beore the tour is about to start stinks of politics.
