Even in an earlier occation former BCCI president Mahendra said that BCCI is not bound by govt regulations and BCCI team is not indian team. Now, this board instead of supporting the bill which will take the game to every nook and corner of te country says it is detrimental. I wonder how that can be the case when the game is going to have an larger audience and can only become more popular. It is high time BCCI stopped supporting the corporates and encourage the game more.
UTTER NON SENSE! IT MAY BE DETRIMENTAL TO THE PERSONAL AGENDA OF THE BCCI CHAIRMAN AND HIS HAREM,BUT DEFINITELY NOT TO THE INTEREST OF INDIAN CRICKET.IT IS ABOUT TIME THAT INDIA HAD ITS OWN CRICKET TEAM RATHER THAN LET A PRIVATE BODY MASQUERADE AS OUR NATION.
It will reach a point where no broadcaster will want to buy the rights. When that happens no one will be watching the Cricket. DD may be able to cover matches in India but no one will be able to watch matches in foreign soil.
Govt collects tax from the people to provide better community facalities. If the majority opinion is to use the tax money to show cricket on television, govt should obtain rights from Nimbus by paying for feeds. Free telecast wont last long. Like ESPN pulled out NIMBUS will pull out.

the statement is not a matured one.. there are number of broadcasters... and they know they have to buy indian rights if they want to be successful in cricket broadcasting... the only affect could be lower bidding rates... and what you say... there was no broadcasting before these private players came in... ??
and dont b silly... govt is not going to run after buying sports rights... is this the only thing left to do for them????

com'on Broadcasters will make money from advertising...And India is a big nation tooo many people so any broadcaster will take the rights and share it with DD.. so our govt is smart.Atleast everybody will be able to watch the cricket matches.

If the "overpaid few hundred players" are less important.... then how are we common people gonna enjoy the game of cricket ?? :hmmmm:

wtever.... if general public cannot see the matches then their is no meaning of collecting revenues.... sports are for people and not a business to mint money.... and truly, if BCCI want to run it as a business unit then it should rename from "Team India" to "Team BCCI"... I understand that money is required for development of game, but can't BCCI get the relaxation for indian public by sacrificing some of its revenue and distributing its rights on lower rates....
Why dont these people understand just simple thing... most of our population live in rural areas and they dont have connectivity for Cable TV. Please care for them..and let them watch too...
If DD was so keen on protecting common men's rights.. then they would have bought the rights through Prasar Bharti...They didnt want to bid and pay BCCI and wanted to have the feeds free of cost from whoever won that deal.. DD has done this to ESPN in past, now its Nimbus's turn..
RE:DD
by sanjay sharma on Mar 09, 2007 05:11 AM
see...DD is not as much a big revenue generation company as other private broadcasters.. and can not big for such a big contract... but obviously if it gets the shared feed, it may share its revenue with private channel.... but this is BCCI who has to have this clause in the contract at first place... this will lower the bidding price bit, but that should not harm looking at the big money its making.. this hopefully will be acceptable to all...
Nationalise BCCI the highest cricketing authority in India, its more corrupt with politicians again and let govt pay crickets directly telecasting all matchs to general public free on air....
I guess i understand the sentiment of the country and its passion for cricket, but i dont get the business structure, if i were the owner of nimbus and i have paid 3 quarters of 1000 crores for exclusive rights and the govt expects me to share my signal with dd for free then hell with the government i might as well pull the plug and then dd will have to use their money and infrastructure which is the poorest in the world to broadcast matches...i am sure the passion for the game will surely die if i have to see the games on dd

Bottomline: The govt should not have sold the cricket rights to nimbus and put close to thousand crores in their coffers when they wanted the whole of india to watch it and have it given free to DD. why did they not give it to dd free the first place instead of selling it? they wanted to have the cake and eat it too!! shame on indian gov..gurudatt puranik

Your sentiment is correct, just one small thing:
The rights were sold by BCCI and not the govt. a you pointed out.
I agree that DD should be made to pay Nimbus for sharing the feeds. Otherwise, DD should give all the profits generated from the feeds to Nimbus. They paid for it, they should make profit.
Nothing is free in this world, the common man has to pay taxes just to have a govt. (which by the way, keeps making decision againt the common man anyways) so why should DD get anything free. Specially since (1) Nimbus paid such a hefty sum for it and (2) DD will broadcast ads and generate revenue from it...
The bunch of jokers & herd of hawkers in Indian cricket are beating the Danda in vein when the Anda is already crashed in their cash boxes. Well Done GOI, you seldom care about common man, but at least this action turn out to be good for billions.

do anyone think it is in the common mans interest, pay das munshi his share, this bill could get rolled back with retro effect, and govt may pay for the past errors while receiving the signals. People have to comeout and hang these corrupt politicians.
The government did the right thing. No noveau riche ( read right holder) has the autohrity to fiddle with the popular sentiment. The terrestrial rights are indeed the exclusive domain of the DD and BCCI has no legal rights to part with it for money. To hell with the private Broadcasters and their perceived rights. The BCCI\'s observation that its going to affect cricket in Bharat - our Holy Motherland -is thoroughly misplaced. Seemingly BCCI has got other agenda than promoting cricket. Thank You I&B and the Government. Great law.
