Nimbus DD Row.
by sumit mathur on Mar 21, 2007 03:51 AM

DD must share 80% of the profit of its operations with NIMBUS for getting the feed. Then who can spend money and wants quality can stick to Nimbus , others can go over to DD.
What say?

Silly government
by me critic on Mar 09, 2007 03:29 PM

Cricket is of national importance...lol...does that mean electricity, water, infrastructure, connectivity are not of national importance? Our minister was resigning over the issue with Nimbus..how many times he has shown the same fervor over other burning issues? Any answers?? I am sure he is licking a.. of Sonia Gandhi and that is why he is there where he should not be...rogue indeed!!! How can he advocate sharing of feed free of cost with PB? Does he know anything about business?

How to handle this issue
by True Indian on Mar 07, 2007 10:53 AM  | Hide replies

I feel, Since, Nimbus has bagged the contract for telecast for BCCI matches, it should be given that right exculsively. Now the point comes, what about rural india, where cable connection is not abvilable or Private players dont have reach. If Prasar Bharti has taken that responsibility to telecast in rural india, then hats off to them. But at the same time, Nimbus has paid hefty fees for telecast rights. The only option available is Nimbus should give its telecast feed live to Prasar Bharti, so that it can be telecast in rural india without any delay. But mind it, Prasar Bharti has to telecast it with Nimbus ADDS too... That will benefit Nimbus in giving free feeds. Prasar Bharti wont have any rights to halt, manage feeds in any way. they have to telecast these feeds as it is basis. so its win win situation for both of them.

But nevertheless, Nimbus should not have put the feed as costly as three times than other players. It clearly shows that they are very greedy. They probably don't remember the Hen and Golden Egg story.

Nimbus made mistakes
by Saibaskar Parthasarathy on Mar 07, 2007 09:10 AM

Nimbus made the mistake of pricing themselves too high which made their feed too costly for cable operators to beam. I am not a great fan of DD getting live feeds free of cost. We know the kind of crap DD use to telecast before private broadcasters came into the picture. The solution could be a govt regulation asking BCCI to sell rights to broadcasters who are free to air (FTA). This will force sports channels who earn both thru commercials and thru per-viewer charges to be more reasonable. Since set-top box could become mandatory all over india in near future such a move would help important sporting events being hijacked by sports channels which do not reach all homes. But dont support DD stealing all the feeds free of cost coz apart from money that the sport recieves the quality DD dishes out is pathetic to say the least

cricket has become a TV Ad platform
by vipul saxena on Mar 07, 2007 05:24 AM

The game of cricket ahs taken a backseat. It has become a showcase for indian companies showing ads before the over, between the over and in every break. Even the match between bangladesh and zimbabwe has hundreds of indian ads.Batsman friendly pitches and short boundaries enhance India Team performance and Tv audience. and 8 non test playing weak teams means more ad slots and more money. The feed should be shared with doordarshan as doordarshan sports also need money because thye show OLympics, asian games, commonwealth games and so many events of international importance. Will Nimbus or any other private greedy channel will ever show other games. If we dont show other games, those games will die. India has only 1 medal in last olympics, all other sports are dying in India because of money in cricket through advertisements

Let the players play in the name of Nimbus
by Senthil Kumar on Mar 07, 2007 02:58 AM  | Hide replies

Why are the players claiming they
play for India??

If they play for India, let every
Indian see the match in DD1 for free.

Alternatively players can play for
"Nimbus" and they don't have to
share the feed with DD1.

For e.g.
Match would be called
Nimbus Vs Australlia

hi senthil
the players have nothing to do with the telecast, just think if DD gets the rights will it share the feed with other channels.earlier DD used to telecast all the matches but they did not pay anything to the board.this is a commercial world ,we indians r still want everything free without working or paying for it.nimbus i feel is the one who has invested such huge sums has every right to ensure it earns a decent profit and it is ready to share but the conditions it put are reasonable enough for DD to accept.

spoken like a true socialist, you need a dose of practical economics, nothing comes free of cost in life, haven't you heard or read about no free lunch principle. Look cricket like soccer or American football is a commercially thriving sport, television rights is the driver of those revenues. Everywhere revenues from TV rights are used in improving the facilities at the stadiums, investing in grassroots dvelopment(junior cricket). TV rights accounts for 70% of BCCI's revenues. It is a high time that idealistic socialists like u learn something from the Chinese politicians on how to transform a socialistic mindset to a more market oriented style of management to make the economy vibrant and envy of the world.

In American Football each team has a private
owner. Whether it is 49ers or dallas cow boys.

Here they are playing in the name of India.
Government is the owner.

Ticket sales/Ads are more than enough to cover
the cost of running the match and TV telecast
costs.

Sorry to differ, cricket is not owned by the Govt of India unlike other sports cricket does not have grants sanctioned at any level, only benifit they get is BCCI is exempted of taxes. Anyway passing this type of judgement is like asking people to pay 75 to 80% of taxes or work for free would you like to do that? Nimbus is paying such hefty sum to BCCI for it thinks it can make more than what they would invest. The plans are based on the terms and conditions and the situations prevelent at that time if those conditions change so would profits. So naturally they have full right to withdraw, for this is not a natural cause that would diminish their profit.

dear senthil,
I dont get any point of blaming nimbus for this. The main culprit is our great BCCI, who has made cricket a medium to make money. after paying such a huge money nibmus naturally ask for high price for the telecast rights and the adds. now it is completely onto nimbus whom to share the telecast rights.
We can think it this way, if Indian Govt giv Taj Mahal on lease to some rich persons, then it is upto him to decide whom to allow to see Taj Mahal.
Finally, bcci shuold have made the contract in such a manner that the interest of all cricket lovers is taken care. But who will make them understand, they are purely interested onto making money.

Its nice they quit. their coverage is awfull, commentry drab, and they show 5 balls per over.
Let ESPN-STAR/TEN SPORTS/ZEE SPORTS take over. that will be better for all. They will also negotiate with BCCIabout sharing feed with DD.

On one hand govt talks of level playing field for PSUs and Pvt corporates, on the other,it tries to twist the arms from behind in the form of legislations and RESERVATIONS.Govt. still expects billions of FDI in this country!!! Its high time for our politicians to distinguish between Patriotism and Hypocrytism.

i understand that poor people should also be able to watch cricket. but either BCCI has to reduce the price of the package and slash their astronomical profits or DD should try to invest some money in the venture , instead of playing the 'common man' card everytime to grab rights. between these greedy organizations, private entities like Nimbus are getting crushed. Another thought, BCCI should show more responsibility with their enormous funds. Why can't they help out other needy sports departments? They should stop acting like a corporate powerhouse trying eliminate competition and hike their earnings!
