Depleted? My Foot!
by Sameer on Jun 20, 2007 03:46 PM  | Hide replies

What the heck do you mean, 'India play against a "depleted" Irish squad on June 23 in Belfast'.

Rediff please for God's sake stop this nonsense. Ireland has managed to show the world they are dark horses. In the Irish conditions they might be even worse for the Indians who fear pace and swing bowlers.

I hope that they 'do' deplete us instead and we stop sending Dad's Army teams to play...make it slaughter!

Vishal... We can make out from your comments that u are a great fan of Ajit Agarkar but what is wrong in Sameer making his own comments? Do you think we have only 3 bowlers in Balaji, Nehra and Mohanthy... these guys are not even playing domestic cricket then why do you want to include their names? Dont jus come out with any CRAP and u might not agree but Ajit Agarkar is just a big CRAP. He is in the team thanks to Mumabi lobby. Irfan would have been in the team but unfartunately he is not playing for Mumbai. Remember why Zaheer was considered in the Indain team? No prizes for guessing.

Yes, we know Mumbai has won many Ranji's. But dont forget that half of what BCCI earns goes into Mumabi's kitty and with that infrastructure its no surprise for winning. Even without any back up from BCCI... we could produce playes like Dravid, Srinath, Venki, Kumble, Sunil Joshi, Utthapa to name the few. And imagine what the results could be with lil help from BCCI.

Srinivas ji, why cant u guys stop fighting. Are u in the interest of Indian Cricket or your state's interest ?. Please understand, the team thats on the tour is the best we have from the bunch and I completely agree with Vishal and Vaibhav, that Ajit Agarkar is certainly better than Nehra/ Balaji or Mohanty or for that matter many others. Yes, I buy your point that he has underperformed but then who has not in this team. Its time to move on and support your team. For all you know Ajit Agarkar might do wonders in this one day series. Lets hope that India wins all 5 matches on the short tour to Ireland & Scotland

Dear Mumbaikar
You were beaten blue and black by a team lead by Mohammed Kaif in last year Ranji Trophy championship. |And they won also. As revenge this year BCCI dominated by Mumbaikars they are not selecting Mohammed Kaif.

Dilip Vengsarkar carries the BCCI Flag
by Ramesh Kapoor on Jun 20, 2007 08:42 AM

There is no denying that Vengsarkar with an open umbrella provided by Sharad Pawar gets to flood the Indian Cricket team with Mumbaikars. It is not a fact that regionalism exists in Indian Cricket, just as in politics. We should beware of those who fly one kind of kite, for they are bound to lose the kite in wilderness!

by deepak kotnis on Jun 20, 2007 05:34 AM  | Hide replies

why does every one speak when mumbai players are selected, players are selected all over the country and also from mumbai, infact mumbai keeps winning ranji trophy and still there were ocassions when not enough players were selected from mumbai, there is no politics in selecting mumbai players, politics is when u select players like nikhil chopra, aashish kapoor, noel david, sujith somasunder, dodda ganesh, aakash chopra, sada ramesh, and the list is long..

Well ! If you are picking from the bunch of rejected players dont single out only non-mumbaikar players. There are other players like - Abey Kuruvilla, Paras Mhambrey, Amre (he also played for mumbai for some time), Sairaj Bahutule, Amol Mazumdar, Lalchand Rajput etc

And of the players you have mentioned -
Nikhil Chopra was a very economical bowler in ODI, useful tailender, good fieldsman at deep. He lost hsi chance because of politics only and suggesting his name in betting etc Ramesh and Akash Chopra are two of the most stable openers India got in last 10-15 years but they couldnt be groomed or directed properly (Why?? - maybe politics again). If you look at Somasundar's record in national scene he was one of the most consistent performer and run getter but didnt get enough opportunities (as compared to Jaffer who no doubt is not a bad batsman but score 1 high ininngs after sequence of low scores !! but getting enough opportunities to be more stable).

Yes Mumbai has a strong ranji team but look the infrastructre that they have and support they get from the BCCI, selectors etc. Most of the people move from different region to mumbai to try to get selected for ranji and increase their chances of getting in Indian team.

Other zones also have good natural talent which get lost or not properly groomed so many times because of lack of focus in those regions.

Thanks

in past players from mumbai like amol muzumdar, salil ankola, ramesh powar (now he gets his chance)are not selected for that dirty politics ramesh powar is better player than nikhil chopra any given day.but he selected .& in ranji most stable batsman in past & current is wasim jaffer & first check the record books & then compare Betwwen jaffer & somsunder.amol muzumdar is gotone of the most triple hundred in domestic circuit.sharad pawar r selected from last one & half year .before s.pawar why bengal are win trophies becoz j.dalmiya is the boss.& mr.desi bhai & nobody come from out side .if u want player for ur states take it from mumbai.

God !!
You are telling me that Ramesh Powar is better batsman ( I dont think he ever scored in double figures) and a good fielder (you must be joking !) that Nikhil Chopra (am taking his name for comparison sake only!)

Dear Vaibhav, ODI needs much more -
Agile fielding, good catches results in lots of run saved which in the end can be the key. On the top of that if you have a good tailend batsman who can support settled batsman then his worth is more.

I am just comparing (Ramesh Powar is a very good spinner but more useful in tests where he can be hidden in field and not expected to score runs!)

Point to pinder is Jaffer is a good sound batsman but only when he was given enough chances which raised his confidence level. Were these chances given to somebody like Amarjeet Kaypee or KP Bhaskar or Rajender Goel (highest wicke taker in Ranji) to name few?

Though Amol was naturally talented but his form was always inconsistent ..why you would take somebody who was dropped from even mumbai ranji team (only recently he was selected again and now captaining on the basis of seniority!!)

Dear Vaibhav, In case you are not aware many of the players come to mumbai at very young level and start playing at under 17 or under 15 level. I have stayed and watched mumbai cricket for 5 yrs.

Point is - Ofcourse they have a good team and players but they have good support and infrastructure..

Thnx

Jaffer got his chance after a long time and he grabbed it by scoring centuries on foreign soils. Kirti Azad and Ashok Malhotra could not score in a single innings yet toured the whole world and are now experts for doordarshan. Delhi, Calcutta Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore all get equal share from BCCI as Mumbai and yet give less results. Zaheer got into indian team coz he played for Baroda. Had he played for Mumbai he would not have got selected.

you are in a wrong thread then, we were discussing some thing else. I know my cricket very well and enough to know that recent test wins that india got on foreign tours (WI, SA, Pak, Zim - outside subcontinent) is mostly because of contribution of junior players or players like Dravid/Kumble not Saching/Agarkar (figures always dont do justice)...

And i am not Mumbai players or Sachin hater...

Oh i cudn't agree you more desi bhai... Rightly said... By the looks of it this guy "deepak kotnis" think/knows only about mumbai cricket. Boss noel david was a superb fielder along with able bat, they just dont get selected just like that. As is it is lobbying is more in Mumbai team, and the tradition continues till they get into Indian team... This bugger sachin shud get out of the team first, then only team will improve. Dada will be shown door after this england/ireland tour(no history/records is going to rescue him now). Laxman is always better bat than ganguly, but this guy has no bakcers. anyways all the best to Indian team.

Ganguly is also taken inspite of his incapability to play in match winning conditions and his political nature. Do you think politics is not there in selecting Ganguly???. Selecting Agarkar is not at all a bad idea while selecting the useless people like Ganguly.
