What about India ?
by VIJAY SARADHI on Feb 28, 2007 01:54 AM  | Hide replies

Losing couple of matches right before WC-2007 doesn't make Australia a weaker team. Aussies managed to score well over 320-330 without Gilli & Ricky

Looking at the recent performance of Indian team (outside sub-continent), does anyone think we have a chance? Imagine Team India%u2019s score with out %u201Cso called%u201D in-form demi gods(Saurav, Dhoni (or) Sachin, Dravid)

what ego these aussies have.after the recent defeats what makes them the favourites? after having lost so many times as captain hussey is just trying to save his face by making such comments.other teams are as equally favorites to win as the aussies.

At present, all countries are a threat to Australia.
Hussey should not have earmarked his threats.
Let the Aussies win against Scotland & Holland first.

Lost so many times? they have a win rate of 75 percent while the other teams have the reverse ,and hussey is no capt any more ,any ways thats the fear the aussies have instilled in every one so cant blame people for doubting the aussies.

Probably the Most Open World Cup in the last few decades
by Sriram Kamalapuram on Feb 27, 2007 09:08 PM  | Hide replies

This is probably the first world cup after decades where any of the top 6 teams can win the Cup provided they paly consistent cricket over the entire period of 4-5 weeks. This makes for an exiting proposition.

Me thinks the best fielding and bowling side will take the honours. In one-day cricket, it is all about saving crucial runs, taking brilliant catches and infliciting crucial run outs.

While the Sub-continent teams do have a good chance to do well, all of us suffer from poor fielding and poor bowling at the death. Sri Lanka is slightly better in this regard.

South Africa is over rated as they tend to struggle on slower wickets. They are ranked No. 1 more due to the Aussies losing than they winning anything worthwhile outside S.AFrica. Beating teams like India and Pakistan on Fast Wickets is not a great achievement as we and our friednly neighbours have always been very meek guests in S.Africa.

But it would be foolish to write-off the Aussies just because they lost against New Zealand with a virtual half-team. Remember the last Ashes Series where they white washed England after having lost the 2005 series. Aussies have this knack of coming back very strongly especially when their egos are hurt. So, let's not write them off.

However, let us hope that our Men in Blue will pull off a coup one more time.

Yes the proposition we have here is really exciting. Every fan in every country has some thing to look forward for.

And the Aussie set back recently makes it even more interesting as people are now trying to guess the Aus performance.

And at the same time, as an Indian fan I have the best to look forward to. With the team looking as good as it can look with the weakest link, bowling, looking better and the batting looking to fix previous issues. Yes fielding is not in the plan of things but the fact that we hope to make it up with our batting and expirence sells as good as a masala movie.

India has always been the best seller of cricket hope they dramatise this tornament even further and set it up for its fans, nicely.

Good luck India!

who will win WC in cricket?
by Sudhakar Shanbhag on Feb 27, 2007 09:04 PM  | Hide replies

Hussey does not know how to estimate or is it Asuies ploy to put opposition under pressure! I agree SA and NZ have potential to become world champs. But SL and PAK - no chance. But one never know in cricket. We can not rule out India. We have depth in batting and all are in form.

I know...right? I dont understand how he could not mention India which he mentioned pak and SL.
But well I think, Hussie, being a batsmen, looking to aggressive bowling teams to be the tough ones and have a single dementional view.

Or may be he truely thinks batting teams like India and WI are easier to tackle.

Either way may his views change by the end of this tornament.

No Way for Aus
by TRINATH A on Feb 27, 2007 05:54 PM  | Hide replies

Aus is full of threats. They have fiddled, and found victories by luck, and due to lack-lusture oppositions. Need to lose it in Super Eights. Championship isn't someone's private stuff, and can't be kept long, unless some kind of blood is put into it.

Australians were nonchalant and adamant, aggressive and un-meek.

Hi Hussey,
good luck mate.... You may be dreaming, probably when you said that SA, Sri Lanka, Pakisthan and New Zealand are the threats to Australia. You have just included New Zealand just because they have beaten Australia even after making huge scores.(u have even forgotten England, Even though Australia being defeated convincingly by them and think about West indies, who have beten u regularly.)you may face so many surprises like you hadf in New Zealand...So prepare for the worst mate...Dontbe like John Buckanan.....All the 8 teams have fair chances to win the world cup

Hi Folks! I don't think we should read too much into what Mike Hussey says but I don't think we should get too carried away with our Team either. Agreed that New Zealand is not as great as it is made out to be. Stephen Fleming must be the only long-standing captain not to have any major tournament and I am sure he will enter some record book for the same.

But before we point fingers at other teams, Please take a step back and check our overseas record since Kapil's departure. It has been pathetic to say the least. While Sri Lanka and Pakistan continue to win Abroad especially in England, W. Indies and New Zealand. We have not won anything worthwhile in a long history of 2 decades and that does not paint a pretty picture.

It is good to be patriotic as we all are but to be realistic does not mean that we don't like our team or we don't want our team to win. We are simply not good enough on Foreign Soils and do we need anymore proof after the recent West Indies and South African tours especially in the One-dayers???

Nothwitstanding the above, let's hope that our team atleast reaches the last four. That will be some saving grace

Well you dont have to be so pesimistic either. As you said we have had a bad record outside but at the same time we always did well on big tornments like these even if it were outside.

Came to the finals in 2003wc in SA where we probably have the worst ODI stats.

So i think I would give more weightage to it and together with some patriotism and some good will to the players who are showing promise we are expected to expect a little more from our team.

But realisticly still we have a little bit to go.

Good luck India!

OVERCONFIDENCE?
by RAHUL SOMANI on Feb 27, 2007 05:28 PM  | Hide replies

The most funny thing in the whole article is that hussy doesn't name INDIA as the probable world cup winners.
Too Mch Overconfidance is the main hardle between Aussies & the CUP

RE:OVERCONFIDENCE?
by Sriram Kamalapuram on Feb 27, 2007 08:46 PM
Certainly seems like Overconfidence for every Indian cricket fan who wants his team to win. But honestly, do we really have the team that can win the World Cup. Our best chance was in 2003 when Zaheer blew it for us in the very first over. IT is these small things that Australia and some times South Africa does which make them win critical matches.

However, we don't agree about New Zealand and Pakistan as being a threat for anyone. Like India, Pakistan has been a lousy team outside pakistan but if their fast bowlers get away by taking loads of drugs they may then be a real threat :) :). And the PCB will take all steps to ensure that those drug additcts get on to the plane to West Indies. As far as New Zealand is concerned everybody knows Stephen Fleming's great record of being a Perpetual Captain who wins almost nothing every time they walk onto the field. Beating a half-side Australian side is not a mean achievement by doing so at home and by a wiskher in two of the three matches does not make them favourites.

It looks that you are feeling too much pain because Hussey mentioned the name of Pakistan did not mention India. My dear look at the progress of both countries, out of their den, for the last do decade ....... empty vessels thunder much....

australian team
by sunny joseph on Feb 27, 2007 03:01 PM

i am surprised that jason Gillespie is not included in the team or discarded wihout any reason from the team. the same thing happended to damien fleming soemtimes back. It was Damien Fleming helped Australia reach the final in 1996 by bowling courtney Walsh when West Indies were about to beat Asutralia in the semi. In 1999 to Damien Fleming passed a ball under arm intelligently to run out the South African batsman when Soufh Africa was about to beat Australia.I did not hear much about Damien even though he was good performer. Now see Jason. He is very good player and still he is not in the team.
