what a waste of time
people discussing about stuff that helps no one, not even the country, with such intensity

have some sense people, and instead of analyzing unnecessary things, use the time to do something effective and constructive

WHY ARE YOU GUYS DEFENDING HIM SO MUCH
by sumaiya wadiwala on Feb 03, 2007 07:34 AM  | Hide replies

EVERYONE IS DEFENDING AN ARGUMENT THAT DOESNT NEED TO BE DEFENDED....WHY R YOU MAKING THE INDIAN TEAM LOOK LIKE A BUNCH OF CLOWNS WHEN THEY ARE NOT...DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THE 2001 TEST SERIES AGAINST AUSTRALIA...THERE WAS NO KARTHIK AND WE DID FINE...HE IS NOT THE MOST EXCELLENT PLAYER IN THE WORLD....I AM NOT AGAINST HIM OR ANYTHING BUT I THINK TOO MUCH ATTENTION IS BEING PAID TO HIM NOT BEING SELECTED THEN THINKING ABOUT A GOOD TEAM THAT WOULD BE CHOSEN...FOR SOME REASON I HAVE A FEELING THIS WHOLE KARTHIK DEFENSE IS SOME SORT OF REGIONAL POLITICAL MESS....AND I AM SEEING A LOT OF COMMENTS ABOUT SOUTH IS BETTER AND HOW NORTH IS GOOD....ARE WE LOOKIGN FORWARD TO ANOTHER PARTITION...LIKE FOR GOD'S SAKE... WE HAVE A GREAT OPENING PAIR IN SAURAV AND ROBIN , followed by THE GREAT SACHIN, FOLLOWED BY RAHUL YUVRAJ, DHONI, AGARKAR, IRFAN, ZAHEER, ANIL (SAURAV/SACHIN COULD FILL IN FOR 5TH BOWLER, OR WE COULD OCCASIONALY DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF WICKET CHOSE AND EXTRA BOWLER IN PLACE OF YUVRAJ, NAMELY .....constructive comments only please and stop demoralizing the team all the time...GOD CRICKET IS SUPPOSED TO BE A GENTLEMEN'S GAME AND WHEN YOU READ THESE COMMENTS IT FEELS LIKE ITS A DIRTY JOKE....FORGET THE SELECTORS,...THEY SCREW UP A LOT OF TIMES AND EVEN IF THEY DONT WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE COMPLAINTS AGAINST THEM...BUT I TRUELY BELEIVE THAT IF WE HAVE THE ABOVE MENTIONED TEAM...WE HAVE A GOOD CHANCE AT THE WORLD CUP...I KNOW WE DIDNT WIN THE LAST ONE BUT BE PROUD THAT WE MADE IT TO THE FINALS AND LOST ONLY AGAINST THE WORLD'S BEST TEAM EVER

RE:WHY ARE YOU GUYS DEFENDING HIM SO MUCH

if u say that it is regional politics in game of
cricket, I would even say that it began during
the days of wadekar and bedi where India lost to
a lowest score during the captaincy of wadekar
the very next match venkatraghavan was included
and the match was succeeded. So from the beginning south was totally kept aside even after having somany players wo have never been
given a chance to play. It is not the question
of region. It is the question of game, if a
player shows his ability in all aspect why not
make use of him. So dont take it in the sense
of regional support. Even today sachin has not
made a firefull comeback, but do we find any
compromise in living sachin. So still there are
somany players who perform well irrespective of
region. It is for the board to find and include
them without seeing for region. Nobody in their
comments passed about any regional affect. Moreover i could not understand how u could say
that agarkar can be a good opener. Though agarkar has not done much in SA series, he is
been given more and more chance who is not to be
included in the team at all. So take it in the
way of game and performance. Everybody is happy
with the game of karthik including gavaskar, who
said IT IS NOT A BIG THING IN SCORING 6s AND 4s
AND RUN TO PAVILION SHORTLY. IT IS NOT EASY TO
DEFEND THE GAME AND KEEP ON SCORE BOARD MOVING
CONSISTENTLY.(THIS IS FOR KARTHIK HE SAID DURING
SA SERIES WHEN COMPARING WITH DHONI).

Forget about what our individual preferences are. I am trying to think based on
Dravid's responses/thinking and the obvious things we know so far.

Batsmen
-------
1. Uthappa
2. Ganguly
3. Dravid
4. Sachin
5. Yuvraj

Keeper/batsmen
--------------
1. Dhoni
2. Dinesh Karthik -- Showed compact technique and cool head under pressure and a team man AND Dravid likes him
for all those things. Plus, for a tour so long and so many matches before the knockout stage,
a second wk (a good one and a handy batsman) absolutely makes sense. He is in the final 15 even though
he may only make it to 11 if Dhoni is injured or repeatedly gets low scores. Otherwise he may enter as an
energetic sub fielder (as will Raina if he makes it to the 15).
If he is left out of 15 I will stop writing comments abt cricket.
Dravid is going to say -- "go to hell Mr. Wadekar". Mr. Wadekar would want "pure" batsmen like Jaffer for example.

Bowlers -- Dravid has clearly said 2 spinners. So, these 4 are automatic choices.
-------
1. Zaheer
2. Agarkar
3. Harbajan
4. Kumble

Now, 4 spots are left in the 15. Here are the contenders.
1. Veeru
2. Raina
3. Pathan
4. Powar
5. Sreesanth
6. Munaf
7. Kaif?

Now, it is tough to see Sehwag missing out. The first 2 SL games are going to determine that. If he makes
1 decent score (showing decent touch) he is in. 2 flops and he is out.

Pathan if he performs well 2 out of 2 (mainly with the ball), he is in, if not he is out.

Raina will miss if both of these guys make it in. Otherwise he is in. There is no test for him, his place is
not in his control. They already know his worth fully and that is in the field.

I want Powar to be in. He is a much better spinner and towards the end of the tournament, the beaten up pitches
in WI are going to support spin, and this guy will be a more lethal bowler than both Kumle and Bhajji.
And spin is the way we are going to beat the arrogant Aussies (and yes, we are beating them).
But, Dravid is not going to pay attention to people like me.

Sreesanth and Munaf, direct battle between each other. I think both will play ODI 1 and 2 vs SL and the
answer will become obvious. I don't see both of them making it.
Munaf has to show he can bowl full 10 overs with absolutely no discomfort in his ankle.
Srresanth has to show he can bowl with some of the zip he showed in SA even on flat pitches. Plus control runs.
It is a possibility if Pathan falls flat on his face with the ball.

Kaif - Is he even going to be tried against SL. Unlikely - that will disturb the settled batting order way too much.
This is one guy who has got lots of opportunities and didn't use them.

My prediction: (Pure guess)
Veeru, Pathan, Sreesanth and Munaf make it to the 15.

PS: It is not very comforting to know that we have Chappell as a coach when we may be facing Aus.
I seriously doubt he will say "come on boys, lets go kick some serious butt" when we are ready to face the Aussies,
league or knockout.

btw, stop that nonsense north/south fight. Looks too silly. Haven't you guys crossed 7th std?

Batsmen

we dont need karthik and thats absolutely correct. 2 spinners good enough and 4 pacers cool as well. Opening saurav and robin is good (sehwag could be optional incase of emeergency)followed by sachin, rahul, yuvraj & dhoni(we can play either anil or harbhajan )

The Mongias, Sehwags, Kaifs, Pathans have been given enough chances to showcase their skills!!!!! Its high time that they were all buried and forgotten. All these guys are after are MONEY!!!!They are run machines "only" at home. Karthik deserves a chance with all the energy and commitment he has shown over the past few months. Its guys like Karthik, who are the future of Indian cricket. Let us now give the Karthiks, Uthappas, Badrinaths and Raos a few opportunies too.

Right ho! Raj! You are on the money. First off, since when did Ajit Wadekar become a F$#@%^ oracle? How many WCs did we win when he was the manager? How the hell can ANYONE discount KD Karthik's place after what the way he played in SA and against the WI? On pure batting merit ON DISPLAY in recent times, Pathan and Karthik are the only guys who are a shoo in! What more should Karthik do? It is akin to sangakkara getting dropped from the SL team on current form - utterly ridiculous that there is even a discussion about Karthik!

No need for Wadekar to open his trap

Kaarthick is, currently, a better ODI batsman than Raina, Kaif or even his beloved Mumbai batsman - Jaffer. So, if Wadekar cannot think objectively, he should bask in the glory of his 70's era and not comment on current cricket affairs.

There is no sense in what Wadekar is saying. We already have 3 openers, Sourav, Sachin and Uthappa. Why do we need Veeru in the openers slot? We dont need 2 wecketkeepers for sure. But there is nothing wrong in using Dinesh Karthik as a Batsman. BUT NOR MORE VEERU CRAP.

boss sehwag didn't play well in WIndies
by Rajesh on Feb 02, 2007 10:07 PM

Boss you are biased. To me, Sehwag should be ommitted as he is now a weaker batman in International Cricket. Dinesh Kaarthick has better mindset than the slogging Dhoni. You should understand that a player should play his game based on the situation not trying to hit sixers every ball someone faces.

Wadekar is too narrow minded
by ram on Feb 02, 2007 09:18 PM  | Hide replies

I think Wadekar lacks a good perspective. yes, he got India's first test series win. But that was way back...
He has picked a squad which is destined to lose. Pathan, Sehwag are in woeful form. Why not give a chance to others who do well domestically.. Harbhajan has no variety when compared to Powar who atleast tries...
kathik can be described as one who plays with committment . Similar to collingwood. Both r not class batsmen but both r dedicated and realize the responsibility of playing for the country...

And Wadekar will not like karthik as he is from south zone.. Aint i right....

Absolutely right Ram!!!! Just coz he is from the south zone he is been targetted by the northies and northie supporters.

Mark my words!!! Finally we will end up with a team full of tried and tested oldies!! Watch. Sehwag will return , so will Munaf, Pathan, etc etc.

The whole system is corrupt. I wonder what "Venkatapathy Raju" is doing there. Where is Venugopal Rao. He is such a talented batsman. They destroyed his career too.

Now they are targetting Sreesanth. So what if he was expensive in a couple of one days. how many matches has Agarkar lost for us due to his erratic bowling???????????? what would wadekar say to this? would Wadekar want Agarkar too out of the team. Agarkar is the most overrated performer according to me. He is like any other school fast bowler. he is one of the most casual cricketers I have ever seen. He has no fire in him. He has earned enough I guess.

I dont think u have been following cricket scores lately, true agarkar had his weakness;but for thew past 6 months he has been very successful;he did well in west indies tour where the world cup will take place and he is been excellent in the home series as well... Just cuz u r biased against someone and dont like them doesnt mean you say things that r not true about them....seriously if anything you should comment in things you really know for sure and if you have a reasoning logic behind them...i am sure u were also one of those people who were criticizing sachin after a couple of months of weak form...You can only bet on the horse that is fit...and currently sachin, saurav, ajit and dravid are in form and world cup is taking place very soon...so we need players in form

Resistance against invaders? Have you heard of Madras Presidency? It was british administered. Pondicherry was french administered. Hyderabad (qutubshah)/Bijapur (adilshah) decimated the Vijanagara empire. Kerala was ruled by the Portuguese for a fair amount of time, and they allegedly even had inqisitions there. So, no, I dont buy your argument that southies resisted invaders any better than other Indians. By that argument, the people of the North East were never subjugated by any islamic invader. Only the mighty british empire managed to control them. The Europeans laid their foundations in South India. Only the islamic invaders came from the north and south india was insulated from it for a while. Vijaynagara did hold out to the Mughal empire for a while, but was eventually overrun by the aforementioned, plus Aurangzeb later on. (The argument can be made that the Maratha Empire at one point was so large that it controlled the Mughal Delhi Sultanate. They were, in fact, the last major Indian power to rule). I am a southie myself, and dislike Northie holier than thou attitude towards language etc, but you, my friend are twisting facts. The fact is that we failed to unite against invaders because we were too held up in petty politics. Comments such as yours and those of northies ridiculing south indians dont help at all.
As an aside, nobody (NOBODY) can question the commitment of two kars, Tendulkar and Gavaskar. Gavaskar faced up to the fiercest bowling attack ever and earned the respect of their captain, Viv Richards. They even wrote a calypso song about him. Tendulkar too has earned all the so called hype. Also, it might be pertinent to note that Rahul Dravid is in fact maharashtrian :-). Yup... From a geographic point of view, Maharashtra is also south India... I dont know if south indians or maharashtrians or both will agree to that label though...
