india was down12 for three at that crucial phase one has to play sensible and it was dravid's as a captain to anchor the batting line

Excellent statement. You saw what happened at the world cup and is it important that we should compare slowness or should we be comparing positives. Cricket is thriving becuase of people like Mallikarjuna.

well, if you could explain what was so negative about sachin playing slowly in the first innings, or ganguly playing slowly in the world cup when wickets were tumbling on the other side.

Rahul Dravid scores 3 off 53 balls! Is he trying to win the game or save it???
Reading many mails in this forum I thought only Sourav plays for personal records...........

It was a negative tactic!
by Manoj Joseph on Aug 12, 2007 06:04 PM  | Hide replies

It was surely a negative tactic not to enforce the follow on as India was afraid that they could not bowl England out within 319 runs on a fourth and fifth day pitch... Also, India were afraid that they will not be able to make the required runs if England scored a lead of around 150 runs.. It's shame.. We should have been bold enough to ask them to bat again..
Anyway, let's hope that the tactics of the team will work as planned we could win this match to go up 2-0 to win the series...

Very very very negative. He is not proper captaincy material. India might win but surely not because of his decision.

can't blame dravid
by mvs raju on Aug 12, 2007 05:55 PM  | Hide replies

i seen some guys are pointing about the sydney test vs australia where we could have won if we enforce the fall on...realistically it wasnt just look that score card test no 1680 in cricinfo
where australia were given target of 430 in 95 overs they reached 360 for 6 on last day..,i still doubt india would have lost if they enforce australia on that occasion and chasing a 250 on last day by india..
and not to forget the kolkata test that cost australia the series...
and more importantly just recently in 2006 ashes series test at brisbane test no 1817 cricinfo
where australia made 602 in first innings while england made 157 that means australia lead by 445 in first innings still they did no enforce follow on australia scored another 200 hundred and declare and won the match
if a team like australia cant rely on ist innings lead of 440 that too home turf what about india that to in opponent backyard,
so i dont blame dravid at all when you look these stats...
still we have a good chance of a 2-0 series win

Dravid is a fool. We have lost more matches because of his captaincy than won.

Its a very good decision
by HariBasker on Aug 12, 2007 05:52 PM  | Hide replies

Guys, its a very good decision, considering India's poor fourth innings total. And as the pitch starts wearing, it will be very difficult to bat on the fifth day. Please assume if England scores 300 today in there 2nd Innings, if they set a target of 150 for India tomorrow, India will not only lose this match, and more importantly they will fail to win this series. In the current situation if India can score another 100 runs, with a lead of 450 runs, I am sure we will win this match also, to go to 2-0.

It was a pretty easy decision to make. If it was middle of the day, your bowlers tired, weather conditions not good for bolwing and you have a lead less than 250, don't enforce follow on. But here, it was beginning of day, fresh bowlers, excellent bowling conditions (breeze and all that), you have a lead of 320 and there is a chance that it is going to rain. This is possibly the worst decision taken by Dravid. Now they can not do better than what they could have done that is giving innings defeat to England. They may still win the match huffing and puffing, something not at all required.

Sachin again fails to deliver
by on Aug 12, 2007 05:49 PM  | Hide replies

Again Tendulkar fails to deliver in an innings of a final ODI or Test match.

Tendulkar has never ever carried India to a victory, while still batting at the crease.

All that was required was a contribution of his average of 50 .

I would rather have seen him score 1 in the first innings and score 80 runs in the second.

Sachin your chances of ever carrying India to a victory are reducing day by day.

Why did Dravid not enforce the follow on ?
15th Aug is INDEPENDENCE DAY. Why are Indians still behaving like slaves to the British ???

Ganguly was the captain when India toured Australia when in the third test, despite enough lead, India did not enforec the follow on and eventually, India could not get enough time to bowl them out to secure a historic series win in Austrialia..
