Barry is spot on in his assessment. BCCI, Indian pitches and the money coming into the game from India have combined to make cricket a mismatch as far as a contest between bowlers and batsmen is concerned. It may be unfair to compare Sachin and Srinath but it is true that many flash-in-the pan batsmen like Sehwag are idolized more than an honest performer like Kumble or Srinath. It is bowlers who win matches and killing the art of bowling will harm both world cricket and Indian cricket. Not to mention that it enables even mediocre batsmen to become greats.

Cricket and Cricketers in India are different to rest of the world!!
by Raj on Oct 13, 2006 01:25 PM

I completely agree with what Berry Richards said!! I know many of my friends in this forum won't agree but thats what is true!
BCCI has become a complete commercial organisation and so are cricketers in India. So much of politics and so much of money is not good for the game of crickets. My god, the way people are crazy about this bunch of players in Team India, as if they are aliens and not like any other common man!! I have no clue whatsoever why we Indians treat cricketers as gods and cricket as religion?? Team India has not won a single MAJOR tournament since a decade, mind you a single 'major' tournament. And I am also sure its in India that people also curse these cricketers most when they dont perform.
I have seen only Gilchrist in an Aussie TV ad (milo) and no one else!! Can you believe this is true for the team of world champions! Whereas in India, cricketers sell everything on TV.

I sincerely hope that some other country takes over from BCCI and cricket in India may be treated like any other sport including athletics. This is what happens here in Australia and thats the reason why Australians are ahead in so many sports. Cheers.

At last ! Some of the truth!
by TNC on Oct 13, 2006 09:12 AM

It is really surprising to see Rediff publishing this article! At last some truth has come out.
Remove half the sponsorship money - will see the performance / dedication of the top players tumble.
Just for info - not sure how many will believe this - one of the reasons Ganguly was removed - as his sponsorship earnings was about to cross the 1-2 Indian top players.
Its true - BCCI runs major share of world cricket and those 1-2 top players control BCCI.

Aussie complaining about commercialization
by Raj on Oct 13, 2006 07:53 AM

Dear Sir,
I'm surprised that an Aussie is complaining about commercialization in cricket given the Packer series and all. I agree that BCCI should start looking at player welfare also rather than just profit. Maybe they should have 2 teams. Summer team and winter team.

To say BCCI should try to make less money is just irrational.

Raj
