This seems to be a good move by the Australian selector. If you look into the position of Watson in a test team, he is preferred as a fifth bowler and in a test match a fifth bower is always under bowled. That's why his role as a bowler is minimised.
In the batting point of view, though Warson has done reasonably good in the recent ODIs played by the Aussies but in the same time Clerk has not done anything bad either. The Ausssies need a good solid batter at no six and Clarke might be the well placed here because he has more coverage of shots than Watson and a good fielder as well.
But it seems the Australian think tank has different plans
