DearSirs: Although it is a great act on part of H.H.Sharad Pawar to grant medical expenses to late Shri Umrigar; It seems in the first hand like the latr Shri Captain is shown a mercy which any body will agree that a sportsman like him would never opt for & hence should have been mentioned in some different context, rather than mixing with he sorrow news covering his life story in brief, U.M.Choughule. A great cricketer who steered India to the international recognition, this is a moment of sorrow for all cricket lovers in India. His contribution to the game, particularly against the fierce fast ball attack of Larwood,Gilchrist,Statham and their contemporary, would remain as an example for the brooding cricketers of today.I don't know if BCCI has kept some films of his batting techniques, which could be a learning to many of our cricketers of today.I pay my deepest respect to the departed soul.
Polly Umrigar belonged to that era when cricket was still a "gentlemen's game". An great all rounder, one of the finests batsmen and a noble soul. His style of batting was a delight to watch.
He had brought honour to the nation. In his death, we have lost a national hero of yester years.
It is extremely unfortunate that India has lost it's best captain of it's times(1940-1960)....a great personality by all term's.....sorry sir.may your soul rest in peace.
Polly Umrigar was a great gentleman cricketer who received respect from nations where cricket is played. He was a legend. Maharajkumar of Vizianagaram (Vizzi) fondly called Umrigar the Palm Tree. In 1961-62 England toured India under Ted Dexter. Vizzi in his characteristic absent-minded commentary, continued to say Trueman to Barrington via Palm Tree. No run...... Polly played many great innings, including 172 against mighty West Indian attack. However, to our utter shock he succumbed to his last innings. May his soul,a great one,in deed, rest in peace !!! K. Polly Umrigar was one of the first cricketers about whom I came to know through newspapers like The Statesman in the late 1950s when I was a child of less than 10. I started listening to the commentaries on the Philips radio at home a year or two later, by inimitable commentators with their signature voices and styles. The indelible impress of this stylish batsman-gentleman will remain fresh in the minds of cricketers and lovers of cricket in this country till the end. Heartfelt condolences to the family. Polly remains in the memory of millions today, and will remain so tomorrow.
In the passing away the country of one of the greatest cricketer in India. At a time(during 60s) when India could not take first innings lead over West Indies, Poly Umrigar,Vinoo Mankad,Manjrekar and others could face the fury of west Indian bowling of Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith. During the cricketing days of Umrigar not many test matches were played as such he had limited chance of scoring runs. His was a unique style of batting. Always cheerful both on and off the field, Umrigar was a great personality. His was a role model for present day cricketers. Umrigarji, you will be long remembered. May his soul rest in peace.
