England played magnificent cricket in their 1st innings. They also started well in the 1st part of SL 1ST innings and extremely bowled well.Hoggard and their debutant bowler S.Mahmood bowled superbly andthe latter had a dream spell of taking 3 wickets for 8 runs and had SL tottering in the mid eighties for the loss of six wickets. England lost their focus at that stage and started playing club cricket and having lots of fun overconfident of victory.Their was a stage when the debutant after taking his third wicket and bowling brilliantly the fielding team were joking and having fun as to how the ball missed the batsmans nose such as a social event and loosing focus and creating the resolve for the SL GREAT ESCAPE.
